Lesbians Address Internal Clash

Boston OLOC (Old Lesbians Organizing For Change) will meet on Sunday May 1st from 2P to 4P with four insightful presentations addressing “Warring Lesbians”. Although there was an initial semblance of unity in the early Lesbian-Feminist movement by the late 70s differences soon emerged including the issues of class. Extremely divisive were political positions on lesbian separatism as well as butch/femme identities, transgender inclusion, pornography & S/M sexuality are sometime referred to as the lesbian sex wars. The following OLOC presentations on “Warring Lesbians” will address these polarizing issues. Guest speakers will include, Jyl Lynn Felman on “Butch/Femme: Past & Present”, Cynthia Bauman with “Lessons from the Feminist Wars”, Sue Katz will address “Class Conflict: A Working Class Perspective” & Sarah Pearlman concludes with “Deciphering the Sex/Gender Wars of the 70s & 80s”. Alice Fisher, Founding Member of OLOC-Boston stated, “For our last OLOC meeting until Fall come learn or remember the days of the lesbian wars. Were you a separatist, androgynous or simply baffled by all the tumultuous events? When you think of those days do you still hold the same ideas sacred? This will give us the space to re-think those days”. OLOC Boston events are open to all lesbians, including transgender lesbians, who want to attend a group for old lesbians & to create a community of older lesbians. The event takes place at Brookline Senior Center, 93 Winchester Street in Brookline, MA. Following the event there will be an early dinner at Sichuan Garden, 295 Washington Street in Brookline Village, Brookline.

The Untamed Stage Musical

In the shocking Thrillpeddlers & Cockettes’ tradition “The Untamed Stage” a Weimar Berlin-inspired musical production by Scrumbly Koldewyn is being presented at The Hypnodrome in San Francisco as a two-act music theatre piece now through May 28th on Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays at 8P. Scrumbly Koldewyn stated, “Hearing Ute Lempur’s album, Berlin Cabaret for the first time in 1998, inspired me to put on an evening of the music (the first edition of “The Untamed Stage”) & to do some extensive digging for more Weimar period popular songs in Germany. As much ahead of the rest of the world as Berlin’s wild free-wheeling night life was, the songs, many by Hollaender (“Falling In Love Again”) & Spoliansky, the Cole Porter and NoĂ«l Coward of Germany, are amazingly skilled and extensively numerous. Unfortunately, for this 2016 production, obtaining the performing rights are very complicated, so I decided to create new material “in the style of” the 20s Berlin songs. Not to compete with Kander and Ebb’s “Cabaret”, I chose to carry the irony & the explicitness a step or two further. However themes remain the same; man-devouring vamps, the blending of gender, biting social commentary, etc. Songs will be sung by performers with that certain Berliner attitude – “We are who we are”. Dr. Mel Gordon’s pictorial book, Voluptuous Panic, further inspired Thrillpeddlers & myself to put together a show that reflects the relevance of Weimar Berlin to present-day San Francisco, where the denizens might be too intent on being entertained & distracted to take note of a rising tide of hatred & fear in the rest of the country.”

Mississippi Legalizing Hate

The National LGBTQ Task Force has joined hundreds of organizations, companies & media calling on Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi to resign. One week ago the governor signed HB 1523 into law that legalizes discrimination against our LGBTQ community. This new law may also lead to discrimination against unmarried people raising children, unmarried people having sex & others. Rea Carey, National LGBTQ Task Force, Executive Director stated, “Mississippi has once again passed a law that unduly infringes on basic human rights. What Governor Bryant did was immoral. That's why he must resign immediately. By signing this law, he is targeting some of the poorest people with the least legal protections in our nation, Mississippi's LGBTQ community. Bryant manipulated faith & cherished constitutional rights to justify this reprehensible action. Make no mistake: this law was knowingly designed to have the biggest negative impact on the most vulnerable. Contrary to what the Governor has said, this law makes a mockery of the basic American idea that we are guaranteed freedom of religion & freedom from religion. We believe that what he did makes his position untenable." Mississippi has the highest proportion of gay & lesbian couples raising children in our nation at 26%. It has one of the highest percentages of Black gay & lesbian couples. Mississippi has the highest number of poor people in the country — many of whom are LGBTQ. "These folks already face devastating discrimination and racism. With this law they are going to face more. This is what makes Bryant's action so despicable," Carey added. The state's new law discriminates against LGBTQ people & many others in a number of different contexts. These include: the workplace, at schools, in health care settings & in public spaces such as stores, hotels or eateries by giving individuals, religious associations & private entities the right to use their religious beliefs as an excuse to "shut the door" on anyone they choose.

Tax Guide For LGBT Taxpayers

As the deadline approaches early next week for federal & state taxes the National LGBTQ Task Force has launched a groundbreaking income tax preparation guide entitled “Queer Our Taxes” for lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender people. The new taxpayer resource is intended to guide LGBTQ people with questions they might want to ask when sitting in front of their tax preparer or program. The first-of-its-kind guide translates complicated income tax form information in a way that is more understandable and accessible for LGBTQ people. Meghan Maury, Criminal and Economic Justice Director, National LGBTQ Task Force stated, “LGBTQ people are disproportionally more likely to live at or below the poverty line—they are also often the most in need of income tax information & least able to access it. The straight-forward information in this guide will empower LGBTQ people to get credits & deductions that lift millions of people out of poverty. Most LGBTQ people don’t know that you can deduct out of pocket costs for transition-related care including surgery. Many of us also don’t know that you may be able to claim a large credit for adoption related expenses.” The new publication is part of the organization’s “Queer Our Taxes” effort, a public education & advocacy campaign focused on securing economic justice for LGBTQ people.
