Texas Black LGBTQ Advancement Event

The Black Queer Advancement Festival (BQAF) takes place March 14th to 17th with the fabulous former Destiny’s Child group member LeToya Luckett headlining the BQAF Music Festival on Saturday March 16th at Warehouse Live Midtown (formerly Rise Rooftop) 2600 Travis Street in Houston, Texas. In response to recent comments by Texas Governor Greg Abbott dismissing claims of “systemic” discrimination against LGBTQ individuals the Normal Anomaly Initiative announced the release of 200 free tickets for their community to attend. Ian L. Haddock, Founder & Executive Director stated, “I believe in the power of unity & celebration as a force for change. In the heart of Texas, our queer voices & vibrant celebrations will not be silenced. Normal Anomaly Initiative stands firm, providing a platform for the LGBTQIA+ community to thrive. Capital Pride Alliance Is Totally Radical

Capital Pride Alliance (CPA) has announced its theme "Totally Radical" for this year’s Pride celebration embracing the vibrant energy of our LGBTQ community & to pay homage to the radical spirit that defined the activism & progress of the 1980s & ‘90s. Ryan Bos, Executive Director of CPA stated, "Capital Pride’s 2024 theme celebrates the courageous spirit & unwavering strength & resilience that defined the LGBTQ+ community during the transformative decades of the 1980s & ‘90s". It's about embracing our authenticity, pushing boundaries & advocating for a world where everyone can live their truth without fear or discrimination." Ashley Smith, CPA Board President concluded, "As we reflect on our past & look towards the future, we are reminded of the power of unity & resilience. "The 'Totally Radical' theme embodies the boldness & determination of our community as we continue to fight for equality & acceptance." The Capital Pride Parade takes place on June 8th & the Capital Pride Festival is on June 9th 2024. In anticipation of WorldPride in Washington, DC in 2025 a streamlined Parade route has been unveiled for 2024. The new, two-mile route will begin at 14th & T Streets NW & conclude at Pennsylvania Avenue & 9th Street NW on June 8th. The Capital Pride Block Party & Family Area will remain in the historic core of the Dupont Circle neighborhood in partnership with local organizations & businesses. The Capital Pride Festival & Concert takes June 9th along Pennsylvania Avenue NW, featuring multiple stages, hundreds of exhibitors, food & beverage gardens with a re-imagined VIP experience.

Georgia Advances Religious Bigotry Bill

The Georgia Senate has advanced Senate Bill 180 that gives license to discriminate by allowing religious beliefs to be used as a justification for violating the basic civil rights of others. Bentley Hudgins HRC Georgia State Director stated, “If Senate Bill 180 becomes law, it could lead to LGBTQ+ Georgians – not to mention women, religious minorities & other vulnerable communities – being turned away from a business, denied housing or refused service because of who they are or who they love. Religious freedom is already deeply embedded in the U.S. & Georgia constitutions & it must not be wielded as a weapon to violate the basic civil rights of others. Lawmakers in the Georgia House of Representatives should quickly reject this discriminatory bill.” The Georgia Chamber of Commerce & Metro Atlanta Chamber have publicly opposed SB 180 stating “We believe it is best to focus on issues like workforce development, infrastructure & education which move our state forward & improve the quality of life for all Georgians. … we oppose any efforts, including SB 180, that would undermine the state’s strong reputation we have built together.” More than 300 major U.S. corporations have spoken out to oppose anti-LGBTQ legislation being proposed in states across the country. Major employers in tech, manufacturing, hospitality, health care, retail & other sectors are joining together to say that discrimination is bad for business & to call on lawmakers to abandon these efforts. A similar 2015 bill in Indiana resulted in the loss of 12 conventions & had a negative economic impact of up to $60 million in losses.

Ghana Bill Criminalizes LGBTQ People

Ghana’s parliament has passed "Human Sexual Rights & Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021” which will have severe & detrimental effects on the lives & freedoms of our LGBTQ community in Ghana. The bill violates the African Commission on Human & Peoples’ Rights Resolution 275 that aims to protect individuals from violence & discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity & to ensure their equal protection under the law. Neela Ghoshal, Senior Director of Law, Policy & Research at Outright International stated, "Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ bill tramples human rights, undermines family values of acceptance & unity & risks derailing economic development & eroding democratic gains. Banning the very existence of queer people & their allies is unprecedented. The hostility this bill displays toward LGBTQ Ghanaians will put lives & livelihoods at risk”. David Stacy, HRC Vice President of Government Affairs concluded, “We are outraged to hear about the Ghanaian Parliament’s passage of the so-called ‘Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights &Ghanaian Family Values Act’ – a cruel bill that violates the fundamental rights of LGBTQI+ people & allies throughout Ghana. Every single lawmaker who voted to pass this bill is wrongly using their power to strip away the basic humanity of the people they are supposed to represent. We stand with our partners in Ghana during this harrowing time & we urge the Government of Ghana to reverse course on this bill that undermines human rights. We call on the international community to stand up for the rights of all LGBTQI+ people.” Just another wake-up call how crucial our upcoming presidential election is in this country to uphold the rights & dignity of all individuals regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Melodies For A Movement Event (AUDIO)

This week I talked with singer/songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway about her performance with the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus (BGMC) on March 16th at Jordan Hall in Boston, MA. The concert entitled "Melodies for a Movement" highlights the "Tyler’s Suite" that sheds light on the devastating impact of cyber-harassment & bullying that our LGBTQ youth continue to face. Tyler Clementi was the accomplished violinist who took his life in 2010 after being cyber-bullied by his Rutgers roommate for being gay. The "Tyler’s Suite" was created under the leadership of Composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin) & explores the voices & experiences of Tyler & his family through the music of 11 of today’s top composers including Ann Hampton Callaway. This powerful performance will feature a suite in 9 movements for chorus with a solo violin performance dedicated to the memory of Tyler Clementi. "Melodies for a Movement" also features a cabaret set by Callaway one of America's most gifted & prolific artists. Through the stirring composition of the "Tyler’s Suite" & the mesmerizing performance by Callaway this fabulous concert event will evoke empathy, foster understanding & promote acceptance. Especially in these difficult times with over 600 anti LGBTQ bills in states across the country, women's rights continue to be on the chopping block, antisemitism & hate crimes on the rise all as we head toward the 2024 presidential election. "Melodies for a Movement" honors Tyler Clementi's memory while igniting the flame of positive change to build a world where every individual is cherished for exactly who they are. I talked to Ann about what she hopes to accomplish with her music & her spin on our LGBTQ issues. LISTEN

LGBTQ Task Force Winter Party Honors

The National LGBTQ Task Force will honor SAVE Executive Director Todd Delmay & Equality Florida Board Co-Chair Jeff Delmay at the 2024 Winter Party Festival’s VIP Cocktail Reception in Miami Beach on March 1st. The Delmays have been at the forefront of the Florida LGBTQ civil rights movement & represent the union of two of Florida’s most influential activist organizations. Kierra Johnson, National LGBTQ Task Force Executive Director stated, "The Delmays are pioneers in the local and national LGBTQ+ community for their work fighting for marriage equality. This election year, our hard won rights & frankly those yet realized are at stake. As we work to Queer the Vote, we couldn’t imagine two better people to recognize. They truly are unrelenting advocates & pillars of our Miami community who continue, despite all odds, to pursue an equitable world for queer people in Florida and nationwide.” Todd Delmay concluded, “We are humbled to be honored not just as a couple, but as representatives of two of Florida's most successful organizations in the fight for full LGBTQ+ equality & we're excited the honor will be part of the celebration of love for the community that Winter Party represents. More than ever, our fight depends on our efforts to stand strong together in the face of hate.” The Winter Party Festival is an annual dance & music festival featuring a week-long series of events benefiting both local and national LGBTQ+ organizations. The VIP Cocktail Reception is a ticketed event & serves as the Task Force’s kick-off party to a week-long series of events inspiring the community to “Queer the Vote'' this crucial election year.
