In London this Saturday January 11th there will be a protest for the repeal of India’s section 377 which criminalizes homosexuality with life imprisonment. James Howarth of the Peter Tatchell Foundation stated, “This rally is in solidarity with LGBT Indians & their straight allies. We are urging the Indian Parliament to repeal section 377 of the Indian penal code. Late last year, the Supreme Court of India recriminalized homosexuality. Chapter XVI, Section 377, of the Indian Penal Code dates back to 1861. Imposed by the British during the colonial rule of India, it criminalizes sexual activities ‘against the order of nature,’ including same-sex acts. It is a relic of colonialism, not an authentic indigenous law. Indian LGBTs seek our solidarity. The battle for LGBT freedom is a global one. We need your help to spread the word & ensure a turnout that will send a message to India that the time has come for LGBT equality.” Section 377 was declared unconstitutional with respect to sex between consenting adults by the High Court of Delhi in July 2009 & was unfortunately overturned by the Supreme Court of India last month with the Court ruling that amending or repealing Section 377 should be a matter left to parliament, not the judiciary. The London rally will take place on Saturday January 11th from 2 to 5P at the Indian High Commission, Aldwych, London WC2A 4NB.
