Gay Marriage Signing in Washington State

By Charlotte Robinson, February 13, 2012
Monday in Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire will sign a measure legalizing gay marriage. The House passed the bill on a 55-43 vote last Wednesday a week after the Senate approved it. Gregoire will sign the bill in the state reception room in the Capitol at 11:30A PST. The law will take effect June 7, but of course opponents have promised to fight back with a ballot measure that would allow voters to overturn it. If opponents gather enough signatures to take their fight to the ballot the law is put on hold pending the outcome of a November election. They must turn in more than 120,000 signatures by June 6 to challenge the proposed law. An anti-gay marriage initiative has also been filed. To qualify, 241,153 signatures must be submitted by July 6. The homophobes should heed the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruling in the Prop 8 trial because in the end they will be defeated. As Judge Reinhardt wrote, “Proposition 8 serves no purpose & has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays & lesbians in California & to officially reclassify their relationships & families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples. The Constitution simply does not allow for laws of this sort.” Updates to Come….:)
