Panel Studies Jailed LGBT People

By Charlotte Robinson, May 06, 2014

On Wednesday May 7th the Center for American Progress & the Center for Gender & Sexuality Law at the Columbia University Law School will discuss the release of a joint federal policy road map examining the significant overrepresentation of lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender people & people living with HIV or PLWH in the country’s penal system. The discussion will focus on the often-overlooked experiences of the LGBT & PLWH communities & how justice continues to be elusive & conditional for these populations due to a range of unequal laws & policies that dehumanize, victimize & criminalize them because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status. The road map will make specific policy recommendations to address the myriad criminal justice issues affecting LGBT people & PLWH, including discriminatory profiling & policing practices, laws criminalizing HIV transmission & unsafe prison conditions. The road map was developed in collaboration with more than 50 advocates, lawyers & policy organizations working on LGBT criminalization & racial justice issues at the local, state, & federal levels & includes essays from academic experts in the field, advocates & formerly incarcerated LGBT people, including CeCe McDonald. Guest speaker will be Urvashi Vaid, Director, Engaging Tradition Project, Center for Gender & Sexuality Law, Columbia Law School. This is happening Wednesday May 7th from Noon to 1:30P at Center for American Progress, 1333 H St. NW, 10th Floor in Washington, D.C.

I'd pay attention to anything Urvashi had a hand in and this is a topic of little conversation in the public eye so thanks for bringing this issue to light.
