PFLAG To Honor Joy Reid

PFLAG National the nation's first & largest organization for LGBTQ people, their families & allies announced it will honor TV host & political analyst Joy Reid at its 45th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday May 9th at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. Ms. Reid will receive her award from Pulse attack survivor Brandon Wolf who is the co-founder & serves as the Vice President of The Dru Project, a nonprofit organization that establishes Gay Straight Alliances in public high schools & provides college funding to future leaders in the LGBTQ community. Wolf stated, “I can think of no one more fitting for the PFLAG National Straight for Equality in Media award than Joy Reid. She has perpetually been among the fiercest advocates of the LGBTQ community & has leveraged her role as a media figure to demand equality for all people & accountability for those in power. I am honored to be presenting this award to my friend & ally.” Reid sated, "It's such an honor to receive this award from PFLAG & I am mindful that it comes at a time when many of the battles for equality for LGBT people that in recent years felt all-but won are having to be re-fought & old fears of injustice are returning. All I can do, as an ally, is stand with you, lock arms with you, listen to you & speak up. If I've done that reasonably well, I am humbled & grateful." PFLAG was founded in 1972 by Jeanne Manford a New York schoolteacher after her gay son, activist Morty Manford, was harassed & beaten she marched by his side in an early precursor to NY Pride & found herself surrounded by young LGBTQ people asking her to reach out to their parents.

Student Global AIDS Action Week

Student Global AIDS Action Week runs April 9th to 13th. The National Alliance of State & Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) will join five days of grassroots action to show the U.S. government they will not stand by while it delays & deprioritizes fighting for people living with HIV & AIDS. The U.S. has been a leader in the response to the AIDS epidemic for the last 15 yeas & NASTAD demands that instead of backing away America must continue to lead the way to an AIDS-free generation. Because HIV exists at the intersection of public heath and social justice, NASTAD will join the Action Week to address five issues where progress is critical – from immigrant rights to ending poverty & tackling homophobia to achieve the goal of an AIDS-free generation. NASTAD is a leading nonpartisan, nonprofit association that represents public health officials who administer HIV & hepatitis programs in the U.S. & around the world. Their singular mission is to end the intersecting epidemics of HIV, viral hepatitis & related conditions. They do this work by strengthening domestic and global governmental public health through advocacy, capacity building & social justice. The Student Global AIDS Campaign (SGAC) is a US-based network of student & youth organizations, including HIV+ youth, committed to the global fight against AIDS. SGAC seeks to mobilize a diverse student movement, in partnership with students internationally, to make claims upon governments, corporations & civil society through informed political advocacy & direct action. SGAC demands sufficient resources, effective prevention & guaranteed access to AIDS treatment & care as a matter of moral urgency.

Transgender Victory In Alaska

Alaska rejected Proposition 1 which was a sweeping anti-transgender ballot measure aimed to overturn the trans-inclusive portions of Anchorage’s 2015 nondiscrimination ordinance & require trans people to use public restrooms that correspond to their original birth certificate. Rebecca Isaacs, Executive Director, Equality Federation stated, “This historic win for equality is a testament to the fair-minded majority of voters in Anchorage & the extraordinary voter turnout efforts by Fair Anchorage, Alaskans Together for Equality & the many volunteers on the ground. All Americans, including transgender people & their families, should have the opportunity to be themselves without fear of discrimination.” Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD concluded, “Anchorage’s transgender community worked tirelessly with the city’s faith & business leaders & local & national organizers, to build a powerful coalition of love & support & to combat the fear-mongering tactics of anti-LGBTQ activists to defeat this dangerous anti-trans ballot measure. Proposition 1 was exposed as a clear attack on transgender people & unequivocally rejected by voters who put their love of their neighbors & the safety of their entire community above hate.” This is the first time voters defeated a ballot measure that singles out transgender people for discrimination & sets a historic precedent as Massachusetts will face the first-ever statewide ballot initiative on transgender rights which will appear on the November 2018 ballot. There is also a looming anti-trans ballot measure in Montana where signatures are currently being collected to place the Initiative 183 on the state’s Election Day 2018 ballot.

Mike Pompeo Supports Hate Groups

Mike Pompeo’s anti-LGBTQ record goes far beyond his personal beliefs of opposing marriage equality & the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Pompeo has worked closely with the Family Research Council the anti-LGBTQ group which openly supported Uganda’s “Kill the Gays Bill” & defends the dangerous practice of conversions therapy & actively opposed overturning laws that criminalize homosexuality. Pompeo has earned Family Research Council’s endorsement & praise, appearing on their anti-LGBTQ radio program at least six times & personally consulting with their president Tony Perkins while serving the United States as CIA Director. The U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations must hold Pompeo accountable to his anti-LGBTQ record in his Secretary of State upcoming confirmation hearing. Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD stated, “During his time in the Trump Administration, Mike Pompeo has personally consulted with Family Research Council, an anti-LGBTQ hate group that supported Uganda's efforts to punish & execute LGBTQ people. The American people deserve answers about Pompeo’s ties to anti-LGBTQ extremism, which should have no place in the U.S. State Department. Unless Mike Pompeo can unequivocally state that LGBTQ rights are human rights, he is wholly unqualified to be the nation’s top diplomat.” GLAAD is asking the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations to take into full consideration of Mike Pompeo opposing position on LGBTQ equality, reproductive rights, Muslim & immigrant rights.

Media Visionaries At ClexaCon

Emmy Winning Broadcaster Charlotte Robinson will be appearing at ClexaCon the media & entertainment event for LGBTQ women & allies that takes place at the Tropicana in Las Vegas April 5th through April 9th. She will be joining author & graphic designer Robin Lowey & journalist Kathy Belge for their panel entitled “Game Changers: How These Outliers Affected Queer Culture” on Friday April 6th at 10A in the Marsha P. Johnson room at the Tropicana. "Game Changers" will address our community before Ellen, The L Word & Orange Is the New Black when lesbians were often at great risk in pursuit of community & culture. Many women lost their jobs, were thrown in jail & kicked out of families when their identities were revealed. Nevertheless they persisted. This is an opportunity to hear the stories of lesbians & lesbian culture that paved the way for where we are today. Robinson stated, “When I worked in media during the 1970’s & 1980’s you had to be in the closet or risk being fired on the spot. Most of my colleagues knew but if you were gay back then you had to play the straight game which was beyond stressful. So I played the game until I couldn’t do it anymore. I had to be my authentic self so I worked freelance until creating my own online news network.” In 2004 Charlotte produced & directed the acclaimed short film OUTTAKE™ addressing gay marriage that was instrumental in passing marriage equality that morphed into an online news network that broadcasts to an audience of over a million people globally. Other media visionaries scheduled to appear at ClexaCon are Christin Baker & Bridget McManus from tello Films, filmmaker Marina Rice Bader, actress Marlene Forte & Publicist Mona Elyafi to name a few.
