GOP Attempt to Delay DADT Repeal

By Charlotte Robinson, September 16, 2011
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta got a letter from House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) & Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), who chairs the Military Personnel subcommittee trying to delay the repeal of DADT. The repeal goes into effect this Tueday September 20th. McKeon & Wilson argue that since their committee has not received copies of all regulation & policy changes that would occur because of the repeal they believe the Defense Department to be rushing a process that is not ready for implementation. Of course we know this is a last-ditch effort to delay the repeal because the homophobic conservatives want to keep our gay & lesbian servicemembers in the closet. Read Letter….

This is another example of the hardcore opposition attempting to delay or undo ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal. I expect they will continue to look for openings to deny gay and lesbian service members the same rights and dignity as their straight counterparts. On the substance, Mr. McKeon and Mr. Wilson are simply wrong. The statute only requires that the new regulations be prepared – not issued – before certification.
