Herndon Graddick Takes Helm at GLAAD

When we attended the GLAAD Media Awards in NYC last month I asked Sheri Fults, GLAAD’s National Co-Chair of the Board of Directors, when a decision would be made about the next president of GLAAD. She assured me that they were very close. Saturday it was announced that Herndon Graddick has been named the new president of the org. This time GLAAD decided to promote someone from within. Herndon Graddick is the current Vice President of Programs & Communications at GLAAD a position he assumed in 2010. In his role Graddick has led GLAAD's media initiatives & oversees the organization's National & Local News; Entertainment; People of Color; Religion, Faith & Values; Advertising; & Spanish-Language Media programs. Under his leadership, GLAAD has engaged in numerous highly visible & successful campaigns including ‘Stand Up For Ellen,’ which prompted the group One Million Moms a project of the American Family Association to end their call for J.C. Penney to fire Ellen DeGeneres as its new spokesperson because she is gay. Graddick also oversaw GLAAD’s work on the Commentator Accountability Project an initiative launched in March to highlight the extreme rhetoric of anti-LGBT activists who currently appear in national news outlets. He is leading efforts with the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition (MTPC) on the “I AM: Trans People Speak” video series as well as with film director Brett Ratner to develop a series of videos with GLAAD featuring high-profile celebrities & public figures speaking out for LGBT equality. Graddick has also put resources behind GLAAD’s work to share stories of LGBT people of color & allies with African American media, sports media & Spanish-language news outlets, among others. Prior to GLAAD, Graddick served as the Executive Producer of the Global Observatory, a media & communications effort which aimed to bring public awareness to the climate change crisis. He also served as Supervising Producer at E! Networks & the day-of-air news division director at CURRENT TV, the youth-oriented news & entertainment network created by former Vice President Al Gore. As a producer at CNN, Graddick also contributed to the creation of daily primetime programming such as "Paula Zahn Now," "Anderson Cooper 360," & "Live from the Headlines." So this is the first time in a long time that GLAAD will actually be led by some with broadcasting experience. Graddick will be formally introduced at the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on April 21st. Updates to Come…:)

No Marriage Equality For Angelina & Brad

Gay marriage advocates Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt have given into pressure by their children & are officially engaged to marry. Since the couple got together in 2005 they claimed that they wouldn’t marry until gay marriage was legalized in the United States. "It (marriage) seems to mean more & more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren't going to do it 'til everyone can. But I don't think we'll be able to hold out," Pitt told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. "It means so much to my kids & they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment ... But to be in love with someone & be raising a family with someone & want to make that commitment & not be able to it is ludicrous, just ludicrous," he added. This past week Jolie was photographed at a LA museum wearing a large diamond ring on her engagement finger that Pitt helped to design. Jewelry maker Robert Procop said he had fashioned the ring in collaboration with Pitt, specifically for the actress. "The full creative journey - from conception to completion - took a year, with Brad Pitt waiting until the perfect moment to unveil this special jewel to Angelina Jolie," Procop's spokeswoman said in a statement on Friday. According to Pitt's spokeswoman Cynthia Pett-Dante a date hasn’t been set yet. It must be nice to have a choice whether or not to marry & receive the 1,138 federal rights of marriage that are denied to gay couples in this country. Congrats Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt!! Boy George Outcry At Russian Anti Gay Law

Boy George is having quite the month. While recovering from being punched in the eye by a drunken woman trying to grab his hat at a North Yorkshire England club in early April, he's taking a strong position urging gay celebrities worldwide to take a stand against the new anti gay law in Russia which bans the "promotion of homosexuality". The Russian law carries a $17,000 penalty & bans activities that "damage the health, moral & spiritual development of the underaged.” Four regions in this homophobic country can now impose these fines for "gay propaganda" aimed at minors & 2 activists were already arrested on April 12th for protesting the bill. The 80’s pop star of The Culture Club star is as outraged by the new law & has called on his gay peers to speak out against this anti gay legislation. "We need every gay star on the planet & every famous actor to make a stand about Russia's new anti gay legislation! We need major noise now," he posted on Twitter. Fierce Gay Ally Madonna, the iconic embodiment of “homosexual propaganda,” wrote on her Facebook page, “I will come to St Petersburg to speak up for the gay community, to support the gay community & to give strength & inspiration to anyone who is or feels oppressed."

Obama Playing Politics With Gay Rights

This was a disappointing but expected announcement as White House senior advisor Valerie Jarrett told representatives from gay rights groups yesterday that the President wouldn't be signing an executive order on LGBT non-discrimination for federal contractors anytime soon. “While it is not our usual practice to discuss executive orders that may or may not be under consideration, we do not expect that an executive order on LGBT non-discrimination for federal contractors will be issued at this time. We support legislation that has been introduced & we will continue to work with congressional sponsors to build support for it,” she told members of the Center for American Progress, Freedom to Work, HRC & the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Last week in our Easter post we told you about Jarrod Scarbrough & Les Sewell traveling from Albuquerque, New Mexico to attend with their 8 year old daughter Monday's Easter Egg Roll with their agenda to ask Obama to sign an executive order banning workplace discrimination by any federal contractor on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Well we’re sorry to say that fairytale didn’t work. So now our LGBT community is in a holding pattern probably until after the election because the Obama administration thinks perhaps that it would be political suicide to make a pro-gay move between now & November. The thing that is interesting about this is that Mitt Romney actually told the Nashua Telegraph back in November that, “I favor gay rights. I don’t believe in discriminating in employment or opportunity for gay individuals.” Updates to Come…:)
