New LGBT Homeless Youth Report

Since our LGBT youth experience homelessness at a much higher rate than their heterosexual peers they also face significant challenges accessing food, shelter, health care, education & employment. In addition homeless youth often struggle to obtain state-issued photo identification, which further limits their access to programs & services that may aid them in securing safe & stable housing. The Center for American Progress has released a new report examining the challenges that LGBT homeless youth face in obtaining state-issued identification & systematically reviews the patchwork of state & municipal laws that either erect or remove barriers to ID access. Laura E. Durso, Director of CAP’s LGBT Research & Communications Project stated, “States have put up serious barriers to homeless youth obtaining ID cards & LGBT homeless youth face even greater challenges. Only 22 percent of states offer free or reduced-cost IDs to the homeless & nearly half require parental consent before issuing IDs to those underage. For the many LGBT homeless youth who leave home because they are not accepted by their families this makes obtaining ID particularly difficult. Transgender individuals often have to provide proof of surgery or an amended birth certificate to receive an ID. All this only raises the bar even higher for LGBT homeless youth to obtain the required ID to secure the employment, care, or shelter they so desperately need.” The report was authored by former CAP Research Associate Hannah Hussey & makes concrete recommendations for states to improve the ability of LGBT homeless youth to receive the identification documents they need.

LGBT History Month Icons (Video)

Equality Forum celebrating their 10th annual LGBT History Month has provided role models, teaches history, builds community to make an important civil rights statement about our LGBT community’s important contributions. Each day in October an Icon is featured with a video, bio, downloadable images & other educational resources. Pope Francis & Marriage Equality

Update: It's been reported that Pope  Francis met with Kim Davis in Washington last week & told her to stay strong. The quote below was made following their secret meeting....
We all knew that Pope Francis during his U.S. visit would make some statement that would be derogatory regarding religious freedom as a means to discriminate against our LGBT community. Well he didn’t disappoint. When reporter Terry Moran from ABC News asked “Do you support those individuals, including government officials, who say they cannot in good conscience … abide by some laws or discharge their duties as government officials, for example when issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples?” Pope Francis stated, “Yes, I can say that conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right. It is a right & if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right … Conscientious objection must enter into every juridical structure because it is a right, a human right. Otherwise we would end up in a situation where we select what is a right, saying, ‘this right that has merit, this one does not.'” Russell Roybal, Deputy Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force stated, “As a Catholic, it’s very disappointing that Pope Francis doesn’t seem to understand that politicians & government officials using religion as an excuse to impose their prejudices on the public is profoundly wrong. That’s why we separate church & state in the United States. World history is replete with examples of Catholics being discriminated against—such as in Northern Ireland where in the 1960s and 1970s Catholic families were routinely refused public housing by Protestant government officials. Discrimination was wrong then & it’s wrong today when imposed by politicians on LGBTQ gay & lesbian couples who have a legal right to be issued with a marriage license. Our faith should liberate—not discriminate. Religious liberty is a cherished right but government officials should not be allowed to cherry pick the laws they want to follow and the ones they want to ignore.”

Manhattan Digest Fundraiser Event

Manhattan Digest is having its 2nd fundraiser this coming Friday October 2nd at GYM SPORTSBAR one of New York’s top gay bars located in the heart of Chelsea. The event will take place from 7P to 9P & a portion of the proceeds will be going to support breast cancer research. Ryan Shea Editor-In-Chief of Manhattan Digest stated, “After having an absolutely amazing first fundraiser back in March, we at Manhattan Digest have decided to do a second one in hopes that this will be even more successful than the first. Similar to last time, it will be held in the basement area of the bar, where you can come & donate money to support breast cancer research in my late mother Lisa’s memory & bid on some incredible prizes that you yourself can actually win!” There will be a silent raffle where guests can bid on some fabulous prizes from LGBT run companies like Krave & Kulture, H Bake Shop, Best Barber in Hell's Kitchen & many more. Also on the amazing list are prizes from New York restaurant hotspots like Jacob's Pickles, Haru Sushi, Bay Kitchen Bar, The New York Beer Company as well as national brands like Crunch Gym & Amazon. Their goal is to raise $5,000 for cancer research. Raffle tickets are $5 for 2 tickets, $10 for 5 tickets & $20 for 10 tickets. GYM SPORTSBAR is located at 167 8th Ave between 18th & 19th St in NYC.

Lynch earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress & a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her role on Glee. Jane Lynch can currently be seen hosting NBC's Hollywood Game Night & starring as the lead in this fall's new CBS sitcom, “Angel From Hell”. Jane stated, "I do revel in performing live. I love the interaction with the audience. I love how they're like another component of the experience & you don't have that with television & film. The live stuff, it surprised me how much I missed it because I hadn't really missed it. When I did Annie, I had such a blast. Ann Hampton Callaway At Jazz Fest

Ann Hampton Callaway is kicking off The Berklee Bean Town Jazz Festival Friday September 25th at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston, Massachusetts. Callaway is one of the leading champions of the great American Songbook, having made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host & producer. On Broadway she took center stage in the Tony-nominated hit Broadway musical “Swing!” & we love her fabulously infectious theme song to the hit TV series “The Nanny”. Ann told us, "Tonight, Scullers will be alive with the hot jazz & standards as I sing Ellington, Kern, Coleman & spotlight three greats with centennials this year- Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra & Billy Strayhorn. LGBT Point Foundation Gala

Caitlyn Jenner will present the Point Horizon Award to two Point Alumni, Rhys Ernst & Zach Zyskowski on Saturday, October 3rd at the Point Foundation gala “Voices On Point” at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The Point Foundation is the nation’s largest provider of financial support, leadership training & mentoring to LGBTQ students of merit. The Point Horizon Award is given to young individuals who have taken a leadership role as advocates of the LGBTQ community. Ernst, an accomplished filmmaker & artist, is Co-Producer for Amazon’s “Transparent” & created the title sequence for the series. Zyskowski is noted for his work as a Producer on the ABC Family & Ryan Seacrest Productions docu-series “Becoming Us” & also a producer on CBS’ "Big Brother." Jorge Valencia, Point’s Executive Director & CEO stated, "Point’s mission is to provide LGBTQ young people with financial support & a mentor so that they can improve society. This year at Voices On Point we will honor two Point alumni who are doing just that.
