Gay Rights Pioneer Aristide Laurent Dies

Sad news, Aristide ‘A.J.’ Laurent, a pioneer of our gay rights movement & a founder of The Advocate newspaper died at his home in Los Angeles after a long illness he was 70. Laurent helped start The Los Angeles Advocate in 1967, working alongside Richard Mitch (Dick Michaels), Bill Rau & Sam Allen, who had taken over the Pride newsletter & renamed it. Laurent, then working at ABC Television with Rau & Allen, helped produce early issues of The Advocate in the studio’s basement print shop & wrote a nightlife column (“Mariposas de la Noche”) under the name “P. Nutz.” Those were the days that everyone on the paper used pseudonyms, he noted. “It was dangerous to be a ‘pervert’ prior to the liberation movement. You didn’t use your real name for fear of reprisals, not only harassment by the LAPD but the ever-present possibility of losing your day job, family and friends,” he wrote in 2007 marking the publication’s 40th anniversary. Services will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Magnolia Springs, Ala., Nov. 5th Memorial contributions may be sent to:

Gay Military Declares War on DOMA

A little over a month since the certification of the repeal of DADT (Don't Ask, Don't Tell) the gay org Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) has filed federal litigation against U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta & Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki on behalf of current & former service members. They are seeking equal recognition, benefits & family support for their equal sacrifice in the U.S. Armed Forces. The plaintiffs are legally married & want the armed services to recognize their families. They just want the same family support & benefits for their spouses that the services & Department of Veterans Affairs provide for heterosexual spouses. The case filed in Massachusetts challenges the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), as well as provisions in Title 10, Title 32, & Title 38 of U.S. Code, which prevents the military from providing gay married couples with the same benefits & family support as their straight, married peers. Updates to Come...:)

Dallas has a huge LGBT population & is becoming a very hot gay destination as seen on the new show “A List Dallas” on Logo TV & on Bravo in the reality show “Most Eligible Dallas” that featured a cute gay guy, Drew. Chaz Proudly Exits Dancing With The Stars

The last few weeks has been a bit of a disappointment watching 2 LGBT heroes being voted off Dancing With The Stars. Both Chaz Bono & Carson Kressley did a fab job for our community participating in this American TV spectacle. We are very proud of their efforts. The only comment I have with Carson being a stylist is, I wish his choice of costumes has been less goofy. Like Margaret Cho’s appearance in rainbow pride gear last year it seems that the audience perception of our LGBT community should be more glamorous & less camp. Let the straight contestants be the flamboyant ones. You know they’re dieing too. Now back to Chaz’s last dance so to speak….The idea of wearing the Phantom of the Opera costume should have been left in the closet. After the dance he was sweating so much he lost his cool. Americans do not like to see anyone sweat on TV. This dates back to the Kennedy/Nixon TV debates that lost Nixon the presidency. Then it was a good thing. This was a pity. We would have liked to see him dance on.

Report Confirms Bias Against Gay Families

Every few weeks there’s a new report addressing gay marriage or LGBT inequities in America. The latest has appeared on the AP discussing what gay parents have to deal with in states that do not recognize their relationship & how this may effect their children. The report states that hat possibly 1.2 million kids are being raised by gay & lesbian parents without any federal rights & protections for their families. "There are myriad ways that our LGBT families are discounted by government at all levels & children are hurt the most," states Jennifer Chrisler of the Family Equality Council, 1 of the 3 groups authoring the report. These are the facts Washington should be dealing with to repeal DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act), pass the Respect of Marriage Act & protect our LGBT families. Updates to Come…:)

Wear Purple For Spirit Day October 20th

Today October 20th join the movement with millions of dedicated Americans & wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender (LGBT) youth to speak out against bullying. LGBTQ teens are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Numerous teens continue to take their own lives after facing bullying incidents. Just last weekend a gay 15-year-old boy in Ottawa, Canada, killed himself after suffering years of depression & bullying. Brittany McMillan, a teen herself started Spirit Day last year in response to the young people who have killed themselves. Observed annually on October 20th, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals & celebs wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. This year, MTV will turn their logo purple in support of Spirit Day. This is only the second time in the network’s 30 year history they are changing the logo for a cause. Celebs including Ricky Martin, Julianne Moore, Jersey Shore cast members, Chaz Bono & many more will be wearing purple. Hosts of ABC's Good Morning America, CNBC, E!, Wendy Williams & Conan O’Brien will also go purple, among others. To participate "go purple" today October 20th as we work to create a world in which our LGBT teens are celebrated & accepted for who they are. Updates to Come...:)

The Advocate Reinvents Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert definitely was American Idol’s most interesting graduate, has a new album in the works, a new relationship & a new media attitude. Before American Idol Lambert’s life was not defined by his sexuality. According to him, “all of a sudden it’s all about being gay.” He acknowledges that some good can come from that, “When I was a kid I didn’t have that many people to look up to. And if I’d had people in the public eye who were really up-front about it, it probably would have helped me. I feel like this is a conversation Advocate readers will understand where I’m coming from, because it’s tricky–I don’t know what the f--- I’m doing sometimes. Seriously. No one teaches you how to be a gay celebrity.”
