Organizers have confirmed that more than 57 million people joined the world’s first virtual Global Pride event for our LGBTQ community & allies in at least 163 countries. Content included music, drag performances, speeches & messages from activists & archive footage from Pride events around the world. Performing artists included Laverne Cox, Elton John, Denise Ho, Adam Lambert, Olivia Newton John, Pussy Riot, Kesha and Pabllo Vittar appeared alongside world leaders including former US Vice President Joe Biden, Prime Ministers Justin Trudeau, Xavier Bettel, Erna Solberg and Leo Varadkar, HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson & more. The event also gave focus to the Black Lives Matter movement in acknowledgement of the international response to the deaths of George Floyd, Tony McCabe & others that has prompted a historic demand for racial justice. Black Lives Matter founder Alicia Garza spoke during the Global Pride ‘main stage’ segments. Natalie Thompson, Co-Chair of Global Pride & Capital Pride in Washington, DC stated, “As a Black woman in the LGBTQIA+ community, it was so important to confront the systemic racism & violence facing my Black brothers, sisters & non-binary siblings, in the larger culture & within the LGBTQIA+ community. Global Pride’s tens of millions of viewers learned, cried & surely were moved to action to further confront hate & prejudice & fight for equality. This was a historic success in every way & I was proud & humbled to work beside so many diverse colleagues from around the world & provide the community with the kind of hope & inspiration the Pride movement has for decades. The work continues & we will never be silenced.”
