LGBT Visibility on 2010-11 TV Season

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)
released the 15th annual "Where We Are On TV" study a
comprehensive review of scripted LGBT primetime characters
in the 2010-2011 television season. After more than doubling
last year, the overall number of lesbian, gay, bisexual &
transgender (LGBT) characters on broadcast networks
continues a steady rise, though broadcast networks still report
no transgender or black LGBT characters. The report shows
that 23 LGBT characters will account for 3.9% of scripted series
regulars in the 2010-2011 broadcast television schedule, up
from 1.1% in 2007, 2.6% in 2008, and 3% in 2009. The number
of scripted LGBT series regulars found on mainstream cable
networks has rebounded after a two year decline from 40 in
2007, 32 in 2008, 25 in 2009, to 35 in the upcoming season.

DADT Ceasefire Until Repeal?

Exclusive Audio Interview with Malcolm Lazin the
Founder & Executive Director of Equality Forum on

“GLBT History Month”
@ OUTTAKE VOICES™

There should be a ceasefire on LGBT servicemembers under
“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” until this unconstitutional legislation
is repealed. Senator John McCain led a successful filibuster
of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) & the repeal
of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) refused
to compromise with Senate Republicans by holding a full & open
debate on the National Defense Authorization Act. Rather than
reaching a compromise allowing for 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' to be
repealed, the Senate has postponed action until after the election.

Lady Gaga DADT Maine Rally

Senate Republicans Block "Don't Ask Don't Tell" Vote
Read More...
UPDATE: Watch Rally Video & Read More....
Lady Gaga took four U.S. service members discharged from the
military because of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” as her escorts to the
MTV Music Video Awards last week. Monday the Pop Star
headlined a rally in Portland, Maine calling on the state's two
Republican senators to vote yes on taking up a defense bill that
includes authorization to repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't
Tell" policy toward gay & lesbian servicemembers.
A crucial Senate vote is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon &
supporters of the repeal say that as of now, they do not have the
60 votes needed to overcome a GOP filibuster blocking the bill.
Maine Republicans Senators Susan Collins & Olympia Snowe are
publicly undecided & could each potentially provide Democrats the
votes they need to bring the issue before the Senate. On Sept. 8th,
U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips in California ruled DADT
unconstitutional but we still haven’t heard a peep from the Obama
administration whether they will repeal this historic ruling.

Congresswoman Reboots LGBT Health Care

Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) introduced legislation aimed
at improving the health care system for lesbian, gay, bisexual, &
transgender Americans. The Health Data Collection Improvement
Act (H.R. 6109) will allow the Department of Health & Human
Services (HHS) to collect voluntary data on sexual orientation &
gender identity in programs & surveys supported by the Department.
Baldwin’s legislation requires the Secretary of HHS to develop
standards for the development of questions & the appropriate &
confidential collection of information on sexual orientation & gender
identity. It also directs that this information be analyzed to assess
disparities in health status & access to healthcare. Ultimately, H.R.
6109 will allow health researchers, LGBT community organizations
& government agencies to better assess the health & wellness issues
affecting the LGBT community & individuals. In addition, it will
allow both private & public funds to better target evidence-driven
LGBT health programs. Updates to Come…:)

Fed Court Rules "DADT" Unconstitutional

Obama still silent on Fed Judge Ruling....
“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” the US military's ban on openly gay
servicemembers has been found unconstitutional in US District
Court. Judge Virginia A. Phillips handed down her decision saying
that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" violates gay, lesbian & bisexual
servicemembers First Amendment rights. Judge Phillips also
stated the policy banning openly gay & bisexual servicemembers
did not preserve military readiness. She cited evidence that the
policy has instead had a "direct & deleterious effect" on the military.
The lawsuit against "Don't Ask Don't Tell" was brought by the Log
Cabin Republicans back in 2004. This decision comes a month after
the verdict in San Francisco that rejected the ban on same-gender
marriages as a violation of the US Constitution. This is a major
victory for our LGBT community. Read Decision Updates to Come….:)

How To Pass Gay Marriage

First, understand that words are important. The term “same-sex marriage” is totally wrong. This term was created by the religious right to raise red flags to the moral majority and it is working effectively against the LGBT community. Listen to the media talk about “same-sex marriage” and all you hear is sex, sex, sex. Stop using this term today. Instead use “same-gender marriage”, “gay marriage”, or “marriage equality.” Secondly, learn from states that have passed gay marriage. Go to the Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) website and ask questions. Also go to Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus (MGLPC) and learn how to keep gay marriage off the ballot in your state. These are the architects of gay marriage in this country and they have answers. Thirdly, we must be patient but that does not mean we cannot voice our disappointment and concerns. Every federal court has ruled in our favor. This is because discrimination is wrong and it is wrong to vote away the rights of a minority. It took 15 years for Massachusetts to pass gay marriage. To learn more how Massachusetts succeeded listen to Arline Isaacson, Co-Chair of MGLPC, talk about it in this exclusive audio interview: “America's Road to Gay Marriage” @ OUTTAKE VOICES™ Hear Audio Interviews w/ LGBT Leaders @OUTTAKE VOICES™
