About Me

Shame On You North Carolina

It’s wrong for the majority to vote on the rights of a minority. North Carolina has adopted Amendment One, a state constitutional amendment that prohibits marriage equality & any form of legal relationship recognition for gay & lesbian North Carolinians. Why does this state fear LGBT people so much that they had to amend their constitution to prevent our community from rights & protections for our families? The homophobic state of North Carolina already denies gay & lesbian couples the fundamental freedom to marry, Amendment One now writes a ban into the state’s constitution. This amendment goes beyond restricting marriage equality & poses a serious threat to the well-being of families, children, women & seniors in North Carolina. Adam Umhoefer, American Foundation for Equal Rights Executive Director stated, “The passage of Amendment One is a profound injustice. Singling out a class of citizens for discriminatory treatment is unfair, unlawful & violates basic American values. Gay & lesbian Americans, like their fellow citizens, want nothing more than to marry the person they love. Committed, loving couples & their families should not be denied this most fundamental freedom.” Updates to Come...

Joe Biden Comes Out For Gay Marriage

AUDIO: New Exclusive conclusion of our audio montages with 5 filmmakers about their films scheduled this week at the Boston LGBT Film Festival that runs through May 13th. We also had the opportunity to talk to the filmmakers about crucial issues facing our LGBT community @ OUTTAKE VOICES™
While President Obama continues to evolve about marriage equality Vice President Joe Biden told NBC's David Gregory on "Meet the Press" that he's "absolutely comfortable" with gay marriage. Biden was calm & collective as he explained to Gregory that marriage should be about being loyal to someone you love, whether that marriage is between 2 women or 2 men or a man & a woman, "I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women & heterosexual men & women marrying one another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties." Chad Griffin, a member of the Obama campaign's national finance committee & about to head HRC stated, "I'm grateful that the vice president of the United States is now publicly supporting marriage equality & I hope very soon the president & the rest of our leaders, Republicans & Democrats in Congress, will fall in line.” Biden was very moving on the issue talking about the love he had seen in the eyes of a couple of kids he met for their 2 dads. David Axelrod, a senior adviser to the Obama campaign, wrote on Twitter that Biden & Obama share the view that all married couples should have the same legal rights. So this is all good. I just wish that the media would stop using the offensive term “same-sex marriage” to describe marriage equality. Updates to Come…:)

Gay Marriage Gains National Endorsements

Well it’s finally getting closer to the Democratic Party officially endorsing gay marriage as part of the 2012 Democratic platform. On Thursday chairs from 11 states have come out in favor of marriage equality. Calling for the inclusion on the Dems ticket are John Burton of California, Joan Wagnon of Kansas, John Walsh of Massachusetts, Ken Martin of Minnesota, Jon Wisniewski of New Jersey, Jay Jacobs of New York, Meredith Wood Smith of Oregon, Boyd Richie of Texas, Jake Perkinson of Vermont, Dwight Pelz of Washington & Mike Tate of Wisconsin. Joining them is the Democratic National Convention chair Antonio Villaraigosa, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren & nearly 2 dozen U.S. senators. New York Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs said, "Nearly a year ago, New Yorkers stood united in supporting full marriage equality for all loving & committed families & Democrats led the way. We now see first-hand how marriage improves the lives of gay couples & their families, & strengthens businesses & communities throughout the Empire State. Marriage equality is simply the right thing to do & that's why I strongly believe that the Democratic Party should stand united for a freedom to marry plank in our national Democratic Party platform." As Massachusetts gets ready to celebrate the 8th anniversary of gay marriage on May 17th we wish to send a clear message to President Obama. It’s time to evolve & support marriage equality. Boehner Is Hurting Military Families

As the unconstitutionality of DOMA drags on in court the gay & lesbian org SLDN (Servicemembers Legal Defense Network) fired back at Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) & his Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG) for their request to intervene in McLaughlin v. U.S. This is the landmark federal court case filed in October 2011 by 8 legally married gay & lesbian service members & veterans, who are represented by SLDN & Chadbourne & Parke. The case is another challenge to the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) & 3 other federal statutes; Titles 10, 32 & 38, that preclude the military from providing equal recognition, support & benefits for all military families. The Department of Justice announced its intention related to the case in a letter sent to Boehner on February 17, 2012, triggering the BLAG to make known its position. "Speaker Boehner's request to defend this case in the wake of the ongoing harm done to military families by these discriminatory laws is reprehensible & callous. The Speaker has turned a deaf ear to the urgent pleas of CW2 Charlie Morgan & countless families like hers, who are living with the day-to-day realities of a military that has been forced to create two classes of service members," said Army veteran & SLDN Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis. Russian Police Enforce Anti Gay Law

The first day of May & Russian police have arrested 17 gay rights activists at a May Day rally in St Petersburg. Members of an LGBT rights group were detained while trying to unroll rainbow flags at a rally. Police said they were to be charged with failing to co-operate with officers. "The first activists who unfurled their flags were detained. Some tried to raise posters, they were also detained," said Yury Gavrikov, a local gay rights leader. "Two police officers would grab each person, with no warning." As you know in March, St Petersburg became the 4th city in Russia to adopt a vaguely phrased law banning "homosexual propaganda" among minors. Activists believe it is a means of cracking down on gay rights. Last week, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia's 3rd largest city adopted a similar law. Politicians have proposed passing it at a federal level. It seems more than 30,000 people took part in the city's May Day celebrations, officials said. The rally was led by the ruling United Russia party but also included representatives of the Communist party & nationalist groups. Updates to Come….
