Celebrate Life Lessons From Legends

Richard Skipper the fabulous entertainer, host, producer, writer & live entertainment historian will bring his show “Richard Skipper Celebrates! Life Lessons From Legends” to Feinstein’s At The Nikko in San Francisco on Friday October 30th at 8P. The Halloween Eve engagement is part of Skipper’s 2026 Autumn Tour following a sold-out NYC performance at The Laurie Beechman Theatre. Joining him in San Francisco will be special guest Matthew Martin as Judy Garland with Tom Shaw on piano. At a time when so much of our entertainment is experienced through a screen Skipper is bringing people together in a room & making them part of the evening. Life Lessons From Legends combines music, storytelling, conversation & audience participation in a show that changes every time Richard steps onstage. Before the show begins the audience is invited to submit questions that are selected at random throughout the evening opening the door to stories, songs, memories, laughter & moments that even he cannot predict. Skipper stated, “This is not a show you simply sit back and watch. The audience helps create the evening. I know where we are beginning, but once those questions start coming out, none of us knows exactly where we are going. That is part of the fun.” Audiences have responded to that connection describing the experience simply as a warm hug of a show while others have evoked the great days of television talk & variety programs like the days of Merv Griffin or Mike Douglas. For Richard those reactions get to the heart of what the show is about creating a room where people feel welcomed, included & part of something that is happening only once.

New Documentary “Uncle Roy” (AUDIO)

I talked with filmmaker Keri Pickett about “Uncle Roy” the fabulous new documentary she directed chronicling 9 decades of Roy Blakey’s personal & professional archives. Growing up Keri hardly knew her enigmatic uncle until she followed him to NYC to pursue photography where an unexpected friendship took shape. As their lives intertwined she discovered his groundbreaking legacy of celebrity & gay photos. When Roy’s health declined Keri cared for him while preserving the stories he kept so carefully guarded. “Uncle Roy” follows the extraordinary life of globe-traveling-skater turned photographer Roy Blakey born in Oklahoma in 1930 dreaming of performing on ice. This love of figure skating led Roy to a career in theatrical skating, performing globally with Holiday on Ice. He then began collecting figure skating programs & photographs, a collection that expanded over his lifetime to 44,000 items including posters, costumes & more. After his professional skating career Blakey became a photographer in NYC capturing iconic figures including LGBTQ icons while his work in male nudes pushed boundaries in art & publishing. Roy’s book “HE” (1972) is considered a forefather of gay photography with his portraits of a generation largely lost to AIDS. “Uncle Roy” is currently playing the film festival circuit with upcoming screening including Reel Q the Pittsburgh LGBT Film Festival on October 9th, NewFest: 38th Annual New York LGBTQ Film Festival on October 18th, QDoc October 24th in Portland, OR, SCAD Savannah Film Festival October 30th & Indie Memphis Film Festival on November 8th. I talked to Keri about what she hopes to accomplish with her documentary & her spin on surviving these challenging times. LISTEN

Monet Event At Gibbes Museum Of Art

The Gibbes Museum in Charleston, SC is presenting a rare showing of 3 Monet paintings on loan from the Gregg Turk Foundation through October 25th offering visitors the rare opportunity to experience these extraordinary landscapes by Claude Monet (1840–1926) the pioneering French artist celebrated as a founder of the Impressionist movement. Dr. Alex Rich, President & CEO of the Gibbes Museum stated, “We are thrilled to showcase these rarely seen works by Claude Monet at the Gibbes Museum of Art. The response has been outstanding from art lovers in our community & from the many visitors to Charleston. Impression, Monet: Loans from the Gregg Turk Foundation at the Gibbes Museum of Art presents the brilliance of Claude Monet within our galleries for the first time. The exhibition examines not merely Monet’s art historical legacy (100 years after his death), but also his resounding impact on art. A century after his passing, Monet continues to inspire audiences as the world’s most celebrated Impressionist painter.” When the painting was publicly exhibited in 1874 critic Louis Leroy seized upon its title in a satirical review & derisively referred to the participating artists as "Impressionists." The artists soon embraced the name “Impressionists” themselves & a term originally intended as criticism came to identify one of the most consequential movements in modern art. Since 1858 The Gibbes Museum of Art has been a beacon in the American South for arts & culture. The Museum’s mission is to enhance lives through art by engaging people of every background & experience with art & artists of enduring quality, providing opportunities to learn, discover, enjoy & be inspired by the creative process.

America 25 Years After 9/11 (VIDEO)

America continues to provide a roller coaster ride for its citizens & beyond since the attacks on September 11th 2001. As we commemorate the milestone 25th anniversary of 9/11 everyone who remembers that day has a story to tell. Where they were when it happened as our entire country went into shock. For the weeks to follow we were united in our grief. As celebrations are planned & taking place across the nation we are reminded to honor the diversity of people & communities affected by the attacks including those in our LGBTQ community. Tom Ryan was a retired New York City firefighter who upon hearing of the attacks on World Trade Center called his firehouse & rushed to the scene. At the time Tom was the only openly gay firefighter in the FDNY. Father Mychal Judge was the gay Catholic priest who was killed by debris from the collapsing World Trade Center as he was caring for victims. Father Judge, 68, was a chaplain at the New York Fire Department & was known in the New York LGBTQ community for his work with AIDS outreach. Tom Ryan was a pallbearer at his funeral at St. Francis of Assisi Church where he resided brought over 2,000 people. In the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan next door to the now closed St. Vincent’s hospital our LGBTQ Community Center offered immediate assistance to survivors & later counseling services for those grieving. In 2002 I produced & directed this music video tribute dedicated to those who perished on September 11th 2001. Michael Feinstein performs Leonard Bernstein & Stephen Sondheim's "Somewhere" from "West Side Story" with Keith Lockhart & the Boston Pops. 25 Years Later... Let's Take a Moment to Reflect....
