Gay Undocumented Immigrants Event

By Charlotte Robinson, March 05, 2013
If you’re in the Washington DC vicinity there’s an important event addressing LGBT undocumented immigrants at the Center for American Progress this Friday March 8th at 1333 H St. NW from 11:30A to 1:30P. As you know lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender undocumented people find themselves at the intersection of two already marginalized groups—the LGBT population & the undocumented population. For this reason we are among society’s most vulnerable. Gay immigration activist Jose Antonio Vargas & founder of Define American will speak joined by panelists Gary Gates, The Williams Institute, Michael Jarecki, Law Office of Michael R. Jarecki & Maya Rupert, Policy Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. The event will be moderated by Angela Kelley, Vice President for Immigration Policy, Center for American Progress with opening remarks by Winnie Stachelberg, Executive Vice President for External Affairs at the Center for American Progress. This is a first-of-its-kind analysis & will uncover a number of key demographic characteristics about this population. The Center for American Progress will also be releasing a comprehensive report at this event outlining the particular disparities, hardships & challenges this sector of our LGBT population faces. Passing an immigration reform bill with a road map to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented individuals living in the United States would lift LGBT undocumented people out of the shadows, treat them with the dignity they deserve & enable them to become full & equal participants in our society, economy & democracy. There will be a post-event press availability with LGBT people from around the country, including undocumented immigrants, who can discuss the personal hardships they face.
A light lunch will be served. To RSVP…
