The Provincetown International Film Festival kicked off its 15th year with LOVELACE a biopic about the infamous star of the 1970’s porn classic DEEP THROAT. The dark drama was brilliantly directed by Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman (HOWL) with Amanda Seyfried (BIG LOVE, MAMA MIA) in the title role. The cast is stellar with an amazing performance by Sharon Stone playing her unsympathetic religious mother. Lovelace’s abusive husband Chuck Traynor is portrayed by Peter Sarsgaard with supporting roles by Chris Noth, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chloë Sevigny, Eric Roberts, Debi Mazar & James Franco just to name a few. The movie is about a fragile young woman who becomes one of the first porn superstars. Though she appears to be happy on the outside in reality she’s living a nightmare inflicted by her sleazy brutal husband. Eventually she breaks free, discloses the truth & helps prevent other women from becoming similarly victimized. For a feminist any movie dealing with the underbelly of the porn industry is never easy to watch but somehow with LOVELACE you just can’t turn away. Linda Lovelace was exploited & controlled by her mentally & physically abusive husband/manager for years yet she survived to tell her story in a best selling memoir Ordeal in 1980. The film is not for meek but it really makes you stop & think. LOVELACE had its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival & is scheduled for release later this summer.
