Update: Janis Ian Wins Best Spoken Word Album for "Society's Child: My Autobiography" :) Congrats Janis!!
Lesbians are actually taking over the Best Spoken Word Category at tonight’s Grammy Awards. The three extremely talented & respected gay women are Janis Ian, Rachel Maddow & Ellen DeGeneres. Ian is nominated for her unique audio version of her autobiography, “Society’s Child,” which is punctuated by her vocals of choruses & relevant lines of her songs that describe each chapter of her life. Rachel Maddow takes on a more serious topic with “The Unmooring Of American Military Power,” while Ellen DeGeneres brings her comedy to us in the audio version of her book “Seriously... I'm Kidding.” Talk about a tough competition the other two nominees are Bill Clinton for “Back To Work: Why We Need Smart Government For A Strong Economy” & Michelle Obama “American Grown.” We learned earlier that Michelle Obama does not plan to attend. The Grammys will air on CBS at 8P ET/PT. Last month we talked to Janis Ian about her Grammy nomination & LGBT issues on OUTTAKE VOICES. When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights Janis stated, “The same as my commitment to any civil rights, to women’s rights or children’s rights. Of course I have a different vested interest in the gay community because I am gay & I would certainly enjoy the tax advantages that straight people have & the inheritance advantages & things like social security. But I’ve always been a civil rights advocate across the board. That’s how I was raised.”
Good Luck To The Nominees!! :)
