Activists Father’s Day March in NYC

For Father’s Day, GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, has released videos of LGBT leaders, civil rights leaders & labor leaders discussing the negative impact of the stop & frisk policy in order to mobilize these movements for a Father’s Day march that will advance a shared agenda of equality & justice. Videos, included gay allies Rev. Al Sharpton, NAACP President Ben Jealous & Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union President Stuart Appelbaum. The videos follow on the heels of LGBT orgs from around the country, convened by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), joining civil rights leaders, labor leaders & elected officials at the Stonewall Inn to declare support for the increasingly visible campaign against stop & frisk & participation in a Father’s Day silent march to end racial profiling, which has been organized by the NAACP, National Action Network & United Healthcare Workers East. The historic Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village is where a backlash against police harassment in June 1969 launched the modern LGBT rights movement. Herndon Graddick, president of GLAAD stated, "LGBT people of color are twice as likely to experience police harassment simply because of who they are or what they look like. The time has come for communities to work together to ensure that every person has the ability to walk the streets of their community without fear of harassment—from fellow community members & those who we entrust to keep our communities safe." "The coming together of civil rights leaders & LGBT leaders on this issue is a historic union with broad social and political ramifications. If we fight for each others’ issues it broadens & strengthens each respective movement," said Rev. Al Sharpton, President of National Action Network, a convener of the Silent March Against Stop & Frisk and Racial Profiling, and MSNBC host, who endorsed marriage equality in 2004. This is definitely an interesting way to celebrate Father's Day. GOP Senators File Brief Supporting DOMA

(Washington, DC) In the past months we have had numerous federal judges ruling that DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional & causing harm to our LGBT people. So in the absurdity of it all we now have 10 anti gay Republican U.S. Senators filing an Amicus Brief supporting DOMA. The homophobic senators are: Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Dan Coats (R-IN), Thad Cochran (R-MS), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Charles Grassley (R-IA), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Richard Shelby (R-AL) & Roger Wicker (R-MS). We got this reaction from Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) who responded to the brief filed in the case Golinski v. Office of Personnel Management, asserting that no harm was intended to LGBT Americans through the passage of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) & that the law is the result of a significant government interest in clarifying the federal definition of marriage. Army Veteran & SLDN Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis stated, "There is absolutely no national interest in relegating gay & lesbian citizens to second class status with the passage of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act, & to say that no harm was intended to LGBT Americans is absurd at best. At worst, it's a blatant & mean-spirited attempt to slow down the progress we are making on securing the freedom to marry for all Americans. I urge these Senators - all of them from states with proud military traditions - to watch the video we released yesterday of a brave service member & his husband; then, justify to the brave gay & lesbian patriots serving this nation in uniform why they should not receive the same respect, recognition, & support as their straight peers." And the homophobic beat goes on…..Updates to Come…:)

Once Again US Senate Addresses ENDA

Today the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee will hold a hearing on ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act) after 4 senators, Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Bob Casey, D-Pa., Mark Kirk, R-Ill. & Susan Collins, R-Maine wrote the committee's chairman Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa to request the hearing. The letter stated, "Employees should be judged on their skills & abilities in the workplace & not on their sexual orientation or gender identity. While some states prohibit public & private employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation & gender identity, recent studies have found evidence of continued widespread employment discrimination against LGBT people." The federal law to ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation has dragged-on for years. ENDA was first introduced in 1994. The House of Representatives approved it in 2007 on a bipartisan vote but the Senate never voted on it. Gays & lesbians now serve openly in the military since the repeal of DADT. Gay couples can now legally marry though without 1100 federal rights in Connecticut, Washington DC, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont & there is some form of legal recognition in 12 states more states but in 29 states gay workers can still be fired or denied promotions simply because they're gay. Of course our transgender community are the most vulnerable. However federal government employees are protected by a policy that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation & gender identity & almost 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies have their own nondiscrimination policies. So it’s time to stop this discrimination against our LGBT community & PASS ENDA NOW!! Updates to Come…:) Exclusive Audio Interview with Andrew Peterson, Director of Programming for the Provincetown International Film Festival that takes place in Provincetown, Massachusetts June 13th through June 17th. Booed Soldier Campaigns for Gay Marriage

Army Captain Stephen Hill the gay soldier who drew national attention when he was booed during a Republican presidential debate after asking a question via video about the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) recently returned from a deployment to the Middle East. Captain Hill & his husband Joshua Snyder have joined forces with Freedom To Marry & Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) & have released a new online video spotlighting the inequalities forced upon gay & lesbian service members by the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Hill & Snyder are also plaintiffs in landmark litigation filed in October 2011 by SLDN on behalf of 8 married gay & lesbian service members & veterans challenging DOMA & other federal statutes that are being used to prevent the military from providing the same protections & support to all families. Joshua Snyder stated, "Steve's deployment brought home to us the stark realities that gay & lesbian families face because of the Defense of Marriage Act. If something happened to me, Steve would not have been able to take emergency leave, because the military cannot recognize our relationship. If something terrible happened to him, I would not be considered the next-of-kin. Service members & their families making the kind of sacrifices that are required to serve this country shouldn't be treated as second-class citizens & their marriages shouldn’t be treated as second-class marriages.”

Boston Gay Pride Parade’s Political Agenda

Today the 42nd annual Boston Pride Parade is scheduled to kick off at noon & for the first time in years it’s sunny with no rain in the forecast. This being an election year Governor Deval Patrick will be leading a group of volunteer supporters for President Obama. Patrick is the national co-chair of Obama's re-election campaign. Deval & the Obama for America volunteers will gather on Boylston street between Dartmouth & Clarendon streets at 11:30A. Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren also plans on marching in the parade. Hopefully Senator Scott Brown will be nowhere in sight with his weak LGBT equality stance. We have a lot to celebrate this year with Obama becoming the first president to come out for gay marriage & GLAD (Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders) will be marching after their victory with the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that section 3 of DOMA, (the Defense of Marriage Act) which denies us of our 1100+ federal benefits is unconstitutional. Now most likely marriage equality will be headed to the Supreme Court. Then of course every local pro-equality candidate will be marching seeking our votes. There will also be tons of floats & marching bands & just fabulous fun. We’ll be taking pictures & have a full update after the parade. HAPPY PRIDE BOSTON!! Dallas Gay Pride & Club Scene

I always wanted to visit Dallas Texas so when the opportunity came up this week I went for it. The gay scene in Dallas puts Boston to shame. The gay ghetto in Dallas has bars, clubs & restaurants around the Cedar Springs Rd area. The big gay guys bar is called JR’s & fittingly the women have Sue Ellen’s. We had dinner at Dish which was fabulous. Then off to Round-Up which was like the gay version of Urban Cowboy minus the mechanical bull. The dance floor was packed with couples doing the two-step in a large circle that I refer to as a gay carousel. This was Thursday night yet the streets were filled with our LGBT community having a blast. The bars & clubs are far from dives but instead upscale venues that would challenge any other gay-friendly city like San Francisco or NYC. JR’s Bar balcony overlooking the street was overflowing with guys out & proud. Of course while in Texas my friend Joel gave us quite the tour of the city from where JFK was assassinated to the high end stores & homes in the Turtle Creek section of Dallas. Overall this is a great gay-friendly city to visit & a refreshing place to celebrate gay pride. This week even a Dallas City Council member kicked off LGBT Pride Month with a commencement in the Flag Room of City Hall including a signed proclamation, as well as supportive comments from elected officials & community leaders. So Happy Pride Dallas!! Exclusive Audio Interview with Orlando Del Valle who serves on the Board of Directors of The History Project.
