Openly Gay Kate McKinnon Joins SNL

Saturday Night Live lost its edge years ago. It’s just not that funny. Every once in a while there's a controversial guest host that makes us tune-in to be disappointed once again. This being an election year maybe there’s hope for some excellent political satire like when Tina Fey & Amy Poehler delivered their impeccable Sarah Palin & Hillary Clinton in 2008. The good news is that Kate McKinnon is joining the cast becoming the first openly gay female cast member in the show's long history. (The late Danitra Vance was cast in 1985 who was gay but not out.) Kate McKinnon appeared on Logo's "The Big Gay Sketch Show" produced by Rosie O'Donnell. Deadline.com sources say she could make her first appearance as early as this Saturday night in an episode hosted by "Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara. McKinnon, a trouper in the New York based Upright Citizens Brigade comedy team has also been in several one-woman shows including the hilarious "Disenchanted," a satirical look at popular fairy tale characters years past their prime. Terry Sweeney was the first gay man to appear on SNL as a cast member during the 1985 season 10 years after the show's premiere on NBC. So we’ll tune in again to see how the writers utilize McKinnon’s sexual orientation & hopefully we'll be amused & inspired. No matter what, more LGBT visibility on network television is extremely important for our community.

Chaz Bono Addresses Boston LGBT Event

Chaz Bono was the Key Note Speaker at the Boston Spirit Magazine Fifth Annual LGBT Executive Networking Night. The event was attended by over 1,000 local LGBT corporate professionals at the Boston Marriott Copley Place, making it the largest LGBT business event in New England. Bono shared his transition experience saying he never identified with the gender into which he was born. “It’s always been a constant my whole life. It was there as early as I have memory, that I felt like a boy,” Chaz said. It wasn’t until 2001 that he began to realize he didn’t have a strong female identity & in order to feel comfortable in his own skin he needed to make transition from female to male. “It’s so uncomfortable to walk through life when inside you feel like one way & the entire world around you is seeing you as something else,” he added. The movie BOYS DON’T CRY was where he first saw someone born female identifying as a male & he decided to make the transition. The decision to become a male was immediate but because of his very public life, from being the child of Sonny & Cher, he still wrestled with the actual action of taking hormone supplements & undergoing multiple surgeries. Chaz said, “There’s no worse feeling than knowing what to do & being too afraid of what other people would think to do it. I got to a place where I had a moment of clarity, of understanding, that what you thought of me ultimately didn’t matter.” Chaz concluded his speech by saying the most important thing is to be true to yourself. Bono is a fierce LGBT Activist & feels it is his calling to be a role model for our transgender community especially after his brave appearance on DANCING WITH THE STARS last season. Chaz has written 3 books, including “Transition,” released in 2011, which details his 40-year gender identity struggle. He also shared his life in the Emmy nominated documentary “Becoming Chaz” & serves on the Board of GLAAD. Check OUT our Red Carpet coverage of the 2012 GLAAD Media Awards in NYC....

DWTS Offs Gay Icon Martina Navratilova

Well I guess there’s no reason to watch season 14 of DANCING WITH THE STARS as Martina Navratilova has been the first celebrity to be eliminated. She was a little stiff in her dance routines but our LGBT community should have rallied around her & voted for her. She does however look fabulous from her grueling dance workouts. "I felt better this morning than last night & I felt better as the day went on. I thought we had a shot at it with the popular vote, but I guess we were too far behind... I don't know. I thought we had a shot at it." Martina stated adding, "I'm devastated for Tony because he put in so much hard work. He hasn't had great partners in the past. He wanted an athlete, he got an athlete, but an athlete blew it yesterday. We couldn't make up with the popular vote for the judging yesterday." It seems Tony Dovolani felt the same for not being able to give a shining moment for Martina, saying, "I wanted America to get to know Martina. I'm just devastated that I couldn't do that for her." For his efforts Martina plans to give back to the dancer by giving "him some tennis lessons." Declaring he's up for the offer, Tony responded by saying, "I'll go anywhere she goes!"

Gay Marriage Remains In New Hampshire

This is great news coming out of New Hampshire. The New Hampshire House has refused to overturn marriage equality by a vote of 211-116. The anti gay attempt by homophobic Rep. David Bates to turn back the clock on the 2010 gay marriage law in the granite state was soundly rejected. "New Hampshire lived up to the state motto of 'Live Free or Die' today, by ensuring the freedom to marry for all loving, committed couples," said Stuart Gaffney, Marriage Equality USA Media Director. "Happily married couples shouldn't be used as a political football in an election year. Wednesday's vote in New Hampshire says loud & clear, that the freedom to marry is here to stay," said John Lewis, Marriage Equality USA Legal Director. "Our leaders always face a decision regarding which side of history they want to stand on whenever civil rights are debated. New Hampshire legislators made a clear decision today to stand on the right side of history," concluded Gaffney. Updates to Come…:)

Navratilova Displays Her Feminine Side

Martina Navratilova graced the premiere of Dancing With The Stars appearing absolutely stunning in a sexy black shear dress & heels. She’s been having fun with the press saying she’s “not that feminine” but that was far from reality as she performed a sexy Fox Trot with her partner Dovolani. “The last time I wore a dress was 1990, but I might be wrong. The first day here, I put on the little black dress & I went, ‘look at my legs!’ I didn’t know those legs were there. So I felt sexy right away. And, this is more feminine, but not sexy. We’ll do the sexy later. When the dance calls for it, you’ll see more skin.” she told reporters. Dovolani helped Navratilova tap her feminine side by designing her elegant, cut-out dress. “The good thing about Martina is she’s embracing everything. I saw Martina transform in front of my eyes right from the word go. When she first walked into the studio, I was like, oh, this is really foreign for her. Then to see her blossom in front of me & to embrace the entire transformation into the dress, the hair, & the makeup & then the dance, to really be a soft, beautiful dancer, for me, it was quite rewarding. This is what I love doing.” Unfortunately the duo came in last with a score of 20 for their Fox Trot. Hopefully our LGBT community called in & voted to keep our Legendary Gay Icon dancing for more episodes. Anti Gay Marriage Vote In New Hampshire

UPDATE: NEW HAMPSHIRE GAY MARRIAGE REPEAL VOTE THIS WEEK...
There’s this totally homophobic state rep in New Hampshire trying to repeal the 2010 gay marriage law in the granite state. Rep. David Bates is sponsoring a bill, expected to be voted on today, that would put gay marriage on the November ballot in New Hampshire. If this happens, again we’re in a position where the majority would vote on the rights of a minority. You would think that New Hampshire would learn from the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit finding California’s Prop 8 unconstitutional. This legislation would become a lawsuit waiting to happen. This time with Prop 8 being found unconstitutional we can’t imagine wasting taxpayers money on creating a no-win situation but stranger things have happened on our road to marriage equality. We’re also dealing with a Republican-controlled State House who wants to remove gay marriage & instead reinstate a 2007 second-class civil unions law. The good thing about this backward maneuver is that New Hampshire Democratic Governor John Lynch has vowed to veto any measure to deny gay couples equal rights. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. David Bates has also tried to create structure by amending his bill to allow some 1,900 existing same-gender couples with marriage licenses to retain their married status. Sound Familiar? Wake-up New Hampshire & when you do go to the polls regardless whether or not this anti gay marriage bill is there, definitely vote to remove your homophobic state reps from office. Remember your state’s motto; “LIVE FREE OR DIE”…

Fred Karger Beats Ron Paul in Puerto Rico

It appears that openly gay GOP Presidential candidate Fred Karger beat Congressman Ron Paul by 250 votes in Sunday’s Puerto Rican primary with 82% of the precincts reported in. This is the first time that Karger has beaten one of his 4 top-tier rivals in the 3 primaries that he has competed in. Karger stated, “We spent the past 6 days campaigning hard in Puerto Rico & it worked. Ron Paul has been in all 20 debates, raised $35 million & has 80% name identification & it looks like we beat him with our message of jobs now, moderation and inclusion. We met with Republican leaders, students, the LGBT Community & lots of voters over the last 6 days & we ran our Spanish-language commercial, “Hola Puerto Rico” on television leading up to Sunday’s primary. On Saturday we even went all over San Juan in a traditional campaign Sound Truck with a group of volunteers. We met lots of voters & gave away lots of Fred Frisbees. This week we hit the ground running. Today, it’s back home to California (June 5th Primary), Las Vegas (Republican Jewish Coalition Meeting), New York (Media Interviews) & Maryland (April 3rd Primary). We definitely have some Big Mo = Momentum, going into the remaining state primaries.” Updates to Come…:)

Ben & Jerry UK Gay Marriage Ice Cream

Since 2005 gay couples can have civil partnerships in the UK which provide the same national rights & protections as marriage but fall short of the term “marriage”. Last September the British Government announced its intention to introduce same-gender civil marriage by the next general election & of course the religious anti gay homophobes are up in arms against marriage equality. Sound familiar? Now American ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's in support of gay marriage in Britain has relabeled an apple pie flavor as Apple-y Ever After which displays a gay marriage on its label. When Vermont passed gay marriage 2 years ago the ice cream company celebrated by briefly repackaging its Chubby Hubby flavor Hubby Hubby. Unfortunately the new favor is only available in the UK. Ben & Jerry spokeswoman Liz Stewart stated “The point is to raise awareness around same-gender marriage issues. We've been an activist brand really since our inception in 1978. We've stuck up for social justice issues in the past & it's something we'll continue to do going forward. People at Ben & Jerry's believe love is love. Marriage, should just be defined by love & commitment.” It seems that the change won't affect ice cream pints sold in stores but the label at the company's scoop shops will be changed according to Stewart. Just think how fabulous it would be if other companies worldwide would take a positive stand like this. Updates to Come…:)

Boston Pride Backs St. Pat’s Peace Parade

Every St. Patrick's Day in Boston is bittersweet since Boston's St. Patrick's Day parade was canceled in 1994 because it would not allow our LGBT community to participate. The state's highest court ruled that the parade organizers could not ban LGBTQ Irish-Americans from marching but in a counter lawsuit, parade officials won, accusing LGBTQ Irish-Americans of violating their rights to free speech under the First Amendment. It’s pretty much the same scene in NYC. You would think with gay marriage passing in both of these states this homophobia wouldn’t still be going on, but it is. Unfortunately most cities & states are not gay friendly on St Patrick’s Day. However, Boston Pride is supporting this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Peace Parade which will be held on Sunday, March 18th. The St. Patrick’s Day Peace Parade is organized by the Smedley D. Butler Brigade, a Boston-area chapter of Veterans for Peace & focuses on peace, equality, jobs, social & economic justice issues. “We are proud to be supporting the Smedley D. Butler Brigade Veterans for Peace in their effort to highlight important social & economic justice issues,” said Linda DeMarco, President of Boston Pride. “As one of New England’s largest Pride organizations, we understand better than most why it is important to be as inclusive of as many voices & viewpoints as possible during times of celebration.” The St. Patrick’s Day Peace Parade will begin at 2P at the corner of D Street & West Broadway in South Boston & will conclude at the Andrews T Station.
