Lesbian Alison Nathan Becomes Fed Judge

The U.S. Senate confirmed by a vote of 48-44 openly gay Alison Nathan to serve as a federal judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. There were some unhappy campers from a conservative women’s group about the “impartiality & judicial temperament” of the out lesbian nominee. Nathan has become the 2nd of 4 openly gay appointees from President Obama to be confirmed to the federal bench. In July as you remember the Senate confirmed J. Paul Oetken also to the Southern District of New York. “The President welcomes the confirmation of Alison Nathan. She will serve the American people well from the District Court bench,”a White House spokesman said.

Gay Widow Gets Presidential Citizens Medal

Janice Langbehn has been awarded the 2011 Presidential Citizens Medal. The medal will be awarded to 13 citizens. In 2007 Janice was refused access to her dying partner by a Miami hospital staff because of her sexual orientation. After hearing Janice’s story, President Obama revised our hospital visitation regulations to include protections for same-gender couples. "It breaks my heart to even imagine how it must feel to watch the person you love most in this world slip away without having a chance to say goodbye. Janice's bravery in the face of tragedy & her courage to share her story in order to make a lasting difference for all of us is a true inspiration. We offer her our most enthusiastic congratulations & gratitude to this advocate who has helped make our nation a safer place for everyone." said Mike Thompson, Acting President of GLAAD. The Citizens Medal was established in 1969 to recognize American outstanding citizens who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens. Janice will accept the award on Thursday, October 20th, which also happens to be Spirit Day -- a day on which millions of Americans will wear purple in support of LGBT youth. Janice has committed to wearing purple at the awards ceremony. Updates to Come...:)

Pioneer Gay Activist Frank Kameny Dies

Sad news came yesterday that Franklin Kameny one of the most prominent gay rights leaders died in his home from natural causes at the age of 86. His death came less than a month before a planned celebration of the 50th anniversary of Kameny’s founding of the Mattachine Society of Washington. This was the first gay rights org in the nation’s capital. Last month we talked to Bob Witeck about his commitment to LGBT equality. He talks about his relationship with Kameny & the Mattachine Society being the only org at the time to reach out to in the 1960’s in this exclusive audio byte.

LGBT National Coming Out Day

Coming OUT is definitely a rite of passage for our LGBT community. We must be visible to be successful in gaining our civil rights. As Harvey Milk said, “Burst down those closet doors once & for all, stand up & start to fight.” National Coming Out Day is celebrated on Oct. 11th in the USA & Oct.12th in the UK.
My coming out story:
I remember how difficult it was for me. I tossed & turned about telling my parents. Then their was this weekend when my girlfriend & I stayed overnight at my parents beach house. We were playing the game of separate bedrooms. The rooms were divided by the only bathroom in the house. It was early in the morning & I was having work anxieties so I got into bed with Sue to talk about it. Within minutes the door swung open & my Dad on the way to the bathroom caught us in bed together. We weren't doing anything but he knew & ran to tell my Mom.....I was pretty much disowned for a year but they got over it. Before my mom passed-away she said how lucky she was that all her children had found someone to love...:)

Happy Gay Columbus Day

It’s interesting that many countries celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas which occurred on October 12, 1492 as the real date. The event is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza in many countries in Latin America, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad & Fiesta Nacional in Spain & as Día de las Américas in Uruguay. These holidays have been celebrated unofficially since the late 18th century & officially in various areas since the early 20th century. Of course in the 21st century we hardly ever celebrate it on the official day so we can enjoy a long holiday weekend. Since 1971 Canadian Thanksgiving has coincided with the observance of Columbus Day in the United States. It seems like somehow the Pilgrims got involved. Of course our Thanksgiving comes later on the last Thursday in November. The Pilgrims landed first in Provincetown as you know. Not the Plymouth Rock scenario. Speaking of P-Town, Women’s Week is taking place there now through October 16th. There are still lots of rooms available if you want to make the scene...:)

Gay Marriage Is A Conservative Value

The homophobic conservatives conclude their Value Voter Summit in Washington D.C. with a Morning Worship Service led by the top anti-gay hate monger of them all Tony Perkins, President, FRC Action & Family Research Council. As they condemn our LGBT families in their warped perception of conservative values the UK moves closer to marriage equality. Prime Minister David Cameron of the Conservative Party has called for marriage equality in the United Kingdom. "President Reagan & the Republican Party expanded upon the achievements of Margaret Thatcher & the Conservative Party. We should now look to the example set by David Cameron in embracing marriage equality. It is the conservative thing to do," stated Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director R. Clarke Cooper.
