Boston Pride Equality Events

Our good friend photographer Adam Bouska, co-founder of the fabulous NOH8 Worldwide Movement will be in Boston to take photos at the W Hotel at 100 Stuart Street between 2P & 6P this Saturday April 23rd. Photos are first-come, first-serve, so come early & camera-ready with a plain white shirt to add your face to the fight for LGBT equality. Then with hundreds & possibly thousands of our LGBT community & allies flocking to the city all dolled up & dressed in white to have their picture taken for the annual photo shoot head over to the Twisted Tea Dance White Party that will be taking place with DJ Andrea Stamas spinning at Wild Rover at 63 Chatham Street in Faneuil Hall from 3P to 9P in Boston. (White is encouraged but not required.) So get your picture taking early & then head on over, to avoid waiting in line. Boston Pride Week takes place June 3rd through June12th & this is a great opportunity to meet some of the Boston Pride team as they will be in the house giving away many cool things, such as Pride tickets to both the festival on Saturday & Back Bay Block party on Sunday. We all know Tea Dances have always been a huge part of our culture, bringing the entire LGBTQ community along with our friends & allies together all under one roof. There's a $8 cover with a portion donated to the Boston Pride. This is a 21+ event & you must have your ID to get in.

Dining Out For Life (AUDIO)

Dining Out For Life is a fabulous HIV/AIDS fundraising event that takes place on Thursday April 28th. More than 3,000 participating restaurants in nearly 60 cities across North America donate a generous percentage of that day’s proceeds to support service providers in their region to fund care, prevention, education, testing, counseling & other essential HIV/AIDS services. An estimated $4 million will be raised in just one day of dining. Ted Allen, Dining Out For Life Spokesperson & host of “Chopped” stated, “I love working with Dining Out For Life because it’s just such a cool, very low overhead operation that raises more than $4 million for American HIV & AIDS service organizations in a single day. It also helps restaurants & chefs get new people coming in to try what they’re doing. It just seems like such a win-win-win for everybody.” Alan Bethke, Subaru of America Vice President of Marketing that hosts the event added, “We have been the host sponsor of Dining Out For Life for a decade; however, the struggle to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues on. Subaru is proud to be part of an event that spreads awareness for such a worthy cause & also encourages people to support those who need it most in their local communities.” Volunteer spokespeople also included include actor Pam Grier (Foxy Brown, Jackie Brown), designer Mondo Guerra, winner of Lifetime’s Project Runway All-Stars & chef Daisy Martinez from Food Network’s Viva Daisy! The Untamed Stage Musical

In the shocking Thrillpeddlers & Cockettes’ tradition “The Untamed Stage” a Weimar Berlin-inspired musical production by Scrumbly Koldewyn is being presented at The Hypnodrome in San Francisco as a two-act music theatre piece now through May 28th on Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays at 8P. Scrumbly Koldewyn stated, “Hearing Ute Lempur’s album, Berlin Cabaret for the first time in 1998, inspired me to put on an evening of the music (the first edition of “The Untamed Stage”) & to do some extensive digging for more Weimar period popular songs in Germany. As much ahead of the rest of the world as Berlin’s wild free-wheeling night life was, the songs, many by Hollaender (“Falling In Love Again”) & Spoliansky, the Cole Porter and Noël Coward of Germany, are amazingly skilled and extensively numerous. Unfortunately, for this 2016 production, obtaining the performing rights are very complicated, so I decided to create new material “in the style of” the 20s Berlin songs. Not to compete with Kander and Ebb’s “Cabaret”, I chose to carry the irony & the explicitness a step or two further. However themes remain the same; man-devouring vamps, the blending of gender, biting social commentary, etc. Songs will be sung by performers with that certain Berliner attitude – “We are who we are”. Dr. Mel Gordon’s pictorial book, Voluptuous Panic, further inspired Thrillpeddlers & myself to put together a show that reflects the relevance of Weimar Berlin to present-day San Francisco, where the denizens might be too intent on being entertained & distracted to take note of a rising tide of hatred & fear in the rest of the country.”

Mississippi Legalizing Hate

The National LGBTQ Task Force has joined hundreds of organizations, companies & media calling on Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi to resign. One week ago the governor signed HB 1523 into law that legalizes discrimination against our LGBTQ community. This new law may also lead to discrimination against unmarried people raising children, unmarried people having sex & others. Rea Carey, National LGBTQ Task Force, Executive Director stated, “Mississippi has once again passed a law that unduly infringes on basic human rights. What Governor Bryant did was immoral. That's why he must resign immediately. By signing this law, he is targeting some of the poorest people with the least legal protections in our nation, Mississippi's LGBTQ community. Bryant manipulated faith & cherished constitutional rights to justify this reprehensible action. Make no mistake: this law was knowingly designed to have the biggest negative impact on the most vulnerable. Contrary to what the Governor has said, this law makes a mockery of the basic American idea that we are guaranteed freedom of religion & freedom from religion. We believe that what he did makes his position untenable." Mississippi has the highest proportion of gay & lesbian couples raising children in our nation at 26%. It has one of the highest percentages of Black gay & lesbian couples. Mississippi has the highest number of poor people in the country — many of whom are LGBTQ. "These folks already face devastating discrimination and racism. With this law they are going to face more. This is what makes Bryant's action so despicable," Carey added. The state's new law discriminates against LGBTQ people & many others in a number of different contexts. These include: the workplace, at schools, in health care settings & in public spaces such as stores, hotels or eateries by giving individuals, religious associations & private entities the right to use their religious beliefs as an excuse to "shut the door" on anyone they choose.
