We may be close to have the first active openly gay athlete in North America's four traditional major sports leagues. The Detroit Pistons are exploring the possibility of signing free-agent center Jason Collins. Though sources told ESPN that no formal offer has been made Detroit has begun a dialogue with Collins. Jason has continued to work out in his hometown of Los Angeles in hopes of a firm contract offer. Back in late April after Collins came out in Sports Illustrated only six of fourteen teams surveyed that day told ESPN they expected to see Collins in the NBA this season. Collins stated in July, "I look at it, honestly, like any other free agency in the past several years, where I know I have to stay patient & I know that at this point in my career, you remain hopeful that there's a job & an opportunity waiting for you once teams start to fill out their rosters." In the midst the controversy with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi with Russia’s anti gay laws in place this would be a great step forward in USA major league sports to have an openly gay professional athlete as a role model for our LGBT youth.
