LGBTQ Leaders Speak OUT

LGBTQ leaders react to Trump’s first State of the Union Address. Heavily contested topics were brought to the forefront of Trump’s speech including immigration, tax reform & religious freedom. As expected Trump did not mention “LGBT” or commit to safeguarding the protections & civil rights of LGBT people in his speech. Jessica Stern, Executive Director of OutRight Action International stated, “I love immigrants. I love people who are not American. I love all workers not just veterans. I love healthcare. I love equal rights & non-discrimination, not coded 'religious freedom.' I love modern interpretations of the US Constitution. I love the visa lottery. I love all families, not just the nuclear family. I love everyone who opposes this regime of empire, misogyny & white supremacy. Today, tomorrow & as long as is needed, we will work for justice & all those we love.” Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD concluded, "Managing to read a pre-written speech off a teleprompter does not make one Presidential or lend a single ounce of legitimacy to Trump's anti-LGBTQ agenda. Trump has spent the past year targeting vulnerable communities & surrounding himself with anti-black, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, anti-women & anti-LGBTQ activists with the goal of exacerbating discrimination & erasing LGBTQ Americans from the fabric of this nation." Prior to the State of the Union Address we talked to some of the nation’s leading civil rights organizations to outline plans for resistance efforts in 2018 with an emphasis on judicial nominations.

The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has issued a Super Bowl challenge to the Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus. If the New England Patriots defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in the February 4th Super Bowl in Minneapolis the Philadelphia Chorus will perform “Please Come to Boston” by Dave Loggins for the BGMC YouTube Channel. If the Eagles are victorious BGMC will perform “Philadelphia Freedom” & make it available online. Nick Foles is young & healthy, unlike New England’s quarterback, whose name escapes me. We’re confident that we’ll emerge the winner of this contest.” Both the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus & the Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus are members are GALA Choruses. LGBTQ Hate Crime Murders Rise

The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) released their annual national research report on hate violence targeting our LGBTQ & HIV-affected communities. In August 2017 NCAVP recorded the highest number of anti-LGBTQ homicides in their 20-year history of tracking & released a mid-year report to raise awareness of this disturbing increase. Since the release of that report in August of 2017 the number of reported homicides continued to increase reaching a total of 52 reported anti-LGBTQ homicides in all of 2017 which is the highest number ever recorded & an 86% increase from 2016. Beverly Tillery, Executive Director of the Anti-Violence Project (AVP) stated, “This report is a wake-up call for all of us. Our communities live in an increasingly hostile & dangerous climate, after a year of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric & policies coming from the White House, Federal government agencies, state & local sources & in our communities across the country. Anti-LGBTQ violence has long been a crisis, but NCAVP has watched the escalation of violence this past year with great concern. I urge everyone to read the stories & look at the photos of the 52 individuals lost to hate violence in 2017; they are our friends, family, co-workers & fellow LGBTQ community members. NCAVP will continue to say their names & re-commits to doing all we can to prevent hate violence & support survivors. We must bring more attention & action to deal with this epidemic of violence & work across all of our diverse communities to protect those most vulnerable & stand up to the hostile forces that have created this unacceptable climate of hate.”

LGBTQ Task Force Conference

Thousands of LGBTQ activists & allies are expected to attend the LGBTQ Task Force’s Creating Change Conference which is celebrating its 30th year & takes place Wednesday January 24th through Sunday January 28th at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, DC. This is an extremely important LGBTQ event as we head into the second year of the hate-fueled Trump administration. Creating Change Conference is the foremost political, leadership & skills-building conference for the LGBTQ social justice movement, convening over 3,500 LGBTQ activists from around the country to learn, connect & resist. Sue Hyde, founder of the event stated, "The first Creating Change was in 1988, to build a stronger LGBTQ political movement; to break the isolation that organizers & activists said they felt often being the only or one of the few people in their own city or community doing the work & to create a space where the movement could keep itself. This 30th conference in Washington, DC, where so much of the opposition we face is coming from, will be a historic one for our community as mark a year of tyranny under Trump." The opening plenary panel will discuss mobilization against a hostile administration with special guests Andrea Jenkins, the newly elected vice president of the Minneapolis City Council, Farhana Khera, the executive director of Muslim Advocates, Urvashi Vaid, Indian-American LGBTQ rights activist & former executive director of the Task Force & Diego Sanchez, the director of policy for PFLAG & was the first openly transgender staff member to serve on Capitol Hill.

LGBTQ Leaders Speak OUT

The Health & Human Services Office has created a new Division on Conscience & Religious Freedom, which will legalize discrimination for homophobic & anti-choice healthcare workers allowing them to refuse to treat transgender patients, LGBTQ people, those living with HIV & AIDS or those in need of abortion services by claiming moral or religious objections to doing their job. Rea Carey, Executive Director of the National LGBTQ Task Force stated, “We are not fooled: The new office announced this morning is meant to make it easier for people to discriminate, not to protect people of faith. Health professionals have a duty to care for all their patients regardless of one's gender identity, sexual orientation, faith, creed, race, political views, gender, or disability & no one should be denied care for being who they are.” Michael Adams CEO of SAGE added, “Today’s announcement by the Trump administration -- allowing healthcare providers to deny LGBT & especially, transgender patients & others critical care in the name of religion -- is a horrifying next step in its coordinated effort to allow discrimination on religious grounds. Our federal government is creating a dystopian world in which it places the rights of those who discriminate over the care of people.” Sean Cahill, PhD, Director of Health Policy Research at The Fenway Institute concluded “Changes in regulations & guidance overseeing health & human services & the appointment of judges who are hostile to LGBT people, have made LGBT people much more vulnerable to discrimination in health care, social services, employment & access to government services.”Updates to Come.....

New Show Megabytes! The Musical

Megabytes! The Musical, written & directed by Morris Bobrow is a world premiere musical comedy revue that begins previews January 19th & 20th at the Shelton Theater in San Francisco. This is a limited 7-week engagement with opening night on January 26th & runs through March 3rd at 8P. The show takes a humorous look at how we navigate technology in our lives. It’s about the frustrations, anxieties, annoyance & occasional joys we encounter as we all struggle to cope with the quotidian challenges created by technology. The point of view of the show is that of the average person using tech devices, not that of a “techie”. The comedy arises from the situations, positive & negative the majority of us encounter in working with these so-called “user-friendly” technological tools. This revue format is a series of 20 plus observational songs & sketches, each depicting its own joy & frustration of living our lives in the modern technological age with varying results. Director Morris Bobrow stated, “You will relate to the comic situations of the songs & sketches if you ever had to create a password with complex rules, Googled yourself, frozen with anxiety before hitting Send, needed tech advice from a youngster, bounced among tech firms, yearned for more likes, or lusted for virality.” Megabytes! The Musical features Bay Area actors David Goodwin, Kim Larsen, Lisa McHenry & Deborah Russo. Ben Kein plays piano & serves as the musical director. The show runs Fridays & Saturdays January 19th through March 3rd at the Shelton Theater in San Francisco with tickets $30 for general admission & $25 for seniors & students.

USA Falling Down The Trump Hole

America has been subjected to the lowest common denominator of leadership for nearly a year now since this administration came into power. We have endured a great surge backwards watching everything that this country stands for in jeopardy of evaporating. Our LGBTQ community has fought so hard for marriage equality but are still denied federal protections in the workplace. Last year we successfully came together & fought for our transgender community to obtain the right to serve in the military. Now we wait to hear if the United States Supreme Court will do the right thing & rule against Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission or our LGBTQ community may enter an extremely dark time in this country in the name of religious exemptions. Watching mainstream media cover Trump’s shithole mentality only shows us all that either we continue to spiral down with this vulgar embarrassing administration or stand tall & yell stop this madness, we’re better than this. Yesterday being Martin Luther King Day should be a wake-up call for us all at a moment when our country feels hopelessly divided. It’s time to push the scale back towards equality & not stop until it’s accomplished. Dr. King stated that "True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice" which is something we haven’t seen much lately. Remember that this nation cannot become what it's capable of being until it provides opportunity & equality to all Americans.

This year besides the best parties on the planet, The Dinah is proud to be an active community collaborator teaming up with some of the top LGBTQ players in Arts & Entertainment to help promote & raise women’s visibility in films/TV & on the web. Mariah Hanson, Founder & Producer of the Dinah stated, “Throughout my thirty-year career, whether as a club promoter or as the producer of the world's largest internationally renowned event, I have supported film in its many incantations as often as I can. Our diverse & poignant stories must be told. Allowing the world to see an inside view of our beautiful & often challenging LGBTQ lives is one of the best ways we can break barriers, create equality & live in a more tolerant & compassionate world. Our stories connect us through our shared humanity & in a sense celebrate what binds us rather than what divides us.” This year The Dinah is partnering with Outfest, the Los Angeles LGBTQ film Festival, Tello, the first lesbian network producing & distributing high quality web series with a lesbian focus Films & Revry, LGBTQ digital streaming platform.

Mississippi Goddamn Again

Nina Simone sang it best in her 1964 song “Mississippi Goddamn” during the Civil Rights Movement but now we’re confronted once again with HB 1523 in Mississippi that blatantly discriminates against our LGBTQ community in the name of religious exemptions. Why the Supreme Court of the United States decided not to hear a challenge to Mississippi’s HB 1523 could be anyone’s guess. Either they have decided to do the right thing & rule against Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission or our LGBTQ community may enter an extremely dark time in this country that reflects something familiar to Nazi Germany attacking Jews during “Kristallnacht” the Night Of Broken Glass. Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD stated, “This latest punt on LGBTQ rights by the nation’s highest court promotes state-stationed discrimination by upholding a law that allows hotels, ER doctors, business owners & even pediatricians to legally deny services to hardworking LGBTQ families in Mississippi. While freedom of religion is a fundamental right, it should never give people the right to impose their belief on others & openly discriminate against others in the name of religious exemptions.” This bill is totally putting our LGBTQ community in harms way. GLAAD has been on the ground in Mississippi working with local organizations like the Mississippi Gulf Coast Rainbow Center, the Spectrum Center & Joshua Generation MCC to help accelerate acceptance for LGBTQ people in the state & protect them from discrimination since the HB 1523 debate began. Global Leaders Nuclear War Games

Trump continues to provoke North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over nuclear weapons tweeting that he has a “much bigger & more powerful” nuclear button than North Korea. Lillyanne Daigle, Chief Spokesperson for Beyond the Bomb, the new grassroots movement to stop nuclear war stated, “Once again, Trump’s reckless Twitter antics put the American public & the world in harm’s way. His antagonism of Kim Jong-un is sophomoric & incredibly dangerous. Trump can’t be trusted with a Twitter account, let alone nuclear weapons, yet he has thousands of them at his immediate disposal if he decides to back up his schoolyard bravado with force. Trump’s behavior reinforces time & again that we can no longer tolerate a system that gives any single person the sole authority to launch nuclear weapons & yet Republicans & Democrats alike seem content to sit on the sidelines while Trump edges us closer to the nuclear war. Members of Congress must not wait for nuclear missiles to hit the air before they act. Trump’s tweet underscores the urgency of reining in his unchecked power to single-handedly start nuclear war. That’s why we’re calling on Congress to get off the sidelines and support emergency measures like the ‘Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act.’ It’s clear that Donald Trump’s outrageous rhetoric can only escalate an already volatile crisis on the Korean peninsula and put us on the fast track to nuclear war. The window for Congress to prevent this nightmare scenario is rapidly shrinking. It’s time to put a stop to this madness.” Beyond the Bomb is building a much needed grassroots movement to move us back from the brink of nuclear war, dismantle the nuclear system & to secure a just future for all.

Global Human Rights In 2018

It’s hard moving forward in America at the moment when it comes to human rights because we’re dealing with an administration in this country that continues to show no empathy towards its citizens yet continually praises its failing political corporate agenda. If you’re a minority in this country 2017 showed us the worse of mankind ending with the #MeToo campaign that has now morphed into 'Time's Up'. However, all of this is just part of the worldwide dilemma of heading into another year trying to reach full equality & human rights for all people. Last week on OUTTAKE VOICES™ we asked best-selling author Joie Lamar about how she sees our LGBTQ community moving forward in this administration. Joie stated, “Well it’s two steps backward for every one step forward and even more under this administration & if you’re old enough to vote we need to get out there & vote with your heart & your head for what is right. I think we need to stay positive. We fight so much for our rights as LGBTQ people in the community but we need to fight for rights of people in general. This administration is very good at dividing & we need to find a unity & we need to keep saying we are human. I think we tend to say we’re lesbians & we want equal rights; we’re women & we want equal rights. You know what, we’re humans & we demand what we deserve as human beings. We have to keep saying that.” Get moving America. There’s just 300+ days until the midterm elections & the chance to get back on track.
