It was the Best & Gayest Tony's ever: Winners In the midst of gay pride celebrations this year’s Tonys are not to be missed. They’re hosted by gay icon Neil Patrick Harris. Gay themed productions dominate this years nominations with the front runner for Best Original Musical, The Book of Mormon which features a major gay character & the favorite for Best Revival of a Play is the brilliant The Normal Heart by legendary gay rights advocate Larry Kramer. The Normal Heart also features Tony nominated performances by openly gay Joe Mantello & John Benjamin Hickey. This year other notable gay actors nominations include Rory O’Malley, the openly gay actor who plays the closeted gay missionary Elder McKinley in The Book of Mormon & Tony Sheldon, playing a transsexual woman in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The creative team behind Best Original Musical nominee Catch Me if You Can also appears as the who’s who of gay Broadway with a book by Terrence McNally Love! Valour! Compassion! & Music & Lyrics by partners Marc Shaiman & Scott Whitman (Hairspray).     Well, The Book of Mormon got the most nominations, and every single musical number in that show is a problem for the Tony censors – whether it's dialogue, or even the idea of a song – like, religion. They're struggling right now to see what number they CAN put in the show. If it doesn't get by the censors in the end, I can see myself announcing, 'Please stand by for two minutes while we black out.' It should be the edgiest Tonys for a while. And that's a good thing. Let's shake it up!
