In a time when white male mogul maniacs rule the land I can’t think of a scarier way to celebrate Halloween in 2019 then to take a look back over the last four decades & reflect on how someone like Trump became president of America “Land of the Free & Home of the Brave”. We haven’t had a woman rank this high in the corporate hierarchy in this country since Marjorie Post the socialite & entrepreneur of General Foods who also built Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. Women need to rise up once again to the top tier of this phenomenon. The interesting thing is all four men have indulged in mainstream media. Trump would have never become president if it weren’t for his NBC/Comcast TV series “Celebrity Apprentice”. Bill Gates enhanced his position by creating MSNBC, Jeff Bezos dabbles in the media by buying the Washington Post & jumping into the streaming game with Amazon Prime Video & Mark Zuckerberg has taken social networking technology into the 21st century. Now the saving grace of Gates, Bezos & Zuckerberg are their philanthropy efforts for many underfunded causes that can possibly move our country into a better place which brings us back to Trump who on Halloween 2019 is headed for an impeachment vote. So we’re all left wondering what will today bring, a Trick or Treat for our democracy. Let’s hope that in these very trying times that we wake up from our technical overload & get back to basics of compassion & empathy which is the only way that we can really move this country forward. To be continued….
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Gretchen Wylder Speaks OUT (AUDIO)
This week I talked with Gretchen Wylder the creator & writer of “These Thems” an award-winning intersectional queer digital comedy series. “These Thems” directed by Jett Garrison is a 7 episode fully narrative series that follows the lives of a newly out lesbian making up for lost time, a non-binary educator intent on training the straights, a transgender man who is comfortably in the closet & a lovelorn gay best friend. With many people living beyond the gender binary identities very few explicitly non-binary characters are represented in mainstream media. Non-binary gender identity may be one of the least understood labels falling under the LGBTQ+ umbrella simply because it’s also one of the least visible. Wylder is among the very few writers & show creators paying consideration to non-binary identities & gender non-conformity that’s moving the needle for accurate depiction. “These Thems” set in NYC tells the story of Gretchen played by Wylder who after realizing she may be a lesbian befriends non-binary dog walker Vero (Victoria “Vico” Ortiz) who decides to stop training dogs & start training the straights. Vero takes Gretchen under their wing & introduces Gretchen to the queer world as she navigates what it's like to be newly out at the age of 30. Vero's childhood friend Asher (Shaan Dasani) isn't out as trans at work & is faced with the decision to out himself when an opportunity for an LGBTQ account pops up. Gretchen's gay best friend & roommate Kevin (Nick Park) is looking for love & may have found it in Asher. I talked to Wylder about what she hopes to accomplish with “These Thems” & her spin on our LGBTQ issues in this exclusive audio podcast. LISTEN

Boston Lesbian Founders To Be Honored

Prior to Stonewall you could be arrested just for being yourself. Sue Reamer Rally Coordinating Committee Member stated, “At a time when safe public social space in Greater Boston was non-existent for lesbians, six of these lesbians created safe social spaces in churches & in their homes where lesbians feel relaxed, safe & comfortable together! It is time to honor these generous, brave lesbian founders & those also who subsequently created social groups for older lesbians.” This event will be held Sunday October 27th from 1P to 3P at the Brookline Senior Center on the 3rd Floor Auditorium at 93 Winchester Street in Brookline, MA. An honoring ceremony will celebrate the founders & members of seven Boston area lesbian organizations. Sue Katz will host the event & will recognize DOB (Daughters of Bilitis) founders Lois Johnson & Sheri Claire Barden; Lesbian Liberation founder Sue Katz; OLE (Older Lesbian Energy) founders Toni Schiff & Araya Fast; Ova 4D (Lesbians Over 40) founders Candy Feldt & Doreen Michaels; (Rally For Lesbians 55+) founder Jan Taylor; Boston OLAC Chapter (Old Lesbians Organizing for Change) founders Sarah Pearlman & Alice Fisher & Flashback Elders of Color founders Shirley Royster & Gloria Charles. The Push For No Chick-fil-A In UK
The notorious anti-LGBTQ fast food franchise Chick-fil-A opened their first store at
The Oracle shopping center in Reading, UK earlier this month & is set to close after faced with continual protests over the chain's anti-LGBTQ stance. UK human rights activist Peter Tatchell stated, “This is a great victory. It sends a warning to big corporations that they cannot get away with funding anti-LGBT+ hate groups. I hope it will deter others. Huge congratulations & thanks to the many LGBT+ activists who helped get this result. They show the power of collective action.” The Oracle stated "We always look to introduce new concepts for our customers, however, we have decided on this occasion that the right thing to do is to only allow Chick-fil-A to trade with us for the initial six-month pilot period & not to extend the lease any further." Chick-fil-A had previously misled the BBC stating, “Our giving has always focused on youth & education. We have never donated with the purpose of supporting a social or political agenda.” The truth of the matter is as of 2018 Chick fil-A reportedly continues to donate to anti-LGBT groups such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes which opposes marriage equality & restricts participation by our LGBTQ youth. When Chick-fil-A attempted to open in Boston, MA in 2012 the late Boston Mayor Thomas Menino stated,
“There is no place for discrimination on Boston's Freedom Trail & no place for your company alongside it." However outside of Boston Chick-fil-A does exist & hopefully Massachusetts will realize there’s no room for hate in this state.
Peter Tatchell concluded, “I hope the US will follow suit & drive this bigoted chain out of business. Chick-fil-A’s opposition to LGBT+ equality merits a boycott by contractors & consumers.”

Spirit Day Against LGBTQ Youth Bullying
Spirit Day is being celebrated on October 17th & began in 2010 when a high school student Brittany McMillan created a tumblr post asking students to wear purple following the suicide deaths of several LGBTQ young people. Since then hundreds of celebrities, media outlets, brands, landmarks, sports leagues, tech leaders, influencers, faith groups, school districts, organizations, colleges & universities have become the most visible anti LGBTQ bullying campaign & united show of support for our LGBTQ youth. Purple symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President & CEO stated, “With LGBTQ rights under attack on a near-daily basis, Spirit Day could not be happening at a more critical time. On Thursday, LGBTQ young people will be flooded with messages of support from their peers, teachers, favorite celebrities, athletes & more notables all reminding them that they are not alone. What a powerful & refreshing change of pace from the divisive rhetoric & bullying that have become all too common today’s charged political & cultural climate.” Joining OUTTAKE MEDIA in support of Spirit Day are CNBC, Good Morning America, TODAY, CNN New Day, Despierta America, EXTRA, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, KABC-TV, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Dr. Oz Show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, The View, Strahan, Sara & Keke, Despierta América & Univision. Celebrities standing up for Spirit Day include Andy Cohen, James Corden, Billy Ray Cyrus, Helen Hunt, Jazz Jennings, Nicole Maines, Ross Matthews, Olivia Newton-John, Trevor Noah, Adam Rippon, Paul Reiser, Angelica Ross, Willow Smith, Tegan & Sara & more.

National LGBTQ Coming Out Day
Since 1988 National Coming Out Day is acknowledged on October 11th which is the day that if you haven’t come out yet about your LGBTQ sexual orientation to your family, friends & colleagues it’s time to live as your authentic self & be counted. As Harvey Milk stated, “Burst down those closet doors once & for all, stand up & start to fight.”
So here we are in 2019 continuing the fight with the Trump administration trying to push our LGBTQ community back in the closet or worse erase our community completely. We need to pass the Equality Act now & provide comprehensive non-discrimination protections that will bring our laws into the 21st century. This week the US Supreme Court heard 3 cases of LGBTQ discrimination against our community. With Trump’s anti-LGBTQ Supreme Court appointees the outcome is iffy. Then we’re also dealing with a majority of LGBTQ K-12 students feeling unsafe at school as a result of their sexual orientation & more than one-third reported feeling unsafe because of how they express their gender. To reverse this trend in conjunction with National Coming Out Day the Family Acceptance Project has released a new series of posters that are designed to be used in public spaces to share key information from FAP’s peer-reviewed studies. Dr. Caitlin Ryan, Director of the FAP stated, “The posters are key resources to help families & providers understand the critical need for family support & the impact that specific family accepting & rejecting behaviors have on risk & well-being for LGBTQ children & youth.”

Why We Love Pete Buttigieg
As we head towards the 2020 election presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg addresses our LGBTQ issues. Buttigieg has released his plan ‘Becoming Whole: A New Era for LGBTQ+ Americans,’ a comprehensive policy that brings Americans together to break down the walls of exclusion & secure full equality for our LGBTQ community. With a plan grounded in the real lived experiences of LGBTQ Americans Buttigieg’s plan covers issues of Equality, Health, Youth & Families, Community, Justice, Honor & Leadership. Buttigieg stated, “Twenty years ago, an awkward teenager at St. Joe High, who didn’t know a single out LGBTQ+ student there, never would have imagined how far we would come. Yet discrimination & the ever-present fear of it continue to govern aspects of LGBTQ+ people’s lives who question if they can be who they are & keep their job, or come out at school knowing they might be bullied for it. When I’m President, we will implement solutions bold enough to meet the challenges the LGBTQ+ community faces while bringing the American people together to understand that our freedoms are bound up in each other.” Under a Buttigieg Administration LGBTQ+ individuals & communities will be supported in every aspect of their daily lives, from equitable health care to workplace protections to a new national mentorship program that will build up a sense of belonging among LGBTQ+ youth. As president, Pete will ensure anti-discrimintation is the law of the land & work to put an end to the violence that is taking the lives of transgender Americans.

Historic LGBTQ Art Exhibition
The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) & Virginia Pride are presenting a special work of art by artist Jumper Maybach in the Story of Virginia exhibition that runs now through February 16th 2020. The work that Virginia Pride commissioned & donated to the museum depicts the Virginia State Capitol & represents an important addition to the museum’s growing LGBTQ collections. Jamie Bosket VMHC President stated, “As the state’s history museum, we are firmly dedicated to representing all who are a part of the Virginia experience. As such we are deeply committed to better reflecting the diversity of the state, including preserving & sharing the stories of LGBTQ+ communities in the Commonwealth.” Jumper Maybach added, “It’s an honor & privilege to be included in this monumental & historic exhibition. Having one of my pieces hang in the Virginia Museum of History & Culture is truly a highlight of my career.” The VMHC’s display also features documents & artifacts from the VMHC collections including a program from the fifth annual Richmond Lesbian & Gay Pride Day held in 1989 which was the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York & a joint custody consent order granted to lesbian couple Mary Townley & Carol Schall upon the birth of Mary’s daughter in 1998. The couple became plaintiffs in the case of Bostic v. Rainey, which overturned Virginia’s ban on marriage equality in 2014. The museum is collaborating with Virginia's LGBTQ community to document these important stories by collecting oral histories, images, documents & artifacts. Virginia Museum of History & Culture is located at 428 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond Virginia.

Supreme Court & LGBTQ Civil Rights
The United States Supreme Court will hear arguments today regarding three LGBTQ employment discrimination cases. These cases will determine whether LGBTQ employees are protected from discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The best case scenario for our LGBTQ community would be that the Supreme Court will rule that the federal ban on sex discrimination also means employers can’t discriminate because of sexual orientation or gender identity. The Trump administration is fighting to convince the court that sex discrimination should have a limited interpretation. Whatever the result is our LGBTQ community is in for another historic fight for equality. Erin Uritus, CEO of Out & Equal Workplace Advocates stated, “Out & Equal works with the world’s largest employers, businesses & government to create workplaces, all around the globe, where all of us are equal, belong & thrive. We are proud to have helped galvanize the 206 major businesses who signed onto the amicus brief. Representing more than 7 million employees & more than 5 trillion in revenue, these companies told the Supreme Court that Title VII protections are for all of us, including the LGBTQ community & to decide otherwise would be as bad for business as it would be for the country. This case is not creating a new space of equality, it is affirming the inalienable equality that our country’s framers intended & which our communities have fought for. Every generation has had to take up the mantle of civil rights. As women, as people of color, as people of faith, as people without faith, as people with disabilities, as LGBTQ people – we are all equal under the law…”

Selisse Berry Joins Equality Florida
Selisse Berry the founder & architect of the nation’s largest LGBTQ business organization Out & Equal has joined the Board of Directors for Equality Florida. Berry has worked for decades to engage global business leaders on issues of LGBTQ workplace nondiscrimination & now brings that authority to the fight for full equality in the State of Florida. Berry stated, “When we launched Out & Equal, few Fortune 500 companies had protections for their LGBTQ employees. Now, those protections are nearly universal. I’m excited to join Equality Florida in the work to secure full equality for the LGBTQ community & help state leaders realize what the business community has come to know: that embracing inclusion is key to creating healthy institutions.” Stratton Pollitzer, Equality Florida Deputy Director concluded, “The State of Florida will set the tone for equality across the country. Selisse knows better than anyone that treating LGBTQ people with dignity & respect is good for business & the right thing to do. If Florida wants to compete for talent & stake its claim as an economy that is equal & open to all – the time for comprehensive LGBTQ protections is now.” Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s LGBTQ community. Through education, grassroots organizing, coalition building & lobbying they are changing Florida so that no one suffers harassment or discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. A few years ago I talked to Selisse in this exclusive audio interview on OUTTAKE VOICES.

Next Step For LGBTQ Civil Rights
Next Tuesday on October 8th the Supreme Court will hear a trio of major cases that could determine the future of our LGBTQ employment rights. Two of the cases Altitude Express Inc. v Zarda & Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia center on men who say they were fired from their jobs for being gay & the third case R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes v. EEOC & Aimee Stephens focuses on a transgender woman who was fired after informing her boss that she was transitioning. These cases represent the next step in the movement for LGBTQ equality. According to a report by Public Religion Research Institute most Americans falsely believe that there are federal nondiscrimination protections in place for LGBTQ Americans. The reality is that less than half of U.S. states have laws that ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Without any federal protections LGBTQ people can be legally fired or kicked out of a restaurant just for being who they are in a majority of the country & those states aren’t about to add protections anytime soon. Over the past 10 years only one state Utah has passed a law banning anti-LGBTQ discrimination. So the Supreme Court cases on October 8th could determine if the Civil Rights Act of 1964, under Title VII’s ban on sex discrimination in employment will extend to sexual orientation & gender identity. If the Supreme Court votes in favor of the employees this will bring nationwide employment protections for LGBTQ people for the first time in U.S. history.
