Michael Feinstein & UK Friends

Michael Feinstein the five-time Grammy Award-nominated entertainer dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook” will be headlining the London Festival of Cabaret Monday November 4th at The Palace Theatre. This show was especially created for the London Festival of Cabaret bringing Michael & his band together with his very special guests Elaine Paige & Julian Ovenden for an evening of great music, lyrics & performance. Feinstein stated, “Though I have known Elaine socially we have never performed together. My desire to work with her is a dream realized, because her performances have always inspired me greatly by her raw talent, soaring voice & power onstage. I'll have to try to keep up with her! Julian is someone whose voice & talent I have admired from afar. I first heard a recording of him singing on a BBC 2 Tribute to Irving Berlin ten years ago. He sang How Deep Is The Ocean & I thought, 'what a nice baritone'. Then he kept going higher & higher until at the end he was hitting stratospheric notes, not for the sake of showing off but very organically to the song. I became an instant fan.” The London Festival Of Cabaret runs at cabaret venues & West End theatres throughout London & taking place now through November 17th. Crunch Time For ENDA

The ongoing saga to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is about to begin once again with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid moving it forward starting this upcoming week. It critical to tell your senators to pass ENDA now. The situation is horrendous with no state laws protecting gay, lesbian, or bisexual people from being fired or denied employment just because of who they are in 29 states & the same appalling situation exists in 33 states for transgender people. This fight has been going on for nearly 2 decades to pass ENDA & guarantee basic workplace protections for hardworking LGBT Americans. This could be an historic vote in the Senate. Allison Herwitt HRC Vice President of Government Affairs stated, “In my seven years leading HRC’s campaigns in Congress, I've witnessed the damage done by having two tiers of equality in this country – a patchwork of laws where some people have basic rights & protections & others do not. But ENDA is more than just a key protection for LGBT people. This is a fight to ensure that no American has to live in fear of losing a job because of who they are or who they love. We've made progress by passing many state & local laws over the years, but people living in the 33 states without full employment non-discrimination laws are still susceptible to the bigoted whims of whoever sits in the boss's chair. Anti Gay Conductor In London

The opening performance of Valery Gergiev’s new London Symphony Orchestra concert season at the Barbican in London last night was disrupted by gay activist Peter Tatchell who strode on to the stage dressed in a tuxedo making an official announcement of Gergiev’s anti gay position. Tatchell told the concert audience, “Valery Gergiev is a friend, ally & supporter of the Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin, whose regime is arresting peaceful protesters & opposition leaders. Gergiev defends the new homophobic law that persecutes gay Russians. He sided with Putin against Pussy Riot. I ask you to oppose tyranny & show your support for the Russian people.” Tatchell was manhandled off the stage by security staff & then voluntarily left the concert hall to some slow handclaps but mostly to applause. After exiting the concert hall Tatchell, Director of the human rights advocacy organization, the Peter Tatchell Foundation added, “Gergiev’s loyalty to Putin has been rewarded with personal honors & massive state grants for his pet projects. Gergiev is a great conductor but he colludes with a tyrant and shows little concern for freedom & equality. I may have annoyed some concert-goers but others seemed supportive. It was all over in two minutes. Gergiev’s performance was only briefly delayed. I never intended to disrupt the concert; only to make a short, symbolic statement.”

Red Sox & Gay Marriage Win

When you’re from or live in Boston there’s nothing quite like the emotional charge when the Red Sox win the World Series & the celebrations go on for months. The team this year was so filled with heart they just had to win. However there’s one issue that coincides with this & that’s gay marriage. In Missouri where the Saint Louis Cardinals are from there are no LGBT protections for gay & lesbian families. This is bad karma for winning pennants. When gay marriage passed in Massachusetts & gay & lesbian couples legally married in 2004 the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time since 1918 breaking the curse. Though gay marriage became legal in 2004 it spent the next 3 years working its way through state legislators who finally made it the law in Massachusetts in June of 2007. That year the Red Sox won the World Series again. Now in 2013 after the US Supreme Court ruled DOMA is unconstitutional & legally married couples can finally receive federal rights & protections for their families the Red Sox comeback from last place in 2012 to win the World Series once again. The only other thing missing is an openly gay player on the Red Sox. Maybe one exists or maybe not but you can’t help wonder with all their facial hair this year they look like a rowdy group of gay bears. Hopefully next year in major league baseball some brave player will come out & become a role model for our LGBT youth. But in the meantime…

A highlight of the trip will be the inaugural London Festival Of Cabaret that’s celebrating of The Great American & European Songbooks. The London Festival Of Cabaret runs at cabaret venues & West End theatres throughout London & taking place now through November 17th. Michael Feinstein will be headlining the festival on November 4th at The Palace Theatre where he will be performing his acclaimed show “Michael Feinstein & Friends” joined by special guests Elaine Paige & Julian Ovenden for an evening of great music, lyrics & performance. We promise to report all the gossip & dish. We also will be exploring all the best places to shop & enjoy smart cocktails. Nicole Conn Directs MEUSA PSA

Marriage Equality USA has become the executive producers of a music video PSA to be directed by legendary Writer/Director Nicole Conn whose groundbreaking lesbian movies include, Claire Of The Moon (1992), Elena Undone (2010) & A Perfect Ending (2012). Conn talked about this last month on OUTTAKE VOICES™ stating, “I’m preparing for Jen Foster’s video SHE which is one of the most beautiful song she has written. I’m a huge fan of hers anyways. We’re planning to make it really fun & also message that gay marriage is here to stay & its time has come.” SHE4MarriageEquality will launch a high-end video clip to the song SHE produced by LA based WingSpan Films. The song written & performed by Jen Foster will be rearranged into an orchestral dance mix by LA based music producer Eve Nelson & released in December. Brian Silva Executive Director Marriage Equality USA stated, "Music & video projects like this have the power to impact millions of viewers by showing the love & commitment that is celebrated & protected by passing civil marriage equality for LGBTQ families. We at MEUSA are thrilled to be a part of the SHE4MarriageEquality project!" Marriage Equality USA, Visit West Hollywood, WOLFE Video, Curve Magazine & Andaz West Hollywood have all signed on as official supporters of this project along with a fleet of volunteers from the LGBT community who have contributed in every aspect of this Music Video PSA.
