We went searching for an appropriate Memorial Day storyfor our LGBT community & our gay & lesbian brothers &
sisters who continue to serve our country under “Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell.” The only thing we could find was a statement
by the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) who
issued a statement calling for Congress to end efforts to
undermine the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) repeal.
NCJW is the only non-LGBT organization to take such a
firm stand with Congress over manipulation with the
already-signed law. We thank all those members of our
LGBT community who are presently serving, those who
have served, & their family members, friends & allies who
support them. (See Statement Below....)

In a great victory for human rights last December, Congress enacted the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010. We know that more than 14,500 service members have been fired under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell since 1993. We have no way of knowing how many gay and lesbian service members have died or suffered grievous injury protecting a country that refused to accord them equal rights under law. On this Memorial Day, we must ensure that their loyalty was not in vain.
Congressional opponents of repealing the discriminatory Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy have been exploiting the overly long implementation process spelled out in the repeal law. They have introduced half a dozen bills and amendments to bills that would hinder implementation. The latest of these came May 12 when the House Armed Services Committee added three harmful amendments to the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act aimed at delaying and derailing the elimination of the discriminatory Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy.
On Memorial Day, as we honor those who gave their lives in the service of our country, including the uncounted gay and lesbian service members, NCJW calls on the Senate to resist all efforts to delay or defeat the process of ending this injustice in the nation’s armed forces. All attempts to maintain discriminatory policies should cease if we are to honor our dead and the cause they served.
