The staff and Board of Directors at GLAAD share the disappointment of both the thousands of couples who married this past year in California, as well as the many thousands more for whom that most fundamental right was eliminated. The NO on 8 campaign has asked us to share their below message with you.

Our media advocacy and anti-defamation work in California this past year provided important opportunities to advance the vital discussion on marriage equality. The visibility our movement achieved – from media images of joyful committed couples marrying, to the public discussion about what taking that right away would mean for all Californians – will open doors for us as we continue our work to change hearts and minds. Clearly, while our culture has changed, we have much more work ahead of us.

The elimination of the right for same-sex couples to marry in California is a setback. But we must not and will not give up in our pursuit of fair and equal treatment under the law. And this discouraging news out of California provides us with the need and the opportunity – as an organization, as a movement, and as a community – to renew our dedication and work harder than ever toward our goal of equality. With your support, visibility and involvement, our culture will continue to change and we will achieve full equality.
