It was amazing to watch this interview on The Rachel Maddow Show/MSNBC & if you missed it you can watch it here. Megan Rapinoe Co-Captain of the U.S. National Women's Soccer brought the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup trophy to the show & talked to Rachel about the World Cup win, her evolving fame, equal pay for women & of course Trump. When Maddow asked whether Trump has invited the team to the White House Rapinoe stated, “Not publicly & not to my knowledge & certainly not in the way that everyone else is invited to the White House or not invited to the White House.” The more important issue is equal pay with Megan along with 27 other members of the U.S. national team as a plaintiff in a lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation. That gender discrimination suit accused the federation of paying female players less than their male counterparts on the men’s national team despite having the same job responsibilities & despite having had far more success on the field. The reality is the World Champion Women’s team is paid 18 cents on the dollar that the men receive. So the shouts at the win of “USA” & “Equal Pay” that filled the stadium after their World Cup win were incredibly relevant. Of course we wish that having these two lesbian icons in conversation was longer & unfortunately they never addressed our LGBTQ issues. Perhaps we can look forward to another conversation in the near future that will address LGBTQ equality especially as we head into the 2020 election.
