How Democrats Address Gay Marriage

As expected the Democratic National Convention passed their LGBT inclusive platform. The platform endorsed marriage equality with a roster of speakers that includes 4 gay Congress members & a record number of 486 gay, lesbian, bisexual & transgender delegates from all 50 states. However as much as it’s moving to hear their support for our community it’s interesting how they chose to present it to America. The official phase is: “no matter who you choose to love.” When attending the 2004 DNC Convention here in Boston I attended all the LGBT events & found that the “g-word” (gay) was never used. Now it’s 8 years later & this is still the case. The only person who actually addressed the DNC & used the word gay was Colorado Congressman Jared Polis who stated, “My name is Jared Polis. My great-grandparents were immigrants. I am Jewish. I am gay. I am a father. I am a son. I am an entrepreneur. I am a congressman from Colorado. I am always an optimist. But first & foremost, I am an American….” Thursday Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin will be speaking at the DNC Convention. Baldwin is currently running in a tight race for the Senate in Wisconsin. Let’s see how she addresses the convention. As long as she doesn’t use the Karl Rove term ‘same-sex marriage’ we’ll be happy but our inclusion goes much further than marriage equality. Let’s hope someone addresses the Employment Nondiscrimination Act, (ENDA), especially when the economy is such a crucial issue. Updates To Come…:)

Gay Marriage Is An American Value

We all know how anti gay & homophobic the GOP Romney Ryan presidential ticket is. The question the Democrats need to ask them is why are they so threatened by LGBT equality? Since 2001 eleven countries have passed gay marriage including Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa & Sweden with the United Kingdom providing civil unions that grant all the federal rights & protections of marriage. These countries continue to grow & prosper without any repercussions. In this country we have Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Iowa, Vermont, New York, Washington DC, & Coquille, Suquamish all passing marriage equality & nothing negative has happened. Quite the contrary instead marriage equality has generated more revenue for these states. On average U.S. couples spend $28,800 for their wedding. This does not include the cost for a honeymoon, wedding rings, bridal consultants, wedding planners or accommodations for their families & friends. So how many millions of dollars would gay couples bring to our US economy in the name of love? It would be in the billions of dollars. Let’s hope that when the presidential debates come around next month Obama can confront Romney on why he is so fearful of our LGBT people. This is an important election for our community. Gay marriage is on the ballot in 4 states including Maine, Maryland, Minnesota & Washington. In Wisconsin openly gay Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin is campaigning to become senator. If she wins Baldwin will be the first LGBT member of the US Senate. So let’s see what happens when the Democratic Party supports marriage equality within their platform & how this affects the GOP hate mongers. Pro Gay Platform Is True Democracy

As Labor Day Weekend begins the Democrats prepare for their national convention on Tuesday. What a different convention it will be after the homophobic, anti gay, anti abortion platform the Republican Convention delivered in Tampa. Mitt Romney promises if elected president he’ll provide 12 million jobs. Of course our LGBT community will be excluded from his plan. The Republican Party has been blocking the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (EDNA) for years to ensure that LGBT people have no federal protection against workplace discrimination in hiring, training, assignment, evaluation, compensation, promotion, retirement, or dismissal. However over 96% of Fortune 500 firms already offer this protection because it’s a proven best practice in the business world, but Republicans continue blocking its passage. For a flip-flop minute in the beginning of Romney’s Presidential campaign he was actually in favor of workplace equality for our LGBT community but now that he has the nomination you’ll never hear anything pro gay from his lips. We know Romney very well in Massachusetts. He’s will say anything & do anything in order to get elected. When he was running in the 90's against Ted Kennedy for the US Senate seat, Romney declared to gay-only audiences that he would fight for 'gay rights' & be a stronger gay advocate for us than Kennedy. Yet a few years later, when Romney was Governor & eyeing the Presidency, he led the charge against allowing our LGBT community the same marriage rights as other citizens in Massachusetts in either marriage or civil unions. So enjoy the holiday weekend. Recharge next week watching the DNC National Convention but keep your eyes open. Remember the sentiment of Nobel winning writer Sinclair Lewis, who stated “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag & carrying the cross.” Updates to Come…:) OUTTAKE VOICES™ NOW ON HUFFINGTON POST...:) Hear Audio Interviews w/ LGBT Leaders @OUTTAKE VOICES™ SUPPORT OUR QUEST @ OUTTAKE™ EQUALITY STORE...:) View Our Historic Short Trailer on Gay Marriage

Celebrities Attending Gay Marriage Benefit

Confirmed to attend include Julianna Margulies & Josh Charles, co-stars of “The Good Wife” on CBS, “Sex in The City” Sarah Jessica Parker, Julianne Moore who played Sarah Palin in the HBO movie “Game Change”, Edward Norton, Susan Sarandon, along with Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley (D). Also attending are Sean Avery, Sandra Bernhard, the younger Barbara Bush, Paul Boskind, Andy Cohen, Tom Colicchio, Brian Ellner, Ryan Greenawalt, Cornelia Guest, Keith Lieberthal, Charles Myers, Shauna Robertson, Larry Poston, David Rabin, Hilary Rhoda, Johnny Swet, & Russell Simmons. The Sept. 13 event tickets range from $250 to $25,000 & is booked atop The James Hotel which promises a sexy social atmosphere, with an enclosed bar & lounge set against 360-degree views of the Manhattan skyline. The fundraiser for Marylanders for Marriage Equality comes as the issue appears on their November ballot. Gay marriage was passed by the Maryland legislature in March but the homophobes easily petitioned to the get it on the upcoming ballot. Several of the celebrities have Maryland connections, including Ken Mehlman, the former chairman of the National Republican Committee who came out as gay in 2010 & filmmaker John Waters a Baltimore native. Gay Republicans Attempt To Educate GOP

Hurricane Isaac is slowing down the Republican National Convention. Word is that they will officially open the convention & then call a recess delaying the speakers until tomorrow shortening many of the activities. Being from Massachusetts we hope that the country will soon wake-up to the false promises of Mitt Romney as we did. Especially the gay Republicans which still appears to the majority of our LGBT community as an oxymoron that we can not quite digest. According to the convention schedule of the Log Cabin Republicans today’s highlight is "Republicans Out to Win" with the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund with Out & Proud Republicans running for office at every level. They’ve scheduled a gathering at Oystercatchers at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, 2900 Bayport Drive with special guests former Congressman Jim Kolbe from 3P-5P. Log Cabin have scheduled other activities throughout the convention addressing our LGBT issues. More polls show that the majority of voters ages 18 to 29 are against the GOP stance on gay marriage & abortion rights. To add to that the GOP image only makes it harder for Republicans to gain credibility with many young Americans who hold an unfavorable opinion of the party. Peter Levine, director of the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement at Tufts University said, “Republicans should be worried about their long-term brand on these issues. The younger generation is the most diverse in American history & thinks of itself as very tolerant & pro-diversity. On top of that, you get the social issues, with the gay-related issues being the best example. It fits into a broader narrative that [Republicans] are basically the party of the older, white, straight people." So listen up Republicans. Either evolve on LGBT equality or be left behind.
