Ryan Douglass the acclaimed author of the new horror novel ‘Night of Madness’ will be leading a virtual reading & conversation of his book through Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library (SNMAL)’s ‘A Conversation With’ series on September 1st at 6:30P via Zoom. ‘Night of Madness’ follows teen influencers who compete in a horror-movie themed overnight competition only to realize the real test is staying alive in this chilling, blood-soaked horror novel from New York Times bestselling author Ryan Douglass. Mara is a horror buff whose only fond memories of her dad are bonding over movies by Jack Stanley—the producer of the eighties. Stanley’s campy slasher movies may have kept Mara’s fraught parental relationship on life support & gained a cult following but the man himself has faded from the public eye…until he announces a contest centered around Asylum his most terrifying film. Five teen influencers are invited to spend the night on the fully constructed set; whoever sticks it out until morning wins 100K. Stuck in a dead-end job Mara seriously needs that cash. She may not be a famous influencer but there has to be a way to manufacture an online presence that will capture Stanley’s attention. With the help of her brother & best friend Mara finds some creative solutions to her dilemma & lands herself onto the roster of the lucky chosen few by way of her engaging authenticity. American Premiere For Forbidden Play

In Florida Plays Of Wilton announced that it will present the U.S. premiere of Forbidden! a groundbreaking drama that was lost to time & widely regarded by many scholars as the world's first coming-out play. Written by Dutch novelist & playwright Jo M. van IJssel de Schepper-Becker & originally presented in Rotterdam in 1922 the public reaction to the play was immediate & hostile leading to the show being cancelled after just 2 performances. Now a century later after being translated by theater historian Laurence Senelick the play is being given new life as director Ronnie Larsen presents a limited 6-week engagement Wednesday August 19th to Tuesday September 29th at The Foundry, 2306 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors, FL. Forbidden! will have its official opening night on Thursday August 27th & is being sponsored by The Warten Foundation in the hope that as many people as possible will see this rediscovered & timeless production. Director Ronnie Larsen stated, “I’ve spent most of my life producing gay theater & I couldn’t believe I had never heard of this play. What amazes me most about Forbidden! is that a female playwright was saying things about gay people that the rest of society wasn’t ready to hear a hundred years ago. Now, audiences in South Florida will be among the very few in the world who have ever had the chance to see it & we're very proud to give it the full run it deserves." The cast of Forbidden! features Plays of Wilton alumni Seth Trucks (Fall Well), Sara Grant (Fall Well), Nicole Hulett (The Sound of Music), Alex Martinez (Torch Song) & Chad Raven (The Actors). Tickets are $10 and available now.

American Healthcare Decline Continues

First the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) signed into law last month will affect millions of Americans with cuts over $1 trillion in federal healthcare funding. This will significantly restructures Medicaid eligibility, scale back the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace support placing new restrictions on Medicare & alters coverage. Now the current administration released a rule that will prohibit federal Medicaid dollars from being used to provide care to trans adolescents under 18 & federal Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) funds from covering care for trans individuals under 19 if allowed to take effect. The rule takes effect October 13th 2026 & providers can continue to bill Medicaid & CHIP for youth already receiving gender-affirming care for up to 6 months after that. Josh Rovenger, GLAD Legal Director stated, “The federal government is putting up barriers between parents & their ability to make the best medical decisions for their children. That should be chilling to every American. With this rule, the Trump administration is once again holding vital health care funding hostage – pressuring states & providers to fall in line with its political agenda, not sound medicine. Families of transgender children want what every family wants: for their kids to be happy, healthy & able to get the care they need. Nothing in this rule changes the fact that transgender health care is established medicine, backed by decades of research & legal & protected in many states. Providers do not need to change how they deliver this care. States can & should step up to ensure funding & infrastructure keep it accessible. This rule is cruel, it’s wrong & it will not stand up to legal scrutiny.”

Ode To Legendary Vicki Wickham

I was sad to hear that Vicki Wickham the iconic English talent manager, entertainment producer & songwriter has passed. Wickham was a producer & writer of the groundbreaking British TV show Ready Steady Go! in the 60’s. She moved to NYC in 1970 where she became the manager of Patti LaBelle & the Blue Belles who Wickham rebranded in 1971 as Labelle. After Labelle broke up in 1976 Wickham managed the solo career of former trio member Nona Hendryx who also became her longtime partner. She also managed the Canadian new wave band Rough Trade & helped engineer a comeback for singer Dusty Springfield which is when I met & worked with Vicki. At the time I was developing “Legend To Legend” a TV series which I was pitching Springfield to host. Unfortunately we couldn't reach a contractual agreement as Springfield fought her substance demons but it was a privilege & quite a learning experience working with both Vicki & Dusty at the time. Wickham was given a Music Industry "Woman of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award" in 1999 & was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2013 Queen's Birthday Honors List for services to music. In her later years Wickham managed artists such as Morrissey, Marc Almond & Holly Johnson the former frontman for Frankie Goes to Hollywood. With journalist Penny Valentine Vicki also wrote an authorized biography of Dusty Springfield in “Dancing With Demons” published in 2000 a year after the singer’s death from cancer. That was the last time I spoke to her in a condolence chat about Dusty. Wickham is survived by Nona Hendryx her spouse of almost 60 years.

The Perfect Relationship In Bushwick

Adrian Crawford's new play The Perfect Relationship In Bushwick is having its World Premiere as part of the 2026 Broadway Bound Theatre Festival now through Sunday August 2nd at AMT Theater in NYC. Set in the heart of Bushwick the production is directed by Juan Ramirez, Jr. Crawford stated, “I am a proud lifelong Brooklynite, having been born, raised & continuously resided here for 47 years. Currently, I make my home in the vibrant community of East Flatbush. My family's roots in Brooklyn run deep; my father immigrated from Guyana, South America, in 1968, followed by my mother in 1971. This rich, multicultural heritage has significantly shaped my perspective & experiences. Setting The Perfect Relationship In Bushwick, in Bushwick allowed me to explore themes of identity, belonging & the complexities of human connection against a backdrop that is both rapidly gentrifying & deeply rooted as an area mostly consisted Latino residents back in 80’s & 90’s. I wanted to capture the pulse of a neighborhood that embodies so much of what Brooklyn represents – a place of dreams & challenges.” The play features Carli Mejia-Vasquez, Brian Uceta, Natalia Peguero, Rafa PĂ©rez, & Juan Pablo Toro & is about Carmelo & Elisendo who swear they’re just roommates despite living like a bickering married couple in a shabby sublet but when a trick they both slept with & their nosy landlord stir the pot the men’s denials fall apart revealing a tension neither has dared name & a bond more certain than the rent they can barely afford.
