Gay Marriage Good For Business

With gay marriage returning to California ABC News reported that within 5 years it’s estimated that marriage equality will bring 500 million dollars to The Golden State. Gay marriage is big business especially in this economy. Now New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the launch of a new “I Love NY LGBT” website, a one-stop tourism portal into all that New York State has to offer LGBT travelers. The website’s launch comes on the heels of the Governor’s pledge to grow tourism & jobs in New York State, including the launch of a new “I Love NY LGBT” initiative. The niche LGBT tourism brings approximately $70 billion in tourism spending in the U.S. every year. Governor Cuomo stated, “As part of our efforts to boost the tourism industry in New York, this pride month, we are launching the “I Love NY LGBT” website to highlight all of what the state has to offer to the LGBT community. New York State has a tremendous variety of ‘must see’ destinations for all travelers of different interests – whether they are wine connoisseurs, history buffs or outdoor adventurers. The website will be an important tool to help attract visitors, encourage spending in our communities and create jobs in the industry. New York has a proud history of welcoming the LGBT community & whether you’re planning a weekend trip or a destination wedding, I encourage all to come explore the Empire State.” With California & New York not only recognizing marriage equality its already in position to make it a fruitful enterprise. The other 11states where gay marriage is the law should definitely take notice & advantage of this new LGBT windfall.

Gay Marriage Returns to California

Now that Prop 8 has been dismissed on a lack of standing by the US Supreme Court the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit lifted its stay of the historic Federal District Court decision that found Proposition 8 unconstitutional. With marriage equality now restored in California the Plaintiffs who successfully challenged California’s Proposition 8 in Hollingsworth v. Perry were married. Plaintiffs Kris Perry & Sandy Stier of Berkeley, California were married Friday at City Hall in San Francisco. They were the first gay or lesbian couple to be married in California post-Proposition 8. California Attorney General Kamala Harris officiated. Perry & Stier’s son Elliott Perry served as a witness. Plaintiffs Paul Katami & Jeff Zarrillo of Burbank, California will be married at City Hall in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will officiate. Katami and Zarrillo’s best friends, Scott Jones and Devin Swanson of South Pasadena, California, will serve as witnesses. The weddings took place just 2 days after the United States Supreme Court issued a decision in Hollingsworth v. Perry that restores marriage equality to California. Plaintiff Kris Perry stated, “On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of the United States acknowledged that gay & lesbian Californians are equal under the law & can once again marry the person they love. Sandy & I realized that promise of equality, as we stand here united in marriage. We look forward to spending the rest of our lives together. Yet we will never forget this day—the day the freedom to marry was restored to our home state.” California becomes the 13th sate where gay marriage is the law. Updates to Come…:)

Fabulous New Sylvester CD OUT

Just in time for the celebration of our gay marriage victories in the US Supreme Court & 25 years after his untimely death the iconic legacy of Sylvester, the “Queen of Disco,” has been resurrected with Mighty Real: Greatest Dance Hits released this week on Fantasy Records. This is a must have CD for Sylvester fans. The collection celebrates the life & music of the artist who once danced his way into the hearts & minds of the disco & our LGBT communities. Sylvester makes a fabulous debut back into a prolific time in our LGBT history just the way he would have liked it – through dance music. This 11-track release, available on CD & on double pink vinyl that features a number of original album tracks & 12” mixes that are rare or no longer available on CD, as well as the brand new remix of the iconic “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” by Grammy-nominated remixer and DJ, Ralphi Rosario (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Madonna, etc.). Joshua Gamson stated, “Sylvester James was an unlikely star: an androgynous, cross-dressing, openly gay, African American, falsetto-singing, unapologetically flaming man-diva influenced primarily by church women, black blues singers, drag queens, hippies & homos. Like very few before him & quite a few after, Sylvester rode his marginality right into the mainstream.” Sylvester was a close friend of Harvey Milk & an icon to the LGBT community. He was not only one of the first disco stars to stand openly gay but bravely crossed beyond the boundaries of race, gender & sexuality to become a proud figure of the gay liberation movement. When he died due to complications of AIDS on December 16, 1988, Sylvester bequeathed royalties from the sale of his music to benefit two charitable organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area: the AIDS Emergency Fund & Project Open Hand. So this is a win win situation. I personal love this CD & have been blasting it driving in my car. It brings back amazing memories when disco ruled.

GLAD Celebrates End of DOMA

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) our LGBT community is celebrating throughout America. Tonight in Boston GLAD (Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders) the architects of gay marriage in this country are holding a DOMA Victory Party at Lir 903 Boylston St, Boston, MA from 6P until 8:30P. There will be complimentary hors d'oeuvres & a cash bar. Join our LGBT community & allies as we gather to celebrate this historic victory. Lee Swislow, GLAD's Executive Director will talk about the impact of the Supreme Court's decision, GLAD's strategic commitment to full marriage recognition & the next steps in our ongoing fight for full equal justice under law for the entire LGBT community. Swislow stated, “In two momentous victories, the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down Section 3 of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) & opened the door for marriage equality to return to California! With the stain of DOMA gone, married couples & their families now stand before their federal government as equals. I am so proud of the work GLAD has done for more than a decade to get us to this day - from our landmark Goodridge victory in Massachusetts that first brought marriage equality to the U.S., to our Gill & Pedersen cases that laid the groundwork for today's ruling against DOMA. The Supreme Court affirmed today what you & I have always known - there should be no gay exception in how the federal government treats marriages. We knew this day would come. We knew we had truth & justice on our side. I am so grateful for the support you have provided every step of the way.” So Come OUT & Celebrate Tonight!

Supreme Court Strikes Down DOMA

Marriage Equality USA has announced nationwide rallies marking the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to end the so-called Defense of Marriage Act’s exclusion of lesbian & gay couples from the over 1,100 federal protections and rights that come with marriage. Cathy Marino-Thomas, Marriage Equality USA’s Board Co-President stated, “My wife Sheila, our daughter Jacqueline & I are overjoyed that we will now have full federal protections for our family, just as any other married family does. For many years, the misnamed ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ has unfairly denied thousands of legally married gay & lesbian couples across the country federal protections in many areas of our lives, such as social security, veterans’ benefits, health care, taxes & immigration. Marriage Equality USA is very pleased that this discrimination is finally coming to an end.” Brian Silva, Marriage Equality USA’s Executive Director added, “It’s hard to overstate the importance of today’s Supreme Court decision on the day to day lives of married gay & lesbian couples. These couples will no longer be denied extremely important protections, such as the Family Medical Leave Act, that all other married couples have. Marriage Equality USA will continue to empower gay & lesbian couples & their friends, families, neighbors, and co-workers to share the truth of their lives so that we gain the freedom to marry in every state in the country. Many of our volunteers and leaders actively participated in making the freedom to marry a reality in Rhode Island, Delaware & Minnesota earlier this year. Our work won’t end until we have full nationwide equality for every American.” Updates to Come…:)

Gay Marriage Supreme Court Quest

We've been waiting on pins & needles for the much-anticipated US Supreme Court rulings on the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) & California's Proposition 8. All month we’ve been anticipating a decision & it looks like today will be the day. The LGBT political community is lining up with their experts to address whatever that decision may be. So now the Chief Justice says that tomorrow at 10A will be the last day & that they will release all the remaining opinions including Hollingsworth v. Perry, the Prop 8 case, United States v. Windsor, the Defense of Marriage Act case. We’ve given a lot of thought about which way the high court will rule. In regards to Prop 8 we think a few possible scenarios may occur. It could possibly be thrown back to the high court in California which has already found Prop 8 unconstitutional or it could settle this matter once & for all so that gay & lesbian couples in that state could resume being granted marriage licenses as they did before this horrendous bill passed in that state. We would like to remain on the positive end of that decision. As for United States v. Windsor which has already ruled section 3 of DOMA unconstitutional in New York we hope that this will lead to legally married gay & lesbian couples in the states where gay marriage is legal will be granted the 1100 federal rights provided for heterosexual couples. We again are thinking & hoping that the US Supreme Court will rule on the right side of history but anything can happen. What do you think?

Kate Clinton At The Crown & Anchor

We caught Kate Clinton’s new 2013 SIS-BOOM-BAH TOUR at the Crown & Anchor last night in Provincetown. Kate Clinton is our favorite faith-based, tax-paying, America-loving political humorist & family entertainer who still believes that humor gets us through peacetime, wartime & scoundrel time. With the US Supreme Court placing our entire LGBT community on pins & needles waiting to hear their gay marriage ruling this week, spending an hour with Kate who makes you laugh so hard that you can hardly see is definitely needed. Tony Kushner stated "Her new show is magnificent. . . " & The New York Times added, "Quick-witted, clear-spoken... She has developed a bizarrely logical, seemingly free-associating style of delivery & had this critic in tears from laughing so hard." Kate’s world-famous 2013 SIS-BOOM-BAH TOUR! runs all summer at the Crown in P-Town at 7P. Once again she’ll be shaking her pompoms, pumping up the crowd, leading the cheers & jeers. Kate explained to us the meaning of the new show’s title. She said that “Sis for the sisters & others. Boom for the boomers & babes. Bah to anyone who doesn’t have team spirit. Verbal stunts, tumbling in the aisles & laughing side-splits! Climb on the human pyramid of fun. Catch the spirit of SIS-BOOM-BAH!”

Gay Cure Ministry Closes

It’s a very good sign as we wait for the US Supreme Court to rule on gay marriage that Exodus International the oldest & largest Christian ministry dealing with faith & homosexuality announced that it's closing its doors after 37 years of ministry. The Board of Directors reached a decision after a year of dialogue & prayer about the organization's place in a changing culture. Alan Chambers, President of Exodus stated, "Exodus is an institution in the conservative Christian world, but we've ceased to be a living, breathing organism. For quite some time we've been imprisoned in a worldview that's neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical. From a Judeo-Christian perspective, gay, straight or otherwise, we're all prodigal sons & daughters. Exodus International is the prodigal's older brother, trying to impose its will on God's promises & make judgments on who's worthy of His Kingdom. God is calling us to be the Father - to welcome everyone, to love unhindered. This is a new season of ministry, to a new generation. Our goals are to reduce fear & come alongside churches to become safe, welcoming & mutually transforming communities." Another institution has chosen to be on the right side of history. This is yet another excellent development to show our opponents how narrow minded & ignorant their thinking is that LGBT people can actually become heterosexual. Other gay-cure ministries will continue but not under the name or umbrella of Exodus. Updates to Come…:)

Bronx Gay Center Protest Walk

With the celebration of Gay Pride in NYC to commemorate the Stonewall riots next weekend & the entire LGBT community waiting to hear the US Supreme gay marriage decision The Bronx LGBTQ Center will take to the streets this evening to reach out to the community & fight back against homophobia, transphobia & discrimination. They will be accompanied by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. & NYC councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito. New York State Senator Jose M. Serrano is expected to join the walk, as well. The walk will begin at SCAN's Mullaly Recreation Center after a brief safety talk & proceed toward the Grand Concourse & Tremont at 6P at the Mullaly Recreation Center, 40 East 164th Street in the Bronx. Again we have to take to the streets into order to provide a safe environment for our LGBT citizens. Hopefully the country will take notice. The U.S. Supreme Court will rule within the next week on the fate of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Our LGBT community has worked so hard against DOMA's discrimination for nearly a decade & will not stop until full equality is achieved for their families. Let’s hope that the US Supreme Court will rule fairly & respectfully in this matter. Updates To Come…:)

CONTINENTAL Sells Out At PIFF

Last night I dropped in on the Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film 2nd Annual House Party before catching Malcolm Ingram's riveting new documentary CONTINENTAL at Provincetown International Film Festival. The conversations were about the films we caught throughout the day but after you had one of Michael Colford’s smart cocktails named after the fabulous Kitty Carlisle the conversations become more intimate. When I arrived at the Art House people were lining up to see the film. As I sat waiting to enter the theatre I ran into my good friend Michael Musto who’s in town to cover the festival. Michael is currently doing a weekly column called Musto! The Musical! for Out.com, writing regular think pieces for the Advocate & weekly interviews for Gawker. He also appears in the film. When I took my seat I ran into David Isaacson who I had met at the Chlotrudis Society party & we continued our conversation about independent film as the theatre filled to capacity. Andrew Peterson, Director of Programming for the PIFF introduced filmmaker Malcolm Ingram who gave some opening remarks. This is a must-see film for the LGBT community & our allies. CONTINENTAL takes viewers back in time to the sexually charged New York of 1968 when Steve Ostrow opened the Continental Baths. Not only was it a place “for sophisticated men only” the code name used for gay,  it evolved into a scene for the hip, beautiful & infamous. When they added entertainment this is where Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Patti LaBelle & Peter Allen just to name a few took center stage. CONTINENTAL tells the tale of one of the most important keystones in the sexual revolution, that fostered an environment of tolerance & contributed to a level of mainstream gay acceptance & uncensored sexuality the likes of which have never been seen since. LOVELACE Opens Ptown Film Fest

The Provincetown International Film Festival kicked off its 15th year with LOVELACE a biopic about the infamous star of the 1970’s porn classic DEEP THROAT. The dark drama was brilliantly directed by Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman (HOWL) with Amanda Seyfried (BIG LOVE, MAMA MIA) in the title role. The cast is stellar with an amazing performance by Sharon Stone playing her unsympathetic religious mother. Lovelace’s abusive husband Chuck Traynor is portrayed by Peter Sarsgaard with supporting roles by Chris Noth, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, ChloĂ« Sevigny, Eric Roberts, Debi Mazar & James Franco just to name a few. The movie is about a fragile young woman who becomes one of the first porn superstars. Though she appears to be happy on the outside in reality she’s living a nightmare inflicted by her sleazy brutal husband. Eventually she breaks free, discloses the truth & helps prevent other women from becoming similarly victimized. For a feminist any movie dealing with the underbelly of the porn industry is never easy to watch but somehow with LOVELACE you just can’t turn away. Linda Lovelace was exploited & controlled by her mentally & physically abusive husband/manager for years yet she survived to tell her story in a best selling memoir Ordeal in 1980. The film is not for meek but it really makes you stop & think. LOVELACE had its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival & is scheduled for release later this summer.

Gay Military & Allies Equality Video

Freedom to Marry & Outserve-SLDN released the latest video in their “Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry” campaign series. It features three prominent straight allies – Retired Rear Admiral Jamie Barnett, Army Major Mary Bergner & former Congressman & Army Captain Patrick Murphy speaking out in support of married gay & lesbian service members. The so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) prevents legally married gay & lesbian couples from receiving over 1,100 federal protections that heterosexual couples receive. Evan Wolfson, founder & president of Freedom to Marry stated, “America’s gay & lesbian service members are just as brave, courageous & heroic as non-gay soldiers, yet they are still barred from sharing in the critical safety-net of protections that come with being legally married. No service member should have to worry about their family while they are risking their lives overseas. It’s time for the federal government to give gay & lesbian soldiers, their military spouses & their families the same respect & support that non-gay soldiers receive & strike down the so-called Defense of Marriage Act.” Army Veteran & OutServe-SLDN Executive Director Allyson Robinson added, “As we await the Supreme Court’s decision, we are reminded that this is not just a gay or lesbian issue. This goes to the heart of readiness, retention & cohesion & America’s service members & veterans - no matter what their sexual orientation - know that this is a discriminatory & harmful law that must be relegated to the dustbins of history.”

Oy Vey! My Son is Gay! The Movie

Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay! was produced by Russian filmmaker Eugeny Afineevsky & he feels there’s no time better than now to spread the message that love is love out into the world. With recent news of the horrendous anti gay bill passing through the lower house of Parliament in Russia banning even the spread of LGBT information he needs our help to distribute this completed hilarious indie comedy film through an IndieGoGo campaign. Afineevsky stated, “At a time when nations throughout the world are experiencing challenging & troubling times, I feel that people need to laugh; to feel inspired; & to realize that only through acceptance & tolerance can we move forward to creating a better world in which to live. Born in Russia, raised in Israel & currently living in the USA, I feel that I have been able to combine multicultural elements & offer a fresh, unique perspective on an otherwise sensitive subject matter. To use the language of comedy to address a difficult & sensitive subject with empathy; creating light & funny characters who are nearly caricatures of themselves; having the humor emanate from the characters, even when a given situation may not demand humor. Most of the movies on Indiegogo are just beginning their development. Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay!! is a completed movie ready to be launched in movie theaters to reach a wider audience.” This fabulous film chronicles the heartwarming story of a Jewish mother played by the amazing Lainie Kazan discovering not only is her son gay but dating a Roman Catholic boy. The film also stars Emmy winner Jai Rodriguez, Vincent Pastore, Carmen Electra, Saul Rubinek, Emmy winning comedian & writer Bruce Vilanch & Grammy winning composer Desmond Child created a special song for the movie. Their deadline is July 2nd & they need our help.

Still No SCOTUS Gay Marriage Ruling

We spent the morning on the US Supreme Court Blog waiting to see if perhaps today they would decide on United States v. Windsor which challenges the constitutionality of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) & Hollingsworth v. Perry the challenge to California’s Proposition 8. Though the clerks advised us that it was unlikely to happen today we waited. At 10:26 EST SCOTUS's Amy Howe stated, “To be clear & to answer a lot of questions: No same-sex marriage, affirmative action, or voting rights cases today. We don't know when we will get them, but next chance is Thursday at 10A.” This process seems slower than watching paint dry but yet exciting being actually on SCOTUS Blog with over 20,000 other Americans waiting & hoping for a decision. The consensus is that though we will be going through this process yet again this coming Thursday, the decision in these cases will most likely not be decided until the end of Supreme Court session next week. With LGBT pride events happening this month across America you would think that these cases would have been decided by now. The question being: Is this a good or bad sign that the US Supreme Court appears to be dragging out their decisions? Updates to Come…:)
