Burger King LGBT Proud Whopper

Burger King is offering a limited edition Proud Whopper Sandwich exclusively at its restaurant located at 1200 Market Street in San Francisco. The rainbow wrapped whopper is selling for $4.29 & all sales will be donated to the Burger King McLamore Foundation for scholarships benefiting LGBT college-bound, high school seniors graduating in spring 2015. They’ve even launched a YouTube promo that was created at a Burger King restaurant over the weekend in the heart of the San Francisco Pride Parade route where a limited edition Proud Whopper Sandwich was added to the menu. The written message inside the Proud Whopper Sandwich wrapper reads “we are all the same inside” which is part of their new “BE YOUR WAYSM” intended to create a global attitude of not telling anyone how they should live but rather elevate their slogan “HAVE IT YOUR WAY®” to an even more meaningful place. Kelly Gomez, Director of West Coast Field Marketing, BURGER KING® West Division stated, “We are always looking to engage our guests on a local level & be part of regionally relevant events. With one of our restaurants on the Pride Parade route, it was a natural fit to be involved & celebrate by giving something back to the community.” Unfortunately the limited edition Proud Whopper Sandwich is only available in San Francisco through July 3rd.

A rally takes place Saturday June 28th at noon at the Miami Beach LGBT Visitor Center at 1130 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, outdoors behind the building. The program will begin at 12:40P. Speakers will include Equality Florida, SAVE, ACLU of Florida, National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) & the LGBT Visitor Center all calling on the State of Florida to overturn the state’s ban on gay & lesbian marriage. Two plaintiff couples who are suing for the right to marry in Florida Juan del Hierro & Thomas Gantt & Karla Arguello & Cathy Pareto will also speak. With a whirlwind of favorable rulings throughout the country for marriage equality the rally will provide the community with an opportunity to hear about the status of some of the lawsuits presently in the Florida courts as well as how to get involved in the fight for equality. Nadine Smith Chief Executive Officer for Equality Florida Institute stated, “The majority of Floridians stand with us, as there is no reasonable argument for discrimination against our families. Throughout the nation, courts have ruled that these harmful laws are outdated & out of step, & we believe that equality & justice will prevail in Florida, as well.” More than 70 cases are currently pending in state & federal court in more than 30 states & U.S. territories & judges, appointed by Republicans & Democrats alike have issued 21 consecutive victories for marriage equality.

Rep Pocan On Gay Marriage Today

Congressman Mark Pocan (WI-02) is co-chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus & today on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s historic decisions in United States v. Windsor & Hollingsworth v. Perry which struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) & dismissed the California’s Prop 8 case on a lack of standing stated, “One year ago today, the Supreme Court came down on the side of equality, justice & love by striking down the Defense of Marriage Act & dismissing the Perry case. Today, thousands of loving gay & lesbian couples have their marriage recognized by the federal government & enjoy benefits afforded to them equally under the law. Since the Supreme Court struck down DOMA, thirteen out of thirteen federal court rulings striking down state marriage bans have cited the Windsor opinion & not a single ban on gay marriage has survived a federal court challenge. Yet until all 50 states in our union recognize all relationships equally & all citizens equally under the law, there will be too many people left behind merely for who they are & whom they love. I am now more confident than ever that full marriage equality is a question not of if, but when.”

Gay Marriage A Year After DOMA

This is the first anniversary of the demise of DOMA & Prop 8. Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on June 26, 2013 that found barring federal rights to legally married gay & lesbian couples unconstitutional it has been reported that almost 49% of gay & lesbian Americans live in states where they can legally marry. That’s almost half of our LGBT population & every day we seem to be gaining states. Just yesterday Indiana & then in Utah a federal judge overturned the ban appeals in those states & Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, Michigan, Ohio, Idaho, Pennsylvania & Wisconsin will most likely follow. Brian Silva, MEUSA Executive Director stated, "June is LGBTQ Pride Month, & last year at this exact time we celebrated twin victories at the U.S. Supreme Court. This year, as we mark that one year anniversary of the end of Proposition 8 & Section 3 of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, the 10th Circuit has completed a year of unbroken legal victories with a tremendous ruling in favor of love & marriage for all." We have a lot to celebrate on this one-year anniversary & if you haven’t seen HBO’s new documentary THE CASE AGAINST 8 that is currently on the cable network we suggest you do. In this exclusive sound byte we chatted with plaintiffs Kris Perry & Sandy Stier last weekend who talked about their experience being filmed for five years leading up to the Supreme Court decision that found Prop 8 unconstitutional & about what affect the experience had on their family:
