Marriage Equality Wins In USA

My first reaction to learn that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that marriage equality is now the law in the USA brought me to tears. I called my wife Marilyn at work immediately to tell her & we both cried. This has been a long hard but thrilling fight to be part of the marriage equality movement in this country & I am just overwhelmed to finally know my wife & I can freely move throughout this country as equal citizens, at least when it comes to our marriage. Janson Wu, GLAD Executive Director stated, “Words can hardly express how fortunate I feel to be a part of this historic moment. Marriage equality is now the law in every state in the U.S. Today, the Supreme Court upheld the dignity & equality of LGBT individuals everywhere & opened a path to security for hundreds of thousands of families across the country. Today’s historic decision caps nearly 25 years of legal challenges, grassroots activism, legislative advocacy & everyday people sharing the stories of our lives, our love & our families." We want to thank all the marriage equality organizations that we have worked go closely with over the last 11 years. Especially my friend Mary Bonauto GLAD’s Civil Rights Project Director who argued the case before the Supreme Court. There are going to be historic parties tonight & through the weekend. Americans from every corner of this nation have worked for decades for this moment by sharing our stories of love, commitment, and family. This is an historic day. The Court’s decision reflects decades of tireless work by advocates and the quiet courage of everyday gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans who have loved openly and proudly. This is a moment for celebration for the same-sex couples and their families whose commitment and love will now be honored by their communities, states, and nation. The love they have shown has made us a stronger, more perfect union and our country’s progress on marriage equality gives us hope and resolve to finish the work at hand to ensure that all Americans, including our LGBT brothers and sisters, are afforded equal dignity and rights under the law in all areas of life.

Unfortunately, as we celebrate this decision, we are reminded that a couple can be married on Sunday and then be fired from their job or denied a loan on Monday. Congress and the remaining 31 states that do not have clear protections from discrimination for LGBT Americans must now modernize the nation’s nondiscrimination laws by providing LGBT people with the same protections from discrimination afforded to other Americans.
