All investors are faced with the complex challenges when it comes to retirement, including: how to save enough to feel comfortable, where to invest retirement savings, understanding & creating retirement income options & when & where to retire. LGBT investors face these same challenges as well as several unique ones, including those stemming from a lack of federal marriage & inheritance rights. In a recent nationwide Wells Fargo retirement survey, LGBT non-retirees reported a higher level of confidence in their retirement savings, compared to the general population. In the survey, 61% of LGBT non-retirees felt confident they would have enough saved by the time they retire to live the lifestyle they want throughout their retirement, significantly higher than 53% cited by the general population. Despite this confidence, over a third (36%) of LGBT non-retirees expect they will need to work during retirement in order to afford their lifestyle only slightly lower than the 41% of the general population. Of course more than half (54%) of all LGBT respondents cite being recognized as equal citizens by society & the law as the most important reason for legalizing gay marriage. One in five (19%) say that having legal rights & medical decision-making on behalf of one’s partner is most important. Only 7% said legalizing gay marriage was not important to them. He will arrive in Jacksonville, Florida on June 9th to a hero’s welcome for completing a historic “Civil Rights Walk Across America” carrying the Rainbow Flag & a bill seeking full federal equality for LGBT Americans – The American Equality Bill. Eleven Mayors & 3 City Councils from a diverse array of cities, including Salt Lake City, Birmingham, Biloxi, Baton Rouge, Mobile, Austin, Houston, Oakland, Boulder, West Hollywood, Tallahassee & New Orleans issued official Proclamations in support of the Walk & demand that Congress add “sexual orientation & gender identity” to the 1964 Civil Rights Act & related laws, as a matter of urgent public health & welfare. At the finish line in Jacksonville, where the City Council will soon vote on a local civil rights ordinance, the Rainbow House GLBT Community Center & River City News Magazine will host a welcoming event starting at 1P at the Rainbow House, 2857 Myra Street. “I was overwhelmed by the rash of suicides & so I walked,” said Richard Noble, who put his life in storage & started out from San Francisco last March, 2011. “I carried the Rainbow Flag through the desert & across the Rockies, to Matthew Shepard’s fence & Wounded Knee, to gay groups & elected officials, all to help light a fire for full equality & to talk about the insidious psychological and physical harm LGBT Americans suffer from discrimination.” Updates to Come...:)

New Exclusive Audio Interview with Orlando Del Valle who serves on the Board of Directors of The History Project. The couple met at an education rally in 2002 & tied the knot 3 years after getting engaged at the Love, Peace & Marriage Equality rally in NYC. "On May 27, 2012, Cynthia Nixon & her girlfriend, Christine Marinoni, were legally married in the state of New York" Nixon's rep confirmed. "Nixon wore a custom dress by Carolina Herrera." As you remember in January this year, Nixon angered our LGBT community with her controversial "gay by choice" remarks. She quickly clarified her statement by saying, "While I don't often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual. I believe bisexuality is not a choice, it is a fact. What I have 'chosen' is to be in a gay relationship." Talking about her sexual orientation, meanwhile, she once said, "In terms of sexual orientation, I don't feel I've changed. I'd been with men all my life & I'd never fallen in love with a woman. But when I did, it didn't seem strange. I'm just a woman in love with another woman." The couple have a son together named Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni who Christine gave birth to in February 2011. The actress has 2 children, daughter Samantha & son Charles Ezekiel, from a previous relationship with Danny Mozes. SLDN (Servicemembers Legal Defense Network) & Freedom To Marry have launched a grassroots petition calling on Congress to end marriage discrimination against gay & lesbian service members & veterans. The petition builds support for repealing the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) & passing the Respect for Marriage Act. It is part of the new Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry national campaign highlighting the stories of military families harmed by DOMA. "This Memorial Day, we remember those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom, but we must also recognize that our gay & lesbian service members & their families pay a price every day even as they serve our country – a price their straight counterparts are not required to pay. It’s time to repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act & honor these brave patriots by treating them equally," said Army Veteran & SLDN Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis. Read Full Petition….
Have a Safe & Fabulous Memorial Day Weekend!!

Exclusive Audio Chat with Dr. Samuel Pang the Medical Director of the Reproductive Science Center of New England. Aubrey Sarvis , Army veteran & Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) Executive Director, stated, "SLDN & our allies have been working on Capitol Hill this year to encourage the Senate Armed Services Committee to pass a common-sense defense spending bill that does not seek to turn the clock back on the progress we have made in this first year of implementation of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' repeal. We now turn our attention to making sure the full Senate passes the committee bill & that the harmful language included in the House version is stripped away in conference committee.” The House bill that passed on May 18th included 2 harmful amendments put forth by homophobic opponents of LGBT military equality. The first would give so-called "conscience protections" to chaplains & service members who do not wish to minister & work with gay & lesbian service members. A threat to military readiness & unit cohesion, this amendment would allow service members to actively harass their fellow comrades for their perceived or actual sexual orientation. It would allow chaplains to discriminate against service members by religion, gender, sexual orientation, race, or any other religious belief simply by arguing that ministering to them would be contrary to their "conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs." This is an excellent way to kick off Memorial Day Holiday Weekend for our gay & lesbian military serving our country. Since they were exposed for donating a sizable amount of money to an anti-gay politician in Minnesota, the big box company has been attempting to win back a gay-friendly reputation. Remember Lady Gaga locked heads with them over a marketing deal for her BORN THIS WAY CD release due to their homophobic position. Lady Gaga stated last year, "Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups & begin to reform & make amends for the mistakes they've made in the past ... our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community & to redeem the mistakes they've made supporting those [anti-gay] groups." The new Target line of tees is being offered just in time to profit on our pride celebrations. The sales of the $12.99 shirts will go to the Family Equality Council but donations are capped at $120,000 which is $30,000 less than what Target donated toward homophobe GOP Tom Emmer’s gubernatorial campaign in 2010. The other interesting fact is the tee shirts are only available online. So don’t expect any displays in Target stores supporting LGBT equality anytime soon. The tees feature lame designs inspired by Japanese dolls, some 70s-style typography & even singer Gwen Stefani helped design 2 of them. You'd think they'd have the gay fashion sense to have perhaps Isaac Mizrahi designer the tees. Take a look at our pride tees that at least say something. Adding to that African-Americans have finally moved more in favor of marriage equality hopefully taking their lead from Obama on this issue. The margin is 53 % of Americans say gay marriage should be legal. The interesting part is our visibility. In America 71 % now say they have a friend, family member or acquaintance who’s gay, up from 59 % in 1998. People who know someone who’s gay are 20 points more likely than others to support gay marriage. We need the African-American support which is up to 59 % in this survey that support gay marriage. That’s up from 41 % last year & 65 % support Obama’s new position on the issue. As we reported the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced its support for gay marriage last weekend. Now the homophobic stats of course come from Republicans & conservatives that oppose gay marriage by more than 2-1 & evangelical white Protestants by more than 3-1. Democrats however continue to support marriage equality by more than 2-1. So it comes down to 58 % support legalizing gay marriage & 43 % do so strongly. Just stop using the Karl Rove term ‘same-sex’ & watch marriage equality become a reality. There will be a celebration at 5P PST at the corner of Harvey Milk Street (Blaine Ave.) & Centre Street. Speakers at the event will include: Nicole Murray Ramirez – City Commissioner, Todd Gloria - Council Member District 3, Anthony Young Council President District 4, Stuart Milk – Founder of the Harvey B. Milk Foundation, Dwayne Crenshaw - Executive Director - San Diego LGBT Pride & Delores Jacobs - Chief Executive Officer of The LGBT Community Center. A reception with refreshments will follow the prgram inside the LGBT Community Center. Dwayne Crenshaw, San Diego LGBT Pride Executive Director stated, “After the tireless efforts of a group of community leaders, LGBT civil rights leader Harvey Milk will be honored in the same way we honor leaders such as Cesar Chavez & Martin Luther King Jr. Harvey Milk dedicated his life to leading our community in the struggle for equal rights. The unveiling of Harvey Milk Street will mark a symbolic moment in our history & a step in the right direction towards achieving the truly American value of equality.” Harvey Milk would have been 82th today. In 1977 Milk became the first out gay elected official from a major U.S. city when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He won on a platform of civil rights but his tenure was cut short when he was assassinated by former supervisor, Dan White, the following year. In 2009 he was awarded the Medal of Freedom in by President Obama saying that Milk’s “message of hope, hope unashamed, hope unafraid, could not ever be silenced.” Harvey Milk was a champion for seniors, for working people & for those who didn't have a voice & his courageous work set the stage for many of the key civil rights advances we enjoy today. Saturday's vote cements the bond of our common struggle to insure that all Americans are treated equally. We thank our friends at the NAACP for their action today.” In their resolution the NAACP Board affirmed, “…the NAACP has opposed & will continue to oppose any national, state, local policy or legislative initiative that seeks to codify discrimination or hatred into the law or to remove the Constitutional rights of LGBT citizens.” The NAACP Board was unequivocal in the announcement released Saturday, with President & CEO Ben Jealous declaring, “Civil marriage is a civil right & a matter of civil law. The NAACP’s support for marriage equality is deeply rooted in the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution & equal protection of all people.”
So this is good news for our LGBT people & an interesting turn of events for Sunday’s bully pulpits. The admission for the BAGLY Prom is $20. Continuing the festivities on Sunday May 20th Boston GLASS, a program hosted by JRI, entitled “Bridging the Divide between LGBTQ youth & LGBTQ youth of color” will take place. This will be a forum with a panel of diverse youth community members & two youth moderators. The panel will address a number of issues with in the LGBTQ youth community such as “clicks,” homophobia within the gay community, transphobia, race, social status, white privilege, male privilege, programming for youth services & the stigma of HIV/AIDS. There will be allotted 30-45 minutes at the end of the panel to go over action items for the things discussed. A brunch featuring pancakes, bacon (turkey/pork), eggs, French toast, home fries & fruit will also be served. It will be great home cooked food, so come ready to eat & discuss the future of LGBTQ youth on Sunday at 12:30P at 25 West Street, Boston, MA.
Happy Massachusetts Youth LGBTQ Pride!! For More Info….

Exclusive Audio Chat with Director Jeffrey Schwarz about his new must-see documentary VITO about gay activist Vito Russo. The bill passed by a vote of 299-120. The first of these gives so-called "conscience protections" to chaplains & service members who do not wish to minister or work with gay & lesbian service members. This amendment would allow service members to actively harass their fellow comrades for their perceived or actual sexual orientation. It would allow chaplains to discriminate against service members by religion, gender, sexual orientation, race, or any other religious belief simply by arguing that ministering to them would be contrary to their "conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs." Another provision adopted in committee limits the use of Department of Defense property for same-gender marriage ceremonies. Next week, the Senate Armed Forces Committee begins mark-up on its own version of the NDAA. Differences between House & Senate versions will be addressed in conference committee later this year. Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis stated, "SLDN has been working all along with our allies in the Senate to ensure these or other harmful provisions are not included in the Senate version of the NDAA & do not survive when the bill gets to conference committee." In 2004 Massachusetts pioneered gay marriage in this country, which is now legal in Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa, New York, & Washington D.C. Thousands of gay couples have legally tied the knot in Massachusetts. We wish you the best & thank you for your courage to love. Though the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act has been found unconstitutional in the courts DOMA continues to deny our legally married gay couples 1,138 federal rights of marriage. This also affects all our gay & lesbian service members. Many people assume that with the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," gay & lesbian service members are finally being treated fairly & equally but they're not. DOMA forces the military to treat legally married gay & lesbian service members & their families differently from straight service members & denies these military families crucial support & protection provided to all other married couples. Now that President Obama has come out in support of marriage equality the tide has changed forever. Public opinion polls consistently show that Americans favor gay marriage. We urge Congress & all states with discriminatory laws on their books to stand for justice & equality for all people, as the Constitution requires & work together to uphold the American tradition of fairness & equality by ending marriage discrimination. Freedom to Marry & Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) have launched Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry, a new national campaign that will highlight the stories of gay & lesbian military families harmed by the obscene & discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act. The campaign launched with the release of an online video illustrating the real injury inflicted on gay & lesbian military families who because of the federal government’s refusal to respect their marriages legally, are denied the support & protections that all other military families receive. This is all because of the ‘gay exception’ created by DOMA, America’s legally married gay & lesbian couples are denied 1,100+ federal responsibilities & protections including Social Security survivors benefits, equal treatment under U.S. immigration laws & the opportunity to take leave to care for a spouse. The Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry campaign will include video & other multimedia content spotlighting the harms of DOMA on military families, including the denial of health insurance, survivor benefits & access to military bases & housing for service members’ spouses. Additionally, the campaign will invite the public to sign an online petition calling on Congress to “end this discriminatory & unequal treatment of our service members & veterans by repealing DOMA.” Watch Video.....

Exclusive Audio Chat with Director Jeffrey Schwarz about his new must-see documentary VITO about gay activist Vito Russo. The mural shows 2 men holding hands while looking at scales that weigh the gay rights enjoyed in Israel versus LGBT persecution in other Middle Eastern countries, including the Palestinian territories & Iran. The artwork is the question, "Who would you want at your wedding?" The mural will remain at 111 Leroy Street between Greenwich & Hudson Streets until defaced. Rebecca Sugar, Executive Director of The Alumni Community of Birthright Israel stated "I hope that everyone who believes in decency & freedom, including those in the gay community will look at this mural & know that Israeli society best reflects the values that we cherish here in New York. President Obama's endorsement Wednesday of gay marriage has brought the issue to the forefront of the American conversation, which is playing out across many states. But in the Middle East, only Israel enjoys the freedom to have that same debate. Members of the gay community need to understand that there is only one country in the Middle East where a free & safe life is available to them – Israel & we hope that significance is not lost." The mural shows on one scale facts about Israel's neighbors: "In Iran homosexuality is a crime punishable by death. There is no Pride Parade in Egypt, Jordan or Gaza. Homosexuality is illegal in Syria." On the other scale are facts about Israel where gay couples can legally adopt children, serve openly in the military & government & more than 10,000 people celebrated at Tel Aviv's Pride Parade in 2011. Check it OUT at 111 Leroy Street between Greenwich & Hudson Streets in NYC.

Exclusive Audio Chat with Director Jeffrey Schwarz about his new must-see documentary VITO about gay activist Vito Russo. Both magazines hit newsstands today. Why Newsweek is calling Obama the first gay president is a bit puzzling since he’s not gay but just standing on the right side of history on marriage equality. We also start the week with a new Gallup Poll that shows 54% of Americans consider homosexuality “morally acceptable,” with 50 % supporting legalizing gay marriage. It’s interesting timing since the poll also shows the gender gap with a solid majority of 56 % of women back marriage equality compared to only 42% of men. Of course the only region of the country where gay marriage doesn’t win majority support is the South. There’s 56 % support in the East, 53 % support in the Midwest & 55 % support in the West. The South comes in with 40 %. So this election year continues to be beyond interesting to see how this will play out. Rep. Barney Frank (D) of Massachusetts said on ABC's “This Week” on Sunday, "If you were going to cast your vote based on a candidate's position regarding same-gender marriage, you were already going to vote for Obama [or] Romney based on that. I literally don't think anybody's vote was changed by this one way or the other." Homophobic Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said, “Obama’s comments are deeply saddening. I pray for the President every day & will continue to pray that he & his Administration act justly to uphold & protect marriage as the union of one man & one woman.” What we need to do is pray for all the religious leaders who feel that they’re justified in the name of God to preach hate & fear of one minority of the population. Meanwhile Rev. Al Sharpton, joined by Civil Rights leaders Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery, President Emeritus of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Melanie Campbell, President & CEO of the National Coalition for Black Civic Engagement & Julian Bond, Chairman Emeritus of NAACP, have all joined to reaffirm their solid support of the president & to urge Black Americans not to be distracted from issues that directly impact our progression as a people. Rev. Sharpton stated, “This is not about mine or anyone’s personal or religious views. It is about equal rights for all. We cannot be selective with civil rights. We must support civil rights for everybody or we don’t support them for anyone. I am prepared to fight, as I have since 2003 in the faith community, about the rightness of the position that the President has now taken.” Updates to Come...:)
New Exclusive conclusion of our audio montages with 5 filmmakers about their films scheduled this week at the Boston LGBT Film Festival that runs through May 13th. It seems in Mitt’s high school days there was a guy with long bleached blond hair which Romney took a scissors to as his cronies held the poor guy down. The story went national in the wake of Obama coming out for marriage equality. Romney of course has amnesia about the incident with a footnote of being sorry if he had done the deed. Finally Romney’s true character is beginning to surface. If you’re a homophobe, hatemonger & bully then Romney is your man. This sort of attitude is what keeps this country from moving forward. Romney hasn’t changed from his high school years. Remember Romney's the one who ran for Senator in Massachusetts saying he was a better advocate for gay rights then Ted Kennedy. Then when gay marriage passed in 2004 Governor Romney enforced a 1913 bill preventing nonresidents from marrying that cost the Commonwealth of Massachusetts millions of dollars of lost revenues. Even the gay Republicans are beginning to see the true Romney pleading with him to change his position on marriage equality. R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director said, "Governor Mitt Romney's statement in opposition to not just marriage but civil unions jeopardizes his ability to win moderates, women & younger voters, especially as a large majority of Americans favor some form of relationship recognition for their LGBT friends & neighbors. This homophobic legislation would allow chaplains to discriminate against service members by religion, gender, sexual orientation, race, or any other religious belief simply by arguing that ministering to them would be contrary to their "conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs." This anti gay amendment was put forth by Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO). Army veteran & SLDN (Servicemembers Legal Defense Network) Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis fired back stating, "Mr. Akin is trying to solve a problem that does not exist. There are already in place adequate protections for chaplains & service members in this area. No one in uniform is being required to go against their conscience & no one is being punished for expressing their personal religious beliefs. The alleged cases of abuse or bad judgment that Mr. Akin likes to reference have not been investigated or proven to be factual. So, let's get to the heart of the matter. Mr. Akin & a few others wish to weaken implementation of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' repeal. The Pentagon, Congress & the American people have spoken on this & Mr. Akin simply doesn't like the outcome." A second amendment adopted on Wednesday, sponsored by Rep. Steve Palazzo (R-MS) and Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO), would limit the use of Department of Defense property for same-gender marriage ceremonies. So though we continue to move forward to full equality in America we must keep an eyeful watch on Congress. AFER lead co-counsel Theodore B. Olson stated, “Today is a proud day for all Americans. The bedrock American principles of freedom & human dignity are central to the political & legal convictions of Republicans, Democrats, liberals & conservatives alike. President Obama’s words remind us that marriage & equality are universal values that unite us all. They remind us that we are all—as a People & a Nation—striving to form a more perfect Union.” AFER Board President Chad Griffin added, “President Obama’s words today will be celebrated by generations to come. The millions of young gay & lesbian Americans across this nation, their President’s words provide genuine hope that they will be the first generation to grow up with the freedom to fully pursue the American dream. Marriage—the promise of love, companionship & family—is basic to the pursuit of that dream. Our Constitution’s promise, the promise of liberty, is one that every generation must realize. As President Obama recognized today, the fight to secure marriage equality is the defining element of our generation’s search for greater freedom.” This is a great day for our LGBT people. North Carolina has adopted Amendment One, a state constitutional amendment that prohibits marriage equality & any form of legal relationship recognition for gay & lesbian North Carolinians. Why does this state fear LGBT people so much that they had to amend their constitution to prevent our community from rights & protections for our families? The homophobic state of North Carolina already denies gay & lesbian couples the fundamental freedom to marry, Amendment One now writes a ban into the state’s constitution. This amendment goes beyond restricting marriage equality & poses a serious threat to the well-being of families, children, women & seniors in North Carolina. Adam Umhoefer, American Foundation for Equal Rights Executive Director stated, “The passage of Amendment One is a profound injustice. Singling out a class of citizens for discriminatory treatment is unfair, unlawful & violates basic American values. Biden was calm & collective as he explained to Gregory that marriage should be about being loyal to someone you love, whether that marriage is between 2 women or 2 men or a man & a woman, "I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women & heterosexual men & women marrying one another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties." Chad Griffin, a member of the Obama campaign's national finance committee & about to head HRC stated, "I'm grateful that the vice president of the United States is now publicly supporting marriage equality & I hope very soon the president & the rest of our leaders, Republicans & Democrats in Congress, will fall in line.” Biden was very moving on the issue talking about the love he had seen in the eyes of a couple of kids he met for their 2 dads. David Axelrod, a senior adviser to the Obama campaign, wrote on Twitter that Biden & Obama share the view that all married couples should have the same legal rights. So this is all good. I just wish that the media would stop using the offensive term “same-sex marriage” to describe marriage equality. This romantic musical comedy tells the story of 2 twenty something lesbians whose codependent loyal friendship is fraught with erotic tension. Jamie is moving from Chicago to Brooklyn with hopes of becoming a Broadway actress. Her best friend Jessica is bummed because she thinks she’s in love with Jamie. As moving day gets closer, Jessica tries to make Jamie jealous by dating other women but Jessica’s plan backfires in a way she could never imagine. Within this world of love & lust, Jamie & Jessie must figure out how to grow together, or how to grow apart. Roger Ebert said "JAMIE AND JESSE ARE NOT TOGETHER is a sweet, appealing musical comedy." This is openly gay director Wendy Jo Carlton second feature film. Carlton's first feature-length film was the critically acclaimed HANNAH FREE staring Sharon Gless. Director Wendy Jo Carlton will be present at the screening for a Q & A following her film. In this exclusive audio interview we talked to Wendy Jo about her film, her commitment to LGBT issues & more:

For More Info & Tix:bostonlgbtfilmfest.org
Exclusive Part 1 of our 2 Part Audio Series with Boston LGBT Film Fest filmmakers appearing at this year's festival that runs through May 13th. On Thursday chairs from 11 states have come out in favor of marriage equality. Calling for the inclusion on the Dems ticket are John Burton of California, Joan Wagnon of Kansas, John Walsh of Massachusetts, Ken Martin of Minnesota, Jon Wisniewski of New Jersey, Jay Jacobs of New York, Meredith Wood Smith of Oregon, Boyd Richie of Texas, Jake Perkinson of Vermont, Dwight Pelz of Washington & Mike Tate of Wisconsin. Joining them is the Democratic National Convention chair Antonio Villaraigosa, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren & nearly 2 dozen U.S. senators. New York Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs said, "Nearly a year ago, New Yorkers stood united in supporting full marriage equality for all loving & committed families & Democrats led the way. We now see first-hand how marriage improves the lives of gay couples & their families, & strengthens businesses & communities throughout the Empire State. Marriage equality is simply the right thing to do & that's why I strongly believe that the Democratic Party should stand united for a freedom to marry plank in our national Democratic Party platform."
