UK Rally Against Anti Gay India

In London this Saturday January 11th there will be a protest for the repeal of India’s section 377 which criminalizes homosexuality with life imprisonment. James Howarth of the Peter Tatchell Foundation stated, “This rally is in solidarity with LGBT Indians & their straight allies. We are urging the Indian Parliament to repeal section 377 of the Indian penal code. Late last year, the Supreme Court of India recriminalized homosexuality. Chapter XVI, Section 377, of the Indian Penal Code dates back to 1861. Imposed by the British during the colonial rule of India, it criminalizes sexual activities ‘against the order of nature,’ including same-sex acts. It is a relic of colonialism, not an authentic indigenous law. Indian LGBTs seek our solidarity. The battle for LGBT freedom is a global one. We need your help to spread the word & ensure a turnout that will send a message to India that the time has come for LGBT equality.” Section 377 was declared unconstitutional with respect to sex between consenting adults by the High Court of Delhi in July 2009 & was unfortunately overturned by the Supreme Court of India last month with the Court ruling that amending or repealing Section 377 should be a matter left to parliament, not the judiciary. The London rally will take place on Saturday January 11th from 2 to 5P at the Indian High Commission, Aldwych, London WC2A 4NB.

Utah Gay Marriage On Hold

This is an unfortunate ruling. The US Supreme Court has put a hold on U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby’s decision to strike down Utah’s ban on marriage equality, which reinstates the state ban & will keep it intact until after a federal appeals court has ruled on it. So gay & lesbian couples will once again be discriminated against in Utah. Had the Supreme Court refused the state’s request for delay that would have left at least the impression that the Court was comfortable allowing gay marriages to go forward in the 33 states where they are still not permitted by state law. As you know Utah had asked for a delay from Justice Sonia Sotomayor who handles such emergency requests from the geographic region that includes Utah which is in the Tenth Circuit. She referred it to the full Court rather than acting alone. The Court acted within a short time after the final written filing had been submitted by state officials earlier in the day. As a result of the new order, the Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Denver, will go forward with an expedited review of Judge Shelby’s decision. The appeals court has ordered briefing to begin on January 27th & to be completed by February 25th. It has indicated it is not likely to grant any extensions of time to file those documents. A hearing date has not been set. Updates to Come…

“Katie” With Laverne Cox & More

On Monday’s episode of the nationally syndicated daytime talk show "Katie," airing January 6th, Katie Couric will be chatting with two of the biggest transgender trailblazers in this country, actress Laverne Cox & model Carmen Carrera. Actress & activist Laverne Cox stars in the current hit Netflix series “Orange Is The New Black.” She talks passionately about the realities of trans people’s lives & the importance of sharing those stories instead on focusing on their bodies. Carmen speaks honestly about the fears she had during her transitioning, her modeling career & the petition for her to become the first transsexual Victoria Secret model. Laverne Cox is also a great friend of OUTTAKE VOICES talking about her film “Musical Chairs” & appearing on our Red Carpet coverage of the GLAAD Awards over the years. When we asked her what it was like doing the show Cox stated, "It was so exciting to meet & speak with Katie Couric. I have been a big fan of hers for a long time. It was also a huge honor to share that stage with my sister, Carmen Carrera, who in going after her dreams has provided so much visibility for trans women. After taping the interview I was very reflective on how often trans folks have been on daytime talk shows & how I had never seen the conversation Carmen & I had with Katie on daytime TV shows. I am not sure what will be edited out of the televised interview but it was a conversation Katie said she felt she learned something from which is very exciting. It was a great experience." This is fabulous visibility for our LGBT community, so be sure to tune in.

Sybil Danning Rocks LA Bounty

Dealing with record low temperatures across the nation we surfed free movies on Comcast on-demand & found a hot gem in gay ally Sybil Danning’s “LA Bounty”. This 1989 cult classic play like a human video game where the Queen of the Action Flicks plays the lead as bounty hunter Rugar who comes to the aid of damsel in distress Kelly Rhodes played by Lenore Kasdorf. You may remember Lenore who played sexy Rita Bauer on the TV soap Guiding Light where I met & worked with her during my CBS days. We also interviewed Danning a few years ago on OUTTAKE VOICES when she talked about the gay TV network here TV where she starred in their series “The Lair” as Frau Von Hess. (Listen Below) But getting back to “LA Bounty”… Being that this film was made in 1989 it was refreshing to see the absence of cellphones & hi-tech as Danning singlehandedly takes on her evil adversaries led by Wings Hauser who plays Cavanaugh a very sick cookie. The caption for the movie states that Danning, “an ex-cop turned bounty hunter goes after a crazed killer”, which is a bit understated for the 80’s fashion feast that this film oozes. Austrian Danning appears like a female Arnold Schwarzenegger cleaning up Dodge as she takes on killers at every turn & saves the day. You’ll love this film that contains all the cult blood & gore killings of a fabulous B movie classic for your cabin fever entertainment.
“LA Bounty” is free on Comcast on-demand.

Gay Snow Day In Boston

Fifteen inches of snow & counting is the story in Boston today. It’s actually 5 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of 15 below. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has declared state of emergency as we dig out from the first major snowstorm of 2014. The snow is light & drifting but the chilling temperatures will cause frostbite if you don’t bundle up like a character out of “A Christmas Story”. The snow is expected to stop by noon in Boston then we’ll make our way out to clean off our cars & explore the winter wonderland. Fortunately we ventured out yesterday for the needed supplies to see this storm through. Now it’s just keeping cozy, watching movies & waiting for the snow to end. This is the time when New Englanders wonder why they live in this climate & entertain thoughts of laying on the beach on some tropical island. Then we remember though at the moment we’re socked in with snow across all of New England this is an LGBT equality zone. All six New England states have passed gay marriage & we’re leading the rest of the country towards full LGBT civil rights. So when you think about that what’s a little snow? Updates To Come…:)

Happy LGBT New Year 2014

Let’s make 2014 the best year for the advancement of LGBT equality. Not just in the US but we must reach out to our global community especially in countries like Russia, Uganda, India & even Australia that have implemented anti gay laws in the past year. In America let’s make this the year for all LGBT couples across the nation who are thinking about getting married to legally marry in 17 states & growing to show the 33 states that reject marriage equality who we are. The more determined we are to be treated equally the more foolish our opponents will appear to be. Look what’s happening in Utah. The homophobes are spinning their wheels & throwing their money out the window because they stand on the wrong side of history. This is also the year that ENDA must pass so workplace equality becomes a reality for our LGBT community & we must make America safe for our transgender community. Recently we talked to political humorist Kate Clinton about this who stated, “I think we really need to work & be more cognizant of trans issues. You know be they immigration issues, be they imprisonment issues, I think that we can in Obama’s last years, we can really push agencies to just make changes. You know, do executive orders to say that when a trans person is put in jail, if it’s a woman you don’t put that trans person into jail with men. That’s just a recipe for rape. I think that there are a lot of agencies throughout the government that are ready to have some really simple ideas that President Obama through executive order or whatever, can just put into effect. That’s the kind of thing that I would love to see. I know places like GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) & the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force have really been working hard with agencies throughout the government to make that kind of change. I hope they can do it before we lose the support of President Obama; just because he’s leaving office, not that he’s changing his mind.” Listen to Kate's full audio interview:
