Edie Windsor On Marriage (Audio)

By Charlotte Robinson, September 12, 2017
We are very sad to hear about the passing of marriage icon Edie Windsor. Edie told us at the GLAD Summer Party that she was at this event because GLAD began the whole marriage movement. In this exclusive audio chat Windsor insisted that the world stop using the term “same-sex marriage” & wouldn’t you know all the mainstream media is violating that request in her passing. We agree with Edie 100% & we hope the world will now respect her wishes. For over ten years we have been trying to educate the heterosexual & LGBT community to not use the term that was conceived by Karl Rove the former White House Deputy Chief of Staff during the George W. Bush administration to raise a red flag with the religious right by using the word “sex” in describing our LGBT community. When mainstream media uses this term all you can hear is the redundancy of the word sex. When asked what she would like to see happen for LGBT equality in the next few years Edie added she would like to see LGBT homeless kids who statistically account for 50% of all homeless youth to be off the streets & receive the love & support they deserve just for being themselves. She concluded by saying she was pleased to see the progress happening for trans people in this country & hopes to see rights for not just gender but gender identity. RIP Edie Windsor. We will continue your work. LISTEN:

  1. I lost my beloved spouse Edie, and the world lost a tiny but tough as nails fighter for freedom, justice and equality. Edie was the light of my life. She will always be the light for the LGBTQ community which she loved so much and which loved her right back.

  2. Representing Edie Windsor was and will always be the greatest honor of my life. She will go down in the history books as a true American hero. With Edie’s passing, I lost not only a treasured client, but a member of my family. I know that Edie’s memory will always be a blessing to Rachel, myself, and Jacob. I also know that her memory will be a blessing not only to every LGBT person on this planet, but to all who believe in the concept of b’tzelem elohim, or equal dignity for all.

  3. The Task Force family and I are deeply saddened to hear about Edie’s death. Whether enthusiastically attending our Creating Change conference, receiving our Leadership Award, leafing through the history of the LGBTQ movement in her apartment, showing up at protests or sharing a meal and talking over the politics of the day, Edie was an activist through and through. Smart, funny and always engaging, upon receiving the Task Force's Lifetime Leadership Award in 2013, Edie proudly whipped out her original Task Force membership card and a folder of priceless Task Force documents. I, and we, learned a lot from her and will miss her. Edie changed the landscape of what same-sex couples thought was possible and she forever changed this country. My heart goes out to Judith and all who loved, learned from and were inspired by Edie.
