San Francisco Ballet LGBTQ Nite Out

The San Francisco Ballet presents Nite Out on Friday May 4th inviting their biggest fans in our LGBTQ community to the arts event of the season, Unbound: A Festival of New Works. This will be their Unbound B Performance at the War Memorial Opera House 301 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco at 8P. Myles Thatcher’s narrative ballet is set to John Adams’ Absolute Jest that follows a protagonist in a rigidly divided society uncovering the beautifully complex individuality behind simplified labels. Cathy Marston takes inspiration from the doomed love triangle in Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome, telling a story of repression, love & desperation. David Dawson contrasts the diverse talents of SF Ballet’s dancers with “physically emotional virtuosity” & music by Ezio Bosso. Then after the performance from 10P to 12A dance with DJ Will Magid & San Francisco Ballet dancers, plus enjoy a complimentary signature cocktail, light bites & a cash bar in the Dress Circle hosted by dancer/choreographer Myles Thatcher & dancer Solomon Golding. Nite Out is sure to be a night to remember. Tickets are just $88. Myles Thatcher SF Ballet Dancer/choreographer stated, “Choreographing allows me to look at dance differently. I’ve learned a lot about the intention of movement. New material comes up all of the time in my dancing & gives me more substance & input to work when I’m choreographing. Finding balance between the two [dancer & choreographer] is difficult, but they balance each other.” The Nite Out media sponsor is QUEERTY.

LGBT Leaders Pompeo Concerns

LGBT leaders voice outrage towards the U.S. Senate for the dangerous confirmation of Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State by a vote of 57-42 despite his clear anti-LGBTQ record & professional ties to the Family Research Council, a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated anti-LGBT hate group. Vanita Gupta, President & CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights stated, “The Secretary of State is our nation’s top diplomat, who must represent all in America & promote human rights abroad. Mike Pompeo has yet to prove that he can fulfill that duty. Until now, Director Pompeo’s record shows that he does not equally value the rights of all, in particular LGBTQ people, women, Muslims & refugees. We urge Mr. Pompeo to recognize the enormity of his new role by valuing the rights of all - including members of the State Department’s diverse workforce. Most importantly, Congress must ensure that he stays true to the task.” Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD concluded, "Senators who cast their vote to confirm Mike Pompeo showed complete disregard for the global LGBTQ community by ignoring his ties to anti-LGBTQ hate & extremism, including his work promoting groups like the Family Research Council which supported Uganda's efforts to execute LGBTQ people. President Trump & his anti-LGBTQ cabinet continuously underestimate the resilience of the LGBTQ community who will stand strong in our fight for safety, equality & acceptance at home & abroad -- with or without the support of the U.S. State Department."

Win Against Conversion Therapy

The New Hampshire State Senate has passed HB 587 which is legislation protecting LGBTQ youth in the state from the dangerous & debunked practice of so-called “conversion therapy.” This was a joint effort between HRC, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Hampshire, the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) & GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) to help pass this measure. The bill now moves to conference committee before it can advance to Governor Chris Sununu’s desk for his signature. Xavier Persad HRC Legislative Counsel stated, “No child should be put through the dangerous & inhumane practice of conversion therapy. This abusive practice has no basis in science & is uniformly rejected by every major mental health organization in the country. It is time for New Hampshire to join the growing number of states enacting laws to protect LGBTQ youth from so-called conversion therapy. We urge state legislators to quickly send the bill to Governor Sununu’s desk.” New Hampshire will join Connecticut, California, Nevada, New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New York, New Mexico, Rhode Island & Washington who all have laws or regulations protecting youth from this abusive practice. Conversion Therapy is condemned by every major medical & mental health organization, including the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association & American Medical Association. According to a recent report by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, an estimated 20,000 LGBTQ minors in states without protections will be subjected to conversion therapy by a licensed healthcare professional if state officials fail to act.

Amber Rudd, UK Minister for Women & Equalities stated, “This Government is committed to improving LGBT equality around the world & commissioned this guide to drive positive action & enable countries to learn from each other. The publication shows there is no one way to achieve equality & highlights the steps taken by countries in all corners of the globe to protect & support LGBT people.” The guide provides an overview of why & how some countries have addressed discrimination, harassment & physical & psychological violence against people on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression & sex characteristics. It presents case studies from Belize, Botswana, Fiji, Jamaica, Malta & Pakistan, countries that have introduced measures to be more inclusive. Dr. Felicity Daly, author of the guide & Global Research Coordinator at OutRight Action International concluded, “We took a pragmatic approach by focusing on countries which have taken steps to safeguard sexual & gender minorities from harm & introduced measures to ensure equality. The guide provides practical examples & resources that policy officials & civil society can use in pursuing equality for all. Countries around the world considering how to overcome inequality can use these examples to inform and inspire solutions relevant to their national contexts.” Download Guide…

Student Global AIDS Action Week

Student Global AIDS Action Week runs April 9th to 13th. The National Alliance of State & Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) will join five days of grassroots action to show the U.S. government they will not stand by while it delays & deprioritizes fighting for people living with HIV & AIDS. The U.S. has been a leader in the response to the AIDS epidemic for the last 15 yeas & NASTAD demands that instead of backing away America must continue to lead the way to an AIDS-free generation. Because HIV exists at the intersection of public heath and social justice, NASTAD will join the Action Week to address five issues where progress is critical – from immigrant rights to ending poverty & tackling homophobia to achieve the goal of an AIDS-free generation. NASTAD is a leading nonpartisan, nonprofit association that represents public health officials who administer HIV & hepatitis programs in the U.S. & around the world. Their singular mission is to end the intersecting epidemics of HIV, viral hepatitis & related conditions. They do this work by strengthening domestic and global governmental public health through advocacy, capacity building & social justice. The Student Global AIDS Campaign (SGAC) is a US-based network of student & youth organizations, including HIV+ youth, committed to the global fight against AIDS. SGAC seeks to mobilize a diverse student movement, in partnership with students internationally, to make claims upon governments, corporations & civil society through informed political advocacy & direct action. SGAC demands sufficient resources, effective prevention & guaranteed access to AIDS treatment & care as a matter of moral urgency.

Transgender Victory In Alaska

Alaska rejected Proposition 1 which was a sweeping anti-transgender ballot measure aimed to overturn the trans-inclusive portions of Anchorage’s 2015 nondiscrimination ordinance & require trans people to use public restrooms that correspond to their original birth certificate. Rebecca Isaacs, Executive Director, Equality Federation stated, “This historic win for equality is a testament to the fair-minded majority of voters in Anchorage & the extraordinary voter turnout efforts by Fair Anchorage, Alaskans Together for Equality & the many volunteers on the ground. All Americans, including transgender people & their families, should have the opportunity to be themselves without fear of discrimination.” Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD concluded, “Anchorage’s transgender community worked tirelessly with the city’s faith & business leaders & local & national organizers, to build a powerful coalition of love & support & to combat the fear-mongering tactics of anti-LGBTQ activists to defeat this dangerous anti-trans ballot measure. Proposition 1 was exposed as a clear attack on transgender people & unequivocally rejected by voters who put their love of their neighbors & the safety of their entire community above hate.” This is the first time voters defeated a ballot measure that singles out transgender people for discrimination & sets a historic precedent as Massachusetts will face the first-ever statewide ballot initiative on transgender rights which will appear on the November 2018 ballot. There is also a looming anti-trans ballot measure in Montana where signatures are currently being collected to place the Initiative 183 on the state’s Election Day 2018 ballot.

Mike Pompeo Supports Hate Groups

Mike Pompeo’s anti-LGBTQ record goes far beyond his personal beliefs of opposing marriage equality & the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Pompeo has worked closely with the Family Research Council the anti-LGBTQ group which openly supported Uganda’s “Kill the Gays Bill” & defends the dangerous practice of conversions therapy & actively opposed overturning laws that criminalize homosexuality. Pompeo has earned Family Research Council’s endorsement & praise, appearing on their anti-LGBTQ radio program at least six times & personally consulting with their president Tony Perkins while serving the United States as CIA Director. The U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations must hold Pompeo accountable to his anti-LGBTQ record in his Secretary of State upcoming confirmation hearing. Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD stated, “During his time in the Trump Administration, Mike Pompeo has personally consulted with Family Research Council, an anti-LGBTQ hate group that supported Uganda's efforts to punish & execute LGBTQ people. The American people deserve answers about Pompeo’s ties to anti-LGBTQ extremism, which should have no place in the U.S. State Department. Unless Mike Pompeo can unequivocally state that LGBTQ rights are human rights, he is wholly unqualified to be the nation’s top diplomat.” GLAAD is asking the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations to take into full consideration of Mike Pompeo opposing position on LGBTQ equality, reproductive rights, Muslim & immigrant rights.

Media Visionaries At ClexaCon

Emmy Winning Broadcaster Charlotte Robinson will be appearing at ClexaCon the media & entertainment event for LGBTQ women & allies that takes place at the Tropicana in Las Vegas April 5th through April 9th. She will be joining author & graphic designer Robin Lowey & journalist Kathy Belge for their panel entitled “Game Changers: How These Outliers Affected Queer Culture” on Friday April 6th at 10A in the Marsha P. Johnson room at the Tropicana. "Game Changers" will address our community before Ellen, The L Word & Orange Is the New Black when lesbians were often at great risk in pursuit of community & culture. Many women lost their jobs, were thrown in jail & kicked out of families when their identities were revealed. Nevertheless they persisted. This is an opportunity to hear the stories of lesbians & lesbian culture that paved the way for where we are today. Robinson stated, “When I worked in media during the 1970’s & 1980’s you had to be in the closet or risk being fired on the spot. Most of my colleagues knew but if you were gay back then you had to play the straight game which was beyond stressful. So I played the game until I couldn’t do it anymore. I had to be my authentic self so I worked freelance until creating my own online news network.” In 2004 Charlotte produced & directed the acclaimed short film OUTTAKE™ addressing gay marriage that was instrumental in passing marriage equality that morphed into an online news network that broadcasts to an audience of over a million people globally. Other media visionaries scheduled to appear at ClexaCon are Christin Baker & Bridget McManus from tello Films, filmmaker Marina Rice Bader, actress Marlene Forte & Publicist Mona Elyafi to name a few.
