Gay Marriage Valentines Day Action

This is the 12th year in a row that loving committed gay couples have appeared at clerk’s offices across the country on Valentines Day to request marriage licenses & to render visible the harm that excluding them from marriage causes them & their families. “The struggle for marriage equality is a critical element in the broader movement for LGBTQ equality. Denying same gender couples the freedom to marry undermines their dignity as human beings & excludes them from over 1,00 rights & protections under federal law,” said Billy Bradford of Marriage Equality USA & GetEQUAL. In San Francisco the annual event has never been more important or appropriate given the Ninth Circuit Federal Court of Appeals’ declaring Proposition 8 unconstitutional & Washington State becoming the next state to have marriage equality. “Today, we go to marriage license counters across the country to tell our stories and to show that we live in every community & that we want to honor & protect our families just like everyone else,” said Rev. Roland Stringfellow, Director of Ministerial Outreach for the Center for Lesbian & Gay Studies. “Love makes a marriage. The time for marriage equality is now,” concluded Stringfellow. Of course if you happen to live in Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Washington D.C., Iowa or New Hampshire where gay marriage is legal you will receive marriage licenses, but these unions are still not recognized on the federal level.

Gay Marriage Signing in Washington State

Monday in Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire will sign a measure legalizing gay marriage. The House passed the bill on a 55-43 vote last Wednesday a week after the Senate approved it. Gregoire will sign the bill in the state reception room in the Capitol at 11:30A PST. The law will take effect June 7, but of course opponents have promised to fight back with a ballot measure that would allow voters to overturn it. If opponents gather enough signatures to take their fight to the ballot the law is put on hold pending the outcome of a November election. They must turn in more than 120,000 signatures by June 6 to challenge the proposed law. An anti-gay marriage initiative has also been filed. To qualify, 241,153 signatures must be submitted by July 6. The homophobes should heed the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruling in the Prop 8 trial because in the end they will be defeated. As Judge Reinhardt wrote, “Proposition 8 serves no purpose & has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays & lesbians in California & to officially reclassify their relationships & families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples. The Constitution simply does not allow for laws of this sort.” Updates to Come….:)

Superstar Whitney Houston Dies

It’s so sad & disturbing that music legend Whitney Houston has died at the age of 48. The singer who was best known for singles ‘Saving All My Love for You,’ ‘How Will I Know’ & ‘I Will Always Love You’ was pronounced dead at 3:55P Saturday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. "We received a call at 3:43 p.m. from hotel security & Beverly Hills Fire & police responded minutes later," stated Beverly Hills Police Lt Mark Rosen. "It's unclear who notified hotel staff because she has quite an entourage here at the hotel. We attempted to resuscitate her, to no avail." The cause of death is unknown at this time. As for signs of drug use or foul play, Rosen added, "We don't know yet, her death is under investigation." Music mogul Simon Cowell stated, “Whitney Houston's death is one of those events where you remember what you were doing when you heard the news. It's that significant. I'm so sad for her. She was undoubtedly one of the greatest superstars of all time, one of the greatest voices in our lifetime we're likely ever to hear...." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the singer was due to appear at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party Saturday night. The article quotes someone close to Davis as saying, "This is a sad day & it will be a sad Grammys weekend." Sources say Jennifer Hudson will perform a tribute to the singer at tonight's awards. Obama Loves Our Gay Dollars

Last night in Northwest Washington D.C a fundraiser was held at a private home that brought the Obama campaign over a million dollars with tickets running to $35,800 a person. Obama was introduced by Chicago Cubs Laura Ricketts, the first openly gay owner of a major league baseball team & a major financier for the Obama campaign. Obama continues to defend his administration's record on LGBT rights. Still even with Prop 8 being found unconstitutional once again in California & Washington State about to sign marriage equality into law on Monday he did not address whether he has evolved on gay marriage. White House press secretary Jay Carney stated "I can tell you that divisive & discriminatory efforts to deny rights & benefits to same-gender couples are something that this president has long opposed.” But he would not answer specific questions about a timetable on Obama's evolution. Prop 8 Gay Marriage Appeal Ruling Today

United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Declares Proposition 8 Unconstitutional!!
AUDIO: Historic Olson & Boies Press Conference...
Our California LGBT community will be rallying throughout their state today as the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issues their ruling in the landmark federal civil rights case Perry v. Brown by 10A PST. The Ninth Circuit will determine whether to uphold the historic August 2010 decision of the Federal District Court that found Proposition 8 unconstitutional. Prop 8 stripped gay & lesbian Californians of the fundamental freedom to marry. In San Francisco gay couples, friends, family & clergy will gather at the steps of the Ninth Circuit Federal Courthouse at 9:45A PST to receive the Ninth Circuit’s ruling on Prop 8. Those gathered will then walk to the steps of San Francisco City Hall where clergy will bless the unions of couples unable to marry because of Prop 8. “We are very hopeful that the Ninth Circuit will rule in favor of fairness & equality, once and for all putting an end to Prop. 8’s exclusion of loving, committed couples from marriage,” said John Lewis, Marriage Equality USA’s Legal Director. We’ll be taking part in a national media conference at 11:45A PST with lead co-counsel Theodore B. Olson, David Boies, AFER Board President Chad Griffin, & plaintiffs for OUTTAKE VOICES™ to get their spin on the decision. For More Info on Rallies….

Gay Community United Against HRC

NEW YORK: The LGBT grassroots org Queer Occupy Wall Street protested against HRC’s Gala Dinner fundraiser Saturday night for honoring Goldman Sachs which Queer Caucus says helped spur the global financial meltdown. Protests in solitary took place San Francisco. Here’s the exclusive scoop from Queer OWS Caucus:

The action was a fabulous convergence of NYC's grassroots & beyond. A solidarity event was held in San Francisco at the Harvey Milk Camera Shop, now an HRC boutique & petitions that HRC withdraw the Sach award sprouted up on Daily Kos & Change.org. Among the 80 activists at the action, the Queer OWS Caucus was joined by Queer Rising & Queerocracy & the Radical Faeries & Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence who brought plums & magic to the mix with the message HELP. What really stood out is that the broader community is finally coalescing around a message of full equality NOW, organizing together & making it very clear that corporations like HRC do not speak for them. "But what HRC doesn't realize is that this was just the beginning of the engagement. The strategy for equality by 2014 means HRC needs to embrace this idea in the next 3-6 months, whatever action that may require," said Todd (Tif) Fernandez, who helped orchestrate the event.
