Miller Foundation with the 2020 Champion Award & Chioke Waithe-Howard with the 2020 Outstanding Youth Leader Award. Founded in 1994 True Colors is the longest running LGBTQ youth theater program in the country. True Colors uses a proven community-engaged theater model to train LGBTQ & allied youth leaders in writing & performance skills. The majority of True Colors youth are 14-22 years old from Boston neighborhoods. True Colors transforms real-life stories of queer youth into powerful performances & workshops based on their lived experiences of topics such as bullying, homelessness, coming out & discrimination. By touring to local schools & community groups, these performances combat bigotry, hate & discrimination. True Colors is a safe space for all youth, where they can explore their identities & build key creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication & problem solving skills. True Colors provides direct service to 90 youth annually & reaches an average of 3,000 audience members each year. Being this is a crucial fundraiser in these challenging times Beyond The Stage tickets price levels run from complimentary to $5,000 but you must register. Catholic Church & LGBTQ Families

As we wait for the outcome of the presidential election our LGBTQ families are once again being attacked by the radical religious right arm of the Catholic Church as Fulton v. City of Philadelphia goes before the Supreme Court this morning for oral arguments. The case could give taxpayer funded agencies a broad license to discriminate when providing social services to someone who is LGBTQ, holds different religious beliefs, has been previously divorced or otherwise contradicts what they say their agency believes. This is all happening even though Pope Francis recently stated, “LGBTQ people should be able to create families.” Kierra Johnson, Deputy Executive Director of the National LGBTQ Task Force stated, "With Pope Francis in agreement that the Catholic faith should not prevent LGBTQ people from building families, it is clear to us that this is not about religious beliefs at all but a push to nullify civil rights protections for all of us." Fulton v. City of Philadelphia involves same gender couples & foster care service. If the new Amy Coney Barrett Supreme Court rules in favor of Catholic Social Services it could give taxpayer-funded service agencies a legal right to discriminate against any group of people solely based on religious beliefs. This includes services like foster care, food banks, homeless shelters, disaster relief services & many other services that will impact communities of minority faiths, LGBTQ communities, unmarried couples & many other people currently protected by our nation's patchwork of civil rights laws. If we lose this case the consequences will be beyond our LGBTQ community but for everyone.

Lesbian Series "Dating In Place" (VIDEO)

In these social distancing times something to definitely check out is "Dating In Place" the new original series available to stream exclusively on OML (formerly “One More Lesbian”) channel on the Revry Network. Told through the screens & mobile devices of four young women the show follows Jo a hopeful romantic who finds the woman of her dreams only to discover that her crush lives halfway across the world. The original series consists of 10 episodes & filmed from the novel perspective of the four female leads & is created by director Marina Rice Bader (Ava's Impossible Things) & Shantell Yasmine Abeydeera (The Influencer, Girls Like Magic) who wrote the series & stars as Jo’s crush Debika. Marina Rice Bader stated, “As someone who has always been both challenged & fascinated by the idea of ‘true love’ I wanted to explore what it means to be on the brink of that magical experience only to have circumstances out of your control crash in & threaten to steal it away from you. Finding real love is tough enough, you know, without a global pandemic working against you.” Shantell Yasmine Abeydeera concluded, “The pandemic hindered a lot more than just romance. With film productions being shut down indefinitely, filmmakers not only lost their livelihoods but their purpose as storytellers. I saw this as an incredible opportunity to craft a story around the technology that was available to me in the hopes that it would allow me to continue to tell inclusive stories.” The "Dating In Place" cast also includes Emily Goss (Future Man, Seasons of Love), Kari Alison Hodge (Goodkisser, Crazy Bitches) & Mandahla Rose (All About E, Venice: The Series). Nadine Smith Equality Florida CEO stated, “It was a huge political breakthrough for an out gay man to run for president as a major party candidate & it was an equally tremendous cultural breakthrough for Chasten to stand beside his husband every step of the way, supportive, authentic & a force for change in his own right. For countless Americans, Chasten & Pete brought a new level of visibility & honesty to our community that was real & raw & relatable. We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Chasten & hope it will inspire others to live their lives out & proud & for parents to always love all their kids exactly the way they are.” Chasten concluded, “I’m still a little overwhelmed to be receiving such an honor, for being myself & living my truth. Still, I am proud of what we’ve done, how far we’ve come, if it helps even one young LGBTQ person to live without fear of rejection & to realize their dreams. At the same time, I know how much Equality Florida, which is very much the vanguard of LGBTQ equality work - has contributed to that process.” The Legacy For Equality Award (posthumous) will go to Wilton Manors Mayor Justin Flippen who died suddenly of a brain aneurism in February while on his way to a commission meeting. Helping PFLAG Earns Eagle Scout Rank

Transgender PFLAG teen Beatrix Jackman in Austin, Texas is among the first female Scouts to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. The teen passed her board of review on Oct. 1st to become one of the inaugural female Eagle Scouts. Having been active with PFLAG since she came out as transgender Jackman focused her service project on supporting PFLAG Austin by sourcing, creating & distributing self-care kits. Jackman stated, “It was important to do this project for PFLAG because they helped save my life & assisted my mom in becoming the supportive ally she is today.” Anna Nguyen, President of PFLAG Austin stated, “We are very proud to have been a part of Ms. Jackman's journey & we are happy to have assisted her in her challenge of becoming one of the first female Eagle Scouts. When Beatrix first came out, she & her mom came to our support groups. As with many other families with a newly out transgender child, they found a supportive, empowering, comforting environment in our support groups, as well as useful information & beneficial anecdotes from other parents & others in the queer community. Now, through her Eagle project, she has given back to help others feel supported, too.” Brian K. Bond PFLAG National Executive Director concluded, "Community service is core to the mission of Scouting & for years PFLAG has advocated for LGBTQ+ youth to be included in that mission. We are very proud of Beatrix & all the transgender & LGBTQ+ Scouts who demonstrate that a leader is a person whose skills & passion, inclusive of their sexual orientation & gender identity, are driven to serve." Video Killed The Radio Star (AUDIO)

This week I talked with Kent Ian Paterson a producer at KUNM-FM in Albuquerque, New Mexico about my early years as a Progressive Rock DJ that kicked off my broadcasting career. Paterson contacted me in August about a history he was compiling at KUNM to celebrate the station’s 54th anniversary. Once it was confirmed I was the same person that worked at KUNM back in the early 1970s the conversations began. I talked about how I originally came to the University of New Mexico in 1969 & became involved with KUNM stating, “I went to UNM because they listed available courses in Radio & TV but when I got there I found out that those classes wouldn’t be offered for a few years. So I answered an ad on KUNM-FM looking for 'chicks to sharpen pencils'. When I applied they suggested I get my FCC license so I did. When I returned with my license they gave me a weekly shift on Thursdays from 1A to 3A. At the time UNM women had a 12 Midnight curfew & men did not. So the ACLU got involved & the curfew was lifted. I guess that was my first experience in the fight for equality.” It was the beginning of the Women’s Movement who adopted me because of the role I played in the ACLU curfew resolve. Paterson added, “You & the other women who were at KUNM 50 years ago were trailblazers. Women became much more prominent at KUNM after the mid 1970s. The station's first female manager served from 1974 to 1976.” We then talked about how my KUNM experience led to my career in broadcasting breaking the glass ceiling for women at WCVB-TV in Boston & then on to ABC, NBC & CBS TV Networks in New York, NY.
