USA Rugby & International Gay Rugby has formed a partnership to help promote a diverse & inclusive environment for players at all levels of rugby & to end LGBT discrimination in all areas of the game. Helen Carroll National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) Sports Project Director stated, “Ending LGBT discrimination in all sports has been one of NCLR’s core missions for 14 years. It’s thrilling to see USA Rugby & International Gay Rugby take these steps to eradicate homophobia in the game. Their efforts will ensure a more inclusive & secure environment for all LGBT rugby players around the world & we hope other professional organization in the U.S. & abroad will follow their example.” The National Center for Lesbian Rights made history in 2001 by becoming the first LGBT national organization to tackle rampant homophobia & transphobia in sports with the launch of its Sports Project. Since the Sports Project’s inception NCLR has worked to eliminate discrimination based on sexual orientation & gender identity in sports through advocacy, outreach & litigation. Under the leadership of former NCAA women’s basketball championship coach & athletic director Helen J. Carroll NCLR has provided assistance to hundreds of high schools & universities as well as professional athletes, coaches & sport personnel. NCLR’s Sports Project works on all levels of athletic competition, from the NCAA to the NFL, to ensure that LGBT athletes can compete & participate openly & equally.
