Gay Man Faces Navy Discharge

We did it!! Robin McGehee of GetEqual just got off the phone
with Petty Officer Derek Morado, the servicemember who

was facing discharge today in California despite "Don't Ask,

Don't Tell" having been repealed 100 days ago. By a vote of

3-0, Derek was recommended for retention. Derek gets to not

only save his career, but walk prouder without the burden of

discrimination on his shoulders. This is Great News….:)

In December when President Obama signed the "Don't
Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010," we thought this was
the game-changer. Of course we were a bit skeptical about
Obama dragging his feet about the transition to make the
repeal fully inclusive & get it implemented. Especially
when the Obama administration refused to drop their
appeal against the Log Cabin Republicans after their case
found DADT unconstitutional in Federal court.
Today Derek Morado, Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class who was
outed by a fellow sailor in 2009, still faces discharge from
the Navy. The 26-year-old sailor will appear at a hearing on
the base today before a three-member panel that will rule
whether he should be discharged for homosexual conduct.
The hearing is not open to the public. Morado said he's heard
that no one has been discharged from the military for being
gay since October. He hopes not to be the first since then,
because he wants to make the Navy his career. "It's all I really
know," he said. "I've done it since high school. I just want to
keep doing it." Updates to Come…:)

Reps Frank & Baldwin ENDA UPDATE

Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) on Re- Introduction in
Congress of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)
“It is extremely important for Congress to recognize & address
discrimination that exists in employment against people on the
basis of their sexual orientation & gender identity. It is up to
Congress to assert that such discrimination is illegal & un-American.
I am proud to join Congressman Frank & our colleagues in
introducing this inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act &
look forward to working with them this Congress to advance the
legislation,” Baldwin said.
Wednesday Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) the longest-serving
out member of Congress, re- introduced the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) in the House. However,
the bill is not expected to move forward in the House under
the leadership of Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).
Congressman Frank said, "It's an organizing tool. Obviously,
with the Republicans in power, you're not going to get the bill
even considered." Frank believes that ENDA will pass before
DOMA is repealed congressionally stating, "I believe that, with
regard to DOMA, the goal is to win it in court. I do not think
there is a good likelihood of getting DOMA repealed through
the Congress. I think there is a good likelihood, in a Democratic
Congress, of getting an inclusive ENDA.” Updates to Come…:)

Uganda "Kill The Gays bill" Dies

New Exclusive Audio Interview with Ricky Martin

@ OUTTAKE VOICES™

Finally OUT of Africa: David Bahati, the minister of parliament
behind Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill, suffered a big defeat.
The so-called Kill The Gays bill, which seeks imprisonment for
practicing LGBT & execute repeat offenders, on the order of
President Yoweri Museveni, the Legal & Parliamentary Affairs
Committee has opted not to put the bill up for lawmakers which
ends a 2 year attempted to further criminalize "aggravated
homosexuality." Museveni, supposedly terminated the toxic
bill. This does not, of course, mean gays in Uganda are safe:
sodomy remains illegal there & it's possible Bahati or another
homophobe could take up a similar bill in the future.
Just because 85 countries signed the United Nations resolution
promising to support efforts to keeps LGBTs safe that Uganda's
LGBT will find themselves in the safety net of the international
community. Remember America's religious zealots, immune to
state pressure, helped create the Kill The Gays bill to start with.
Listen to this exclusive audio byte with Rev. John Makokha of
Kenya who talks about American fundamentalists Christian
Evangelists leaders importing homophobia to Africa.

WAM! Film Festival 2011 @ MIT Today

Women, Action & the Media (WAM!) Film Festival 2011,
takes place today, March 26 at MIT Stata Center, from

feature films directed or produced by women (many
of them local), that also focus on women’s issues. The

of power. Women working in the industry will share their
stories and reflect on what has changed over the years,
what has stayed the same & how to keep change coming.
The Panel is Moderated by Charlotte Robinson, Emmy
Winner & CEO of OUTTAKE MEDIA & Featuring:

Sara Archambault, LEF Foundation

Susan Bryant, Sound Recordist

Cynthia Close, Documentary Education Resources

Target Sues Gay Activists

Target is back in the news trying to ban gay activist groups
from talking to their customers entering & leaving their
San Diego, California stores. LGBT org "Canvass For A
Cause" is being sued by Target for chatting up customers
outside their stores about gay marriage & the controversy
over the $150,000 donation Target made supporting an
anti-gay unsuccessful Minnesota Republican gubernatorial
candidate. This morning, Superior Court Judge Jeffrey
Barton will listen to arguments from both sides.
“The fundamental American right to free speech is at the
heart of this case”, said Tres Watson, Executive Director
of CFAC who is a San Diego resident. CFAC volunteers
also note that other groups are also talking to customers
outside Target, including veterans orgs & Girl Scouts.
Looks like Lady Gaga was so right in not being involved
with Target pulling out of her deal with them for her
new CD "Born This Way". Updates to Come...:)

Elizabeth Taylor died at age 79. She reportedly
died of congestive heart failure. She was the first &
most effective celebrity AIDS Activist & Gay Ally in
America. We will miss her.....
"She was surrounded by her children- Michael Wilding,
Christopher Wilding, Liza Todd, and Maria Burton,"
stated Taylor's publicist, Sally Morrison. Michael Wilding,
Taylor's son, released the following statement about his
mother's passing: "We will always be inspired by her
enduring contribution to our world."
Liz was one of the last great Hollywood movie stars. She won
3 academy awards. Twice for best actress for Who's Afraid of
Virginia Woolf? & Butterfield 8 & was also awarded the
Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1993 for her AIDS work.
"Why shouldn't gay people be able to live as open & freely as
everybody else? What it comes down to, ultimately, is love.
How can anything bad come out of love? The bad stuff comes
out of mistrust, misunderstanding and, God knows,
from hate and from ignorance." stated by Liz Taylor....
