Cher Calls-In Support to Chaz on Ellen

By Charlotte Robinson, September 14, 2011
I’m not a big fan of Dancing With the Stars. However next week on Sept. 19th "Dancing With the Stars" will feature 2 openly LGBT contestants Chaz Bono & Carson Kressley. I can’t wait to see this. Chaz was on Ellen today talking about the hatemongers that have been reacting to his appearance. Cher even phoned in to support her child. This will be a great event to watch Chaz dance. I hope he stays on long enough so we can watch his transformation like last year did for Margaret Cho. Though the show has featured gay contestants before this is the first time a transgender American will have such a huge national audience. We must watch & vote for our LGBT community. Updates to Come…:)

  1. Chaz has received hate mail like you wouldn't believe, simply for daring to dance as an out, proud transgender man on prime time TV. And while Chaz can entertain us on “Dancing With the Stars” (hopefully for many weeks to come), he like other LGBT Americans still risks unfair hurdles to being considered for and to keeping jobs, since it is legal in 29 states to discriminate based on sexual orientation and in 35 states to do so based on gender identity or expression. Whatever you choose to do next week, please take action somehow. Chaz is taking to the dance floor because he was born into a celebrity family and is using that visibility to raise awareness of LGBT issues. While that's a wonderful way to educate Americans about transgender issues, we must remember that the rates of long-term unemployment, chronic homelessness, military discharge, workplace discrimination, and violence are staggeringly high in the transgender community. While Chaz has a bright future ahead of him and is handling attacks against him well, we all know that continued problems with resources and discrimination among transgender Americans prevents this country from truly living up to its promise of "liberty and justice for all."
