Homophobic Nigeria Passes Anti-Gay Bill

Stay away from Nigeria. The Nigerian senate has passed a bill banning gay marriages defying a threat from the UK to withhold aid from nations violating gay rights. The bill by Africa's most populous nation calls for a 14-year sentence for anyone convicted of homosexuality. Anyone who aids or "abets" same-gender unions faces 10 years in prison, a rule that could target rights groups. It goes to the nation's House of Representatives for a vote before President Goodluck Jonathan can sign it into law. The bill passed Tuesday even though British Prime Minister David Cameron threatened to withhold aid from nations violating gays rights, sparking outrage in Africa where leaders interpreted it as "colonial" display of power. Homosexuality is illegal in most African countries based on dated sodomy laws introduced during the British colonial era. You think this couldn’t happen in America? Elect one of these homophobic candidates running for President & see….Updates to Come…

Congressman Frank Will Not Run in 2012

Watching Congressman Barney Frank’s press conference announcing he will not run for Congress in 2012 is a real shocker & blow for our LGBT community. The 16 term Congressman has been such a fierce advocate for equality & with Rep Tammy Baldwin running for Senate that leaves us with just 2 openly gay Reps in D.C. Frank’s decision came with the redistricting in Massachusetts that would add 325,000 new constituents to his district. He believes that he would not be able to follow through with new business since he had planned to retire in 2014. When asked what his plans were he stated that he wished to write, possibly finish his Harvard degree & spend more quality time with his partner Jim. Congressman Barney Frank joins 14 other Dems that are not seeking reelection in 2012. Check OUT our interview with Barney taped earlier this month…..Updates to Come…..:)

A Very Gay Thanksgiving Message

This Thanksgiving when we sit down for dinner we’ll have a whole long list of things to be thankful for. For friends & family, food & community. Especially for our openly gay & lesbian sons & daughters home safe from war today & for the hope of world peace someday. For the privilege of being part of a great nation conceived in liberty & dedicated to the proposition that all are created equal. And for the hope that someday soon this will include giving thanks for full equality for our LGBT community. Let’s work harder & see if we can get those evasive 1,138 federally protected rights for our families next year & take another step closer to actually being a nation where liberty & justice for all really means all.
We Wish Our LGBT Community & Their Families a Fabulous &
Safe Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend....:)

Major League Baseball Comes Out

Major League Baseball made a homerun for our LGBT community yesterday by taking a major step to help any closeted gay player come out if he chooses while still active on the field. MLB announced that its new Collective Bargaining Agreement will prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The National Football League made the same change in September. After the NFL added sexual orientation to its nondiscrimination policy, Rafael McDonnell of Resource Center Dallas wrote a letter to MLB Commissioner Bud Selig calling for pro baseball to follow suit, reports the Dallas Voice. McDonnell received responses from both Selig and MLB Executive Vice President Robert Manfred Jr. "While it is my policy not to comment on matters currently on the table, I think it is safe to say the issue you have raised will be addressed in a positive way," Manfred wrote to McDonnell, the Voice reports. As you know several MLB teams released an "It Gets Better" video after the San Francisco Giants were the first including the Boston Red Sox.

Gay & Lesbian Military File DOMA Challenge

The Defense of Marriage Act must go. It hurts our LGBT community by denying 1,138 federal rights & benefits to our legally married families. In the military though the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was major DOMA harms our brave gay & lesbian service members. SLDN (Servicemembers Legal Defense Network) has filed a motion for summary judgment in the case McLaughlin v. U.S. This is the legal challenge filed in October by SLDN & co-counsel Chadbourne & Parke on behalf of current & former service members seeking equal benefits & family support for equal sacrifice & service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The plaintiffs are all legally married & want the armed services to recognize their families. They seek the same family support & benefits for their same-gender spouses that the services & Department of Veterans Affairs provide to heterosexual spouses. The case was filed in Massachusetts & challenges the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), as well as provisions in Title 10, Title 32 & Title 38 of U.S. Code, which preclude the military from providing gay married couples with the same benefits & family support as their straight, married peers. Updates to Come…:)

Boston LGBT Film Fest Presents PARIAH

Today Nov 20th at 6P at the ICA in Boston..:)
PARIAH is one of the best films I’ve seen this year. It’s an amazing coming out film that addresses how an Afro American family deals with their daughter’s sexual orientation. With such homophobia within the black community this is a film that all audiences should not miss. Its World Premiere was at Sundance in 2011 & Spike Lee is one of the film’s executive producers. PARIAH is disturbed by Focus Features & will be in theaters December 28th. The Boston LGBT Film Festival invites you & a guest to a special screening of PARIAH this Sunday, Nov 20th at 6P at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, MA. This special screening is by invitation only with a limited number of movie passes available so please register now. Director Dee Rees & Star, Adepero Oduye will host a Q&A session following the screening.

Prop 8 Drags On In California

The California Supreme Court has once again dodged the bullet by granting the homophobes an opportunity to appeal last year’s decision that found Prop 8 totally unconstitutional. So now the case returns to Ninth Circuit Federal Court of Appeals for a ruling on Prop 8. As you know last year after over 2 weeks of trial the federal district court found that Prop. 8’s exclusion of committed gay couples from marriage violated the fundamental fairness & equality guarantees of our Constitution. We hope that the Ninth Circuit will uphold that decision or conclude that under federal law marriage equality opponents cannot continue to litigate the case.
