Massachusetts Anti Bullying Act

Governor Deval Patrick signed An Act Relative to Bullying in Schools into law in a special ceremony at the State House Thursday. This legislation will continue to provide strong safeguards to improve school climates for LGBT youth & other vulnerable populations in Massachusetts. Kara Coredini MassEquality Executive Director stated, “These enhancements to the existing anti-bullying law will not only provide a safer school environment for all students, they will send a message. Acceptance & respect for all youth in our Commonwealth’s schools is paramount to ensuring a productive learning environment in which all students can thrive." Attorney General Martha Coakley added, “This new law is the next step on our path to protect children from bullying. It will better protect students who we know are most vulnerable to bullying, including our LGBTQ students & those with disabilities. It will also allow us to better track the effectiveness of our bullying programs across the Commonwealth. I applaud Governor Patrick for his commitment to combating bullying in our schools. And I also would like to thank Senate President Murray, Speaker DeLeo, co-sponsors Senator Chang-Diaz and Representative Peisch, and MassEquality & the Anti-Defamation League for their leadership on this important issue.” At least 15 other states have implemented anti bullying laws that have explicit protections for LGBT youth in schools, which are necessary to ensure that harassment of LGBT students is not overlooked or disregarded.

White House Easter Egg Roll

Melanie & Vanessa Alenier who are one of the plaintiff couples in the lawsuit for marriage equality in Florida will be attending the Annual White House Easter Egg Roll with their son along with other LGBT families. The event is hosted by the Obama’s & is being held on Monday April 21st. The event will feature live music, sports courts, cooking stations, storytelling & the traditional Easter egg rolling. In support of the First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative all of the day’s activities will encourage children to lead healthy & active lives. In January the Aleniers were one of six couples that joined Equality Florida Institute in filing a lawsuit aimed at allowing gay & lesbian couples to marry in Florida. At the press conference, Vanessa Alenier explained why the couple agreed to be plaintiffs stating, “Melanie & I have worked so hard to build & protect our family, but nothing can come close to matching the protections that marriage provides. Our family is in need of those protections just like other families. We want our son to understand that his family is secure & just as respected as any other family in our community here in Florida.” Nadine Smith, Executive Director of Equality Florida added, "We are proud of the Aleniers & their willingness to speak up for all of our families. We look forward to our day in court, confident that the law will rule on the side of equality and fairness. The majority of Floridians now stand with us. It is time for all families in our state to have full equality under the law.” You can follow the Easter Egg Roll on Twitter with #EasterEggRoll & watch the event live Monday on WhiteHouse.gov/live.

Boston LGBT Poetry Slam

There’s a night of spoken word LGBT poetry & open mic performance tonight April 17th at Club Café in Boston. Among those performing will be Sarah Pearlman reading from her book “The Lesbian Erotic: Bad Girl Persona & Other Poems” which is both a poetic memoir & travelogue, that is delightfully erotic & a humorous poetry collection that captures the sensuous detail the passion & exuberance of sex between women, the endurance of desire & the stunningly luminous landscape of Greece—suggestive of the beauty of a woman’s body. Pearlman stated, “I first began to write poetry during the summer of 1995. I had traveled to Chalki, a tiny island off the coast of Rhodes, to participate in a women’s travel group, assuming that there would be other gay women. However, it didn’t take long to discover that I was it—the only lesbian. It was bad enough being the one lesbian, but it became harder once the focus of the group turned to writing & performing erotic poetry. Feeling increasingly invisible by descriptions of heterosexual intercourse, an idea of a poem, Bad Girl Persona began to emerge— a poem about hot lesbian seduction & sex. No question that I wanted to proclaim the sex in sexual identity, to flaunt sex between women. No question I wanted to shock.” Club Café Boston is located at 209 Columbus Avenue in Boston MA. Refreshments will be at 6P & the show will begin at 6:30P The event is sponsored by Fenway Health.

Virginia Gay Marriage Appeal

In the legal challenge to Virginia’s ban on marriage for gay & lesbian couples the Plaintiffs & Appellees in Bostic v. Schaefer filed their appellate brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit on Friday. Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring also filed a brief on behalf of Defendant-Appellant Rainey. Read Brief… The American Foundation for Equal Rights is the sole sponsor of Bostic v. Schaefer. The Plaintiffs-Appellees are represented by the bi-partisan legal duo of Ted Olson & David Boies. Adam Umhoefer, Executive Director of AFER stated, “We look forward to presenting our case before the Fourth Circuit in May & representing thousands of gay & lesbian Virginians & their families. In the last five months, every federal judge to rule on the question of marriage for gay & lesbian Americans has decided in favor of equality, & we are confident the momentum will continue through this appeal at the Fourth Circuit.” The gay military organizations OutServe-Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) & the American Military Partner Association (AMPA) filed a friend of the court brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in the case of Bostic v. Schaefer, decided by a federal district court in Virginia, arguing that the uneven patchwork of states providing marriage equality harms military families, undermines national security, complicates the payment of earned veterans benefits & harms veterans. Updates to Come…:)

Utah Gay Marriage Appeal

The United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit heard oral argument in the Utah freedom to marry case, Kitchen v. Herbert, in Denver today. This was the first federal appellate court hearing in a freedom to marry case since the United States Supreme Court ruled in June 2013 that the federal government must recognize the marriages of gay & lesbian couples. The case was brought by Utah couples Derek Kitchen & Moudi Sbeity, Laurie Wood & Kody Partridge, & Karen Archer & Kate Call. On December 20th, 2013, U.S. District Court Judge Robert J. Shelby ruled that Utah’s laws denying gay & lesbian couples the freedom to marry violate the U.S. Constitution’s guarantees of equal protection & due process of law. More than 1,000 gay & lesbian couples married in Utah in the days following the ruling. Utah appealed the ruling to the Tenth Circuit. The couples are represented by the Salt Lake City law firm of Magleby & Greenwood, P.C. & by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR). Peggy Tomsic of Magleby & Greenwood presented oral argument on behalf of the plaintiff couples today. Tomsic stated, “We are grateful that the Tenth Circuit has moved quickly in handling this appeal, which affects thousands of families in Utah who seek equal dignity & full legal recognition of their families. We are confident that the judges will give this important case the consideration it deserves & we look forward to the court’s decision.” NCLR Executive Director Kate Kendell stated: “As a Utah native, today was a proud moment as Utah residents poignantly brought their families’ stories to a federal appeals court & made a basic request for equal treatment under our nation’s Constitution. We are optimistic the court will agree that excluding gay & lesbian couples from the right to marry causes harm & allowing couples to marry strengthens families & hurts no one.” Updates to Come...:)

Gay Ally Beyoncé Speaks OUT

Beyoncé graces the cover of the May issue of OUT Magazine. She talks about stunning the world in December when she quietly dropped her fifth album. With that surprise release Beyoncé & her company Parkwood Entertainment was able to do something that has become all-too rare for a global star; control the way in which her fans experienced her music. For its May cover story OUT was given unprecedented access to Parkwood Entertainment the inner sanctum of diverse & devoted team members at the heart of her brand. Beyoncé stated, “While I am definitely conscious of all the different types of people who listen to my music, I really set out to make the most personal, honest & best album I could make. I needed to free myself from the pressures & expectations of what I thought I should say or be & just speak from the heart. Being that I am a woman in a male-dominated society, the feminist mentality rang true to me & became a way to personalize that struggle…But what I’m really referring to, & hoping for, is human rights & equality, not just that between a woman & a man. So I’m very happy if my words can ever inspire or empower someone who considers themselves an oppressed minority…We are all the same & we all want the same things: the right to be happy, to be just who we want to be & to love who we want to love.” Read Full OUT Interview & Free Remixes…

Religious LGBT Discrimination Act

A homophobic anti gay bill has passed in Mississippi & Governor Phil Bryant says that he will sign this horrific legislation into law making it legal to discrimination against our LGBT community. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act passed 79-43 in the state’s House of Representatives & 37-14 in the Senate. The American Civil Liberties Union accused lawmakers of ignoring the public outcry against such horrendous bias. Jennifer Riley-Collins, Executive Director of the ACLU of Mississippi stated, "We remain hopeful that courts throughout the state will reject any attempts to use religion to justify discrimination. Nobody should be refused service because of who they are." Georgia, Idaho, Maine & Ohio, had rejected similar measures. In February Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed her state's version of the bill. Sarah Warbelow Human Rights Campaign (HRC) State Legislative Director stated, “While there were many efforts to correct the clearly problematic elements of this legislation, the bill still has the effect of making LGBT people strangers to the law. Before Mississippi has had the opportunity to robustly discuss the lived experiences of LGBT people, this bill would hollow out any non-discrimination protections at the local level or possible future statewide protections. Just as we’ve seen in other states, this bill is bad for business, bad for the state’s reputation & most of all, bad for Mississippians. Governor Bryant must veto the measure.” Will Mississippi become the Uganda of America? Updates To Come…
