Shame On You North Carolina

By Charlotte Robinson, May 09, 2012
It’s wrong for the majority to vote on the rights of a minority. North Carolina has adopted Amendment One, a state constitutional amendment that prohibits marriage equality & any form of legal relationship recognition for gay & lesbian North Carolinians. Why does this state fear LGBT people so much that they had to amend their constitution to prevent our community from rights & protections for our families? The homophobic state of North Carolina already denies gay & lesbian couples the fundamental freedom to marry, Amendment One now writes a ban into the state’s constitution. This amendment goes beyond restricting marriage equality & poses a serious threat to the well-being of families, children, women & seniors in North Carolina. Adam Umhoefer, American Foundation for Equal Rights Executive Director stated, “The passage of Amendment One is a profound injustice. Singling out a class of citizens for discriminatory treatment is unfair, unlawful & violates basic American values. Gay & lesbian Americans, like their fellow citizens, want nothing more than to marry the person they love. Committed, loving couples & their families should not be denied this most fundamental freedom.” Updates to Come...
