Gay History Requirement in California

Finally in California public schools will be teaching gay
history to students if a bill passed by the State Senate
becomes law. A similar bill was approved by the Dem
controlled Legislature in 2006 but was vetoed by Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger. With Gov. Jerry Brown, who’s
supportive of gay civil rights the state will become the
first in the country to mandate that schools also teach
gay history. Students are required to learn about black
history & women’s history so the passage of this bill
could eliminate a degree of homophobia in the classroom.
This would mean that Harvey Milk, one of the first openly
gay elected officials in the state & Bayard Rustin, the civil
rights activist, will take a prominent place in the state’s
history books. Updates to Come…:)

Day of Silence for LGBTQ Teens

LGBTQ teen suicide & bullying are epidemic in America.
Day of Silence is coordinated nationally by GLSEN (the
Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network). This is a
day in which students from around the country take a
vow of silence to bring attention to homophobic, anti-
lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender name-calling,
bullying & harassment faced in schools by students,
teachers & other school staff. Over 500,000 students
from nearly 6,500 junior high & high schools in all 50
states & Puerto Rico have participated over the years.
LGBTQ teens are up to four times more likely to attempt
suicide than their heterosexual peers. Over past year,
numerous teens have taken their own lives after facing
bullying incidents. For More Info: glsen.org
According to statistics provided by GLSEN:
More than 85 percent of LGBTQ students have been
verbally harassed

Nearly 20 percent of LGBTQ students were physically
assaulted by their peers @ school...

Almost 40 percent of LGBTQ students reported that
faculty & staff never intervene when homophobic
language is used in their presence...

Nearly 30 percent of LGBTQ students reported missing
at least one entire school day because they felt unsafe

Anti-Gay Church Condemns Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin, who we interviewed last month at the
GLAAD MEDIA Awards is being condemned for his
sexuality in a series of homophobic slurs from clergy
in his native Puerto Rico. Cardinal Luis Aponte
defended the Catholic Church's homophobic stance
on homosexuality, saying that it “does not reject the
homosexual but their immoral actions & behaviors &
trying to promote homosexuality or sexual promiscuity
among our youth, indeed, is immoral regardless of
where it comes from.” This is always amusing coming
from the Catholic Church with their history of sexually
abusing minors. Updates to Come…:)

LGBT Performer Justin Bond Speaks to OUT

When I caught Kiki & Herb on Broadway a few years ago
we sat in the first row & saw the performance upfront
& personal. Justin Vivian Bond’s Kiki was flawless as
the aging cabaret diva that’s compelling, hilarious &
heart-wrenching all at the same time. Whether singing
about the ancient gender-variant priests, the Galli, as
Bond did in the 2010 show Re:Galli Blonde (A Sissy
Fix), or performing as Kiki DuRane with Kenny
Mellman’s Herb as the tragic, washed-up lounge act
Kiki & Herb, it's always a gender-transformance
journey at its best.
Bond’s Oscar-winning friend, Tilda Swinton stated,
“It suddenly occurred to me that not only Kiki but
also Justin are great mother figures to those that
know them: all-embracing, all-seeing, all-knowing,
unshakable, unconditionally present .... When I
introduced a longhaired, nail-varnished, impeccable,
treacle-voiced Justin, to my 4-year-old daughter
she asked me, ‘Is Justin a man or a lady?’
Before I could speak, she answered herself,
‘Oh, it doesn’t matter.’ ”

Kobe Bryant Fined $100K for Anti-Gay Slur

Exclusive Audio Chat with Malcolm Lazin
about Equality Forum 2011 the largest LGBT
Summit April 25th to May 1st in Philly
@ OUTTAKE VOICES™

After Kobe Bryant showed his true homophobic colors
by yelling the ultimate anti-gay slur at last night’s game
the NBA took action with pressure from GLAAD & HRC.
Kobe was fined $100, 000 & NBA Commissioner David
Stern stated, “Kobe & everyone associated with the NBA
know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not
acceptable & have no place in our game or society."
Recently, GLAAD worked with the New York Yankees &
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to address issues
of homophobia in sports. After working with GLAAD, the
New York Yankees adopted a new policy that strictly
prohibits anti-gay slurs in Yankee Stadium.

The New Gay Leaders: 40 Under 40

Exclusive Audio Chat with Malcolm Lazin
about Equality Forum 2011 the largest LGBT
Summit April 25th to May 1st in Philly
@ OUTTAKE VOICES™

The May issue of The Advocate is profiling 40 LGBT
leaders under 40 that are moving our LGBT civil
rights forward. Facebook cofounder Chris Hughes &
his fiancé, Sean Eldridge, Political Director of Freedom
to Marry, grace the cover. They’re young influential men
& women shaping the future of LGBT politics, arts &
entertainment. These entrepreneurs, activists, politicians,
artists & athletes are out, proud & changing the world.
Chris Hughes’s story, became the talk of Hollywood with
the release of The Social Network. While it was one of the
most critically praised films of 2010, Hughes confirms
that the film is primarily legend. He stated, “The point of
a movie is to entertain, so they can take a simple story line
& blow it up in a way that becomes a complete fiction,
which is what they did. I think the portrayals of the other
guys were far from rosy, so I count myself lucky.
I squeezed by.” For More Info: www.advocate.com
