Northeast Embraces Wrath of Sandy

We’re getting ready to embrace Hurricane Sandy today here in Boston. All LGBT issues are on hold until we know how this huge storm will affect us. Governor Deval Patrick has declared a state of emergency & is asking people to stay in or at least off the roads all day. Boston public schools are closed for everyone but nonessential employees & many workplaces are also closed. The National Weather Service predicts a very windy day with high’s in the 60’s. Gusts could reach up to 50 mph. In the afternoon, gusts are predicted to pick up reaching up to 70 mph with a 100 percent chance of rain. The evening will continue to be heavily windy & rainy. Unlike NYC which shutdown their subway yesterday you can use the T. The MBTA has cancelled their ferries services but the subway, bus, commuter rail & RIDE will operate on a normal schedule this morning. We went out yesterday & picked up supplies. You could see the tension of storm in everyone’s face though there was an attitude of "love thy neighbor" which should last the length of the storm. The local media is asking that you should help your community by reporting downed branches, power outages & more. Keep your love ones & smart phones close as we all embrace this storm. We’ll have updates as long as we have power. Updates to Come…:)

LGBT & Allies To Help Obama Win

If you live in the Boston area & are concerned about the recent presidential polls there is something that you can do to turn this around. New Hampshire is a swing state & the race there is neck & neck. We can't afford to let Romney win NH. Today Sunday October 28th our LGBT community & allies are driving to New Hampshire to volunteer for Obama. We'll work in groups knocking on doors of likely Obama supporters. Training will be provided when we arrive in NH. Arline Isaacson Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Gay & Lesbian Political Caucus stated, “If Romney wins, the LGBT community will have a committed opponent of equality in the White House. Gains we've won over the last few years would be erased or diluted. We can't afford to let that happen. Romney would appoint conservative anti-choice & anti-gay Supreme Court justices who would roll back the clock on LGBT rights and on Roe v Wade. Romney would oppose the repeal of DOMA in Congress & defend DOMA before the Supreme Court. Programs for our youth, our seniors & AIDS/HIV would be slashed or eliminated. Moves to garner benefits for LGBT service men & women in the military would end precipitously. Federal legislation to bring LGBTs closer to full equality would be stopped dead in its tracks. There are only 10 days before the election on Nov 6. Republicans are working hard to suppress the vote - telling people for example to vote on the wrong day! We can't let those dirty tricks foil the results of this election. Please join me & others friends of the LGBT community for this very important outing.”

Obama Backs Gay Marriage On Ballots

Finally Obama threw in his support for gay marriage ballot measures in Maine, Maryland & Washington State. Since he came out for marriage equality in May he had not offered specific endorsements of the three measures until Thursday. In each case the endorsements came from his administration. In Washington State the statement was received from Paul Bell, Washington Press Secretary, Obama for America, "While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the president believes in treating everyone fairly & equally, with dignity & respect. Washington’s same-sex marriage law would treat all Washington couples equally & that is why the President supports a vote to approve Referendum 74." At least something came out of the White House in support of these crucial ballot measures. We just wish he would evolve enough not to use the Karl Rove term "same-sex marriage". Tonight we’ll be attending the Gay, Lesbian, Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) 13th annual Spirit of Justice Award Dinner. The sold-out event will be honoring Reverend Irene Monroe with the 2012 Spirit of Justice Award. Reverend Monroe is a nationally renowned African American lesbian activist, scholar & public theologian. The Spirit of Justice Award recognizes individuals whose work & achievements reflect a profound dedication to our LGBT ideal of a just society. GLAD is the architect of gay marriage in this country & responsible for passing marriage equality in Massachusetts in 2004. One of the 2012 LGBT History Month Icons, Attorney Mary Bonauto will be on hand so we'll hopefully have a firsthand update on Maine & GLAD’s historic DOMA case that is likely headed to the US Supreme Court in 2013.

Gay Ally Pink Speaks OUT

Pink is gracing the November cover of The Advocate. She’s definitely on our “let’s be friends & more” list. Diane Anderson-Minshall Executive Editor for the mag interviewed Pink about staying true to her roots, her undefined sexuality & of course the love between Pink & her devout LGBT fans, especially the lesbian & bisexual women who have always been there for her. Pink stated, “They’ve been the most loyal part of what I do. They’ve been my most loyal friends, to be honest. I’ve had a lot of my gay boys around, but my gay girls are my rootstalk. They’re my honesty in an ocean of bullshit. I should be gay by the way that I look & the way that I am. I just happen to not be. But it just makes perfect & complete sense.” She says that Gay people do constitute her core fan base, appearing at every show. Pink added, “But then over the years you kind of bring in new people that have never really embraced gay culture & it’s just this clusterfuck of people. There are adorable little gay girl couples & gay boys & then there’s the older straight couple together who enjoy the music & learn a bit of tolerance while they’re at it. I just feel like it’s bringing people together & it’s rad.”

Gay Ally & Activist Pauley Perrette

We watch NCIS to see Pauley Perrette with her Goth punk clothes & Bettie Page hair. She still looks a bit like the New York club scene bartender she once was minus the white Mohawk that first attracted TV producers & modeling agents in the ’90s. Today as Abby Sciuto, the forensic wunderkind with a heart of gold on CBS’s number 1 drama, NCIS, Perrette is one of television’s most popular actresses. She’s also a fierce gay ally & one of the most active celebrities in support of HIV causes. She graces the cover of the November-December Issue of HIV Plus Magazine where she talks about why activism is important, the role the church should play in HIV outreach & what it was like to portray an HIV-positive woman on the silver screen. When asked why using her celebrity to further causes, especially HIV & AIDS awareness is important to her, Perrette stated, “I have a lot of experiences that really shaped that. I remember once when I first moved to New York City when I was like 21.This was before the drug cocktail & the environment around HIV had not even evolved to where it is now. But it was Christmas Eve & I was alone in New York & I didn’t have any money at all, I was always broke & alone. So I went down to 14th Street & bought a little bag of Christmas tree balls and took them over to St. Vincent’s Hospital & went up to the HIV ward. I just went in & gave them each a little Christmas ball. What struck me the most was that everyone in there was alone & that really broke my heart.”

LGBT Issues Closeted in Debates

The presidential debates have ended without addressing any LGBT issues. The only mention was “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” by Obama in the first debate when listing his accomplishments during his first term. This really isn’t surprising with the extreme anti gay platform the GOP conceived for their convention but it’s a bit odd since the Dems convention had a strong LGBT presence. The Advocate even weighed in this stating, “With four debates & hours worth of questions & answers, the words "gay" or "lesbian" never broke through.” We all find this a bit disturbing but do we want to give Romney a chance to express how homophobic he is? If elected Romney wants to reinstate “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”,  he wants a federal constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality & though a year ago he told the Nashua Telegraph, “I favor gay rights,” & said he doesn’t “believe in discriminating in employment or opportunity for gay individuals…” he’s never brought the subject up again. Mitt Romney will say anything & do anything to get elected. He is not for the good of anyone except for himself. He’s just another power-hungry man that if elected he will make this country sadly unrecognizable. We have seen his ambition shatter LGBT programs in Massachusetts once he became governor. All he wants is power for power sake. Let’s hope that the independent voters who are undecided wake up & vote for Obama before it’s too late. Updated to Come…:)

DOMA Ruled Unconstitutional Again

Now in New York the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has found that Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violates the equal protection component of the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution, making it the second federal appeals court to find DOMA unconstitutional. The United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit made a similar ruling in May of this year in Boston. Enacted by Congress in 1996, DOMA nullifies the marriages of gay & lesbian couples for all purposes of federal law. Adam Umhoefer, Executive Director of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) stated, “Today’s decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit continues the unceasing momentum toward marriage equality for all Americans & affirms that discrimination against gay & lesbian Americans is unfair, unjust & unconstitutional. The body of evidence in support of marriage equality is clear and convincing. This decision, as well previous decisions in other DOMA cases & in our federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8, signals that the arguments opposing the recognition of marriage for gay & lesbian Americans have no legal basis. With today’s ruling, we are one step closer to the day when marriage equality is a reality for every American.” In the meantime our LGBT community continues to be treated as second-class citizens. Spirit Day Oct 19th Wear Purple

In 2010 teenager Brittany McMillan called on her friends to wear purple as a way to memorialize those who lost their lives to bullying. With the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) help, Spirit Day has since gained widespread support from celebrities, TV news & entertainment programs, corporations, organizations, schools, local communities & even national landmarks. Spirit Day coincides with GLSEN’s Ally Week, as well as National Bullying Prevention Month. This year gay teen Katy Butler has called on for President Obama & Governor Romney to wear purple on Friday. Earlier this year, Katy launched a Change.org petition to call on the MPAA to change the rating of the documentary BULLY. After the last presidential debates with Obama & Romney in each others’ face it would be refreshing to see them wear purple in support of Spirit Day. This year among the celebrities participating in Spirit Day are: Louis Van Amstel, Bryan Batt, Chaz Bono, Brandy, Bailey Buntain, Keenan Cahill, Kristin Cavallari, Margaret Cho, Andy Cohen, the cast of Days of Our Lives, the cast of Degrassi, Fran Drescher, Carmen Electra, Ray Ford, Fun., Stephen Fry, Renee Graziano, Kathy Griffin, Paris Hilton, Perez Hilton, Cheyenne Jackson, Peter Marc Jacobson, Avan Jogia, Kaya Jones, Keahu Kahuaui, Jennifer Knapp, Kara Laricks, Judith Light, Mario Lopez, Marlee Matlin, Lucia Mendez, Dean McDermott, Joel McHale, Maria Menounous, Justin Mikita, Cesar Milan, D.W. Gay Marriage Absent From Debates

Mostly likely we’re not going to hear anything about marriage equality from Obama or Romney before the upcoming election. Fortunately we have an army of gay activists out there fighting for LGBT equality in the four states where gay marriage is appearing on the November ballot. In Maine gay marriage activists Luke Montgomery & Eduardo Cisneros arrived in their 2010 Love Bug VW entirely covered with Legalize Love bumper stickers to bring attention to the gay marriage ballot states Maine, Maryland & Washington where marriage equality could pass & in Minnesota where we must keep a constitutional ban on gay marriage from becoming a reality in that state. “We gave the President a bullhorn because we need him to speak out on these votes. These are blue states that are voting for Obama & we believe that the President’s own words will help make sure that the Obama’s support for equal marriage is heard loud & clear so they also vote for marriage equality.” said Eduardo Cisneros with LegalizeLove.com. Luke Montgomery added, “Obama has been an amazing game-changer on this issue & we’re campaigning our hearts out for him because we believe that the President is the secret weapon to move & inspire voters. For us this isn’t politics, it’s personal. We want the right to get married like anybody else. We hope people join us the journey & follow along at LegalizeLove.com.”

LGBT Celebrities For Obama (Video)

We have a new five-minute video with LGBT celebrities talking about how much Obama has accomplished for our community to get the vote out. The video features Jane Lynch, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Billie Jean King, George Takai, Wanda Sykes, Zachary Quinto & Chaz Bono all talking about casting their vote for Obama. The LGBT celebrities talk about their coming out process & of course highlight what Obama has accomplished for our community. Tennis legend Billie Jean King says the president has pushed change & progress for LGBT people faster than any president in the nation’s history, which is very true. King adds, “You always have to protect change.” All of the celebrities say, “Come out & vote for Barack Obama” & Obama is included talking about civil rights, repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” & marriage equality in the 5-minute spot. We just wish they were hip enough not to use the Karl Rovian term same-sex marriage that has kept our community from achieving marriage equality by inciting red flags for the religious right homophobes. This video does have the ring of preaching to the choir but I guess it is what it is. If you’re LGBT the only choice you have is to vote for Obama since the GOP anti gay homophobic duo of Mitt Romney & Paul Ryan will do anything they can to put us all back in the closet.

US Deports Gay Domestic Partner

Even though the Obama Administration issued written guidance to immigration officials regarding gay couples on Oct 5th we have a new disturbing story coming in from Los Angeles. Mark Smalley & his registered domestic partner of over 2 years Cameron Gray who are both influential members of the gay community in Los Angeles were recently separated from each other when Cameron re-entered the United States last Monday Oct. 8th after visiting his family in Australia. Cameron was immediately locked up & treated like a criminal by US Immigration for over 10 hours after arriving in the US from his 16 hour flight from Australia. The officers said that he had "... too many entries on your tourist waiver, which tells me that you're not just a tourist... You're planning on staying here permanently, aren't you?" After his 10 hour detainment & thoroughly explaining his situation he was then escorted by security to the gate of a departing flight where he was immediately deported back to Australia. This was simply due to the fact that Immigration officials chose to ignore how to handle Cameron's "unfamiliar" situation referring to his status as the registered domestic partner of a California state citizen & also an immigrant. This would never happen with a heterosexual couple. Cameron was initially invited to work here in the United States over 12 years ago & did so legally on a visa up until recently he was laid off during the recession. However during this time he fell in love with & committed himself to Mark. Unlike a heterosexual couple Mark's US citizenship could not & still can not help Cameron get a legal visa denying them the equal opportunity to spend of the rest of their lives together as a heterosexual couple could. The only other option would be that Cameron would have to leave the country every 90 days on tourist waiver simply because gay immigration spouses cannot apply for those spousal visas. All of the above will appear in Ryan James Yezak's upcoming documentary entitled,"Second Class Citizens", an all-encompassing look at discrimination based on sexual orientation here in the United States. Updates to Come…:)
