Lady Gaga is on the cover for The Advocate in August.She’s one of the most outspoken gay allies for LGBT
equality today. Her devotion to supporting gay marriage,
fighting the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy & increasing
AIDS awareness has been over the top. The Advocate’s
Jeremy Kinser spoke with Lady Gaga about her activism,
her critics & her music. Lady Gaga has also faced backlash
for drawing too heavily from another gay favorite & equality
advocate, Madonna. Gaga recognizes those comparisons as
well as those to other women she admires, including Barbra
Streisand. “There’s no drama, there’s no jealousy, there’s no
competition,” she says. “They’re just happy to see other
women winning. I just feel so connected to Madonna in a lot
of ways & I feel connected to Barbra & I feel connected to
Cher & Blondie & all of the women who came before me.”

To say that I would use the gay community to sell records is probably one of the most ridiculous statements anyone can make about me. I would say the top thing I think about every single day of my life, other than my fans, loving the music, and my family being healthy, is social justice and equality.
Rumors, shots at me as a human being, that’s what comes with the territory of being a musician and being someone who is a public figure. I care only about what I can change. What can I push forward? How can I be a part of the fight for modern social issues? You’re either going to try and change or you’re not. Taking an ambiguous stance is not what I’m about, obviously. I like to go right for the ass-kicker. You’re either in or you’re out. I’m from New York. I know bullshit. I can smell it from a mile away.
More than ever, the Music Biz, which is all about marketing--and in that glare, Lady Gaga's stance seems convenient and disingenuous.
Nevertheless, if she does some good, that's nice, too. However, where was she before market mattered, and where will she be when it no longer does? Maybe I'm cynical, but right now, I wonder if she doesn't think that "LGBT" means "Lady Gaga Big Time."
That's very funny about LGBT = Lady Gaga Big Time but I think she's refreshingly sincere. I saw her open for Kelly Clarkson a few years back & she really hasn't changed her message since then. Instead she continues to use her celebrity well for our LGBT community...:)
