Just In: Unfortunately the film screening has been cancelled.
On the heels of the US Supreme Court cases addressing gay marriage the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in NYC is presenting a free screening of the award-winning documentary, "Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement" on Friday April 5th at 7P. The film chronicles the plaintiff Edie Windsor's four-decade romance with her partner Thea Spyer. Windsor & the filmmakers Susan Muska & Gréta Ólafsdóttir will be in attendance. "Edie & Thea" presents a lovingly crafted documentary in which life partners Edie Windsor & Thea Spyer recount how their improbable romance ignited a lifelong journey around the world & through history. Though touched by events like the civil rights movement & the Stonewall riots, Edie & Thea's relationship transcends politics & is a shining example of love's ability to endure. With that said the film has won 24 best documentary awards. After the release of the film, Thea Spyer passed away & Edie Windsor was hit with $360,000 in federal estate taxes, despite the couple's marriage having been legally recognized by the State of New York. Edie Windsor's case United States v. Windsor has wound its way through the court system & now awaiting a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court in June. The Center is honoring Edie Windsor for her contributions to the LGBT community at this year's Center Dinner gala on Thursday, April 11th at Cipriani Wall Street.
